So what kinds of PC's and party make up's are DM's seeing?

My play test party includes:
- A Cyran warforged fighter/paladin
- a human male artificer from Cyre
- a changeling female cleric (SH)/wizard from Sharn
- a female elf rogue with an Aberrent(sp?) Dragonmark

I'm currently looking at starting characters with 1d4 levels, each player rolling randomly.

Wow.... one unlucky roll and I would be 3 levels below someone else in my party???? That would suck. You have some understanding players......

I have to agree with Captain One here. If you want to impose a random penalty after character death to discourage players from taking reckless acts, thats one thing (which in fact my current DM uses and I may use as well in my Eberron game), however I have to strongly suggest against the random levels to START.

Avoiding randomness and preventing players from getting screwed from the get-go is the reason I switched from 4d6 to point buy.

Beyond the above concerns that I agree with. I had my first group have their characters from Breland. They all decided to be from Sharn.

warforged fighter
shifter ranger
halfling rouge

I also created some npcs because they needed a 4th character to survive but somehow they managed to get two of themselves killed and the npc. The warforged fighter and the halfing rouge kicked the bucket as well as the npc they picked out. This was during the back of the ECS adventure. Instead of closing in on Saber they ran from him and he was able to take them down one by one. Except the shifter rouge who was able to run fast enough to make it out of there. It was a weird session.

Anyway, I hear that these characters will be replaced with another halfling rouge from New Cyre (twin brother of the other) and a druid which I do not know which race yet or where he will be from.

One thing I've noticed, here and on the online role-playing forum, is that almost all characters seem to originate from either Sharn or Cyre. Not that I'm any exception - my current character was born in Cyre and grew up in Sharn  - but there does seem to be a bit of a trend forming. I guess the 'big metropolis' and 'destroyed homeland' settings are providing the most attractive character seeds.

And I've gotta agree with the previous comments - at low levels, a 4-level spread is very wide, and it's not going to be fun for your players.

Our party consists of a warforged cleric of Dol Dorn, a changeling rogue/monk, and a human artificer. The changeling is from Starilaskur (in Breland), and the artificer lives in a village northwest of Starilaskur, on the shores of Lake Brey (but spent 6 of his last 7 years in Arcanix, and was born in Cyre, in all likelihood, though his past is murky). The warforged cleric has been inert for almost a year, having fallen out of an airship (which would normally kill a 1st level character, but I allowed the player to take artistic license in this case), and doesn't know where he was created (chances are in the bowels of Sharn, in Merrix d'Cannith's secret laboratories).

Our party (starting next thurday?) will be (starting at 5th):

1 Warforged Fighter/Wizard-3/2 from Cyre
2 Warforged Monk-5 from Karrnath
3 Gnome Artificer 5 - from Zilargo
4 Shifter Druid 5 - from Xen'Drik
5 Young Centaur 5 - from Eldeen Reaches (has 1 more racial HD to go)

Should be fun!
Lady Morn

07-15-04, 07:57 PM
The composition of our party is:

Female Tiefling Rogue (from Sharn)
Female Human Fighter (from Karranth)
Male Shifter Fighter (from Eldeen Reaches)
Elven Sorceress (from Aerenal)
Shandronas

07-15-04, 08:29 PM
My group is rather front-loaded. I'm going to feel sorry for them later.

Human Fighter
Gnome Paladin
Kalashtar Psion
Elf (Valenar) Ranger

Not much in the way of healing and zero in the way of trap-finding (something I use quite a bit of). Being a strong believe in status quo encounters, they are in for some rough times.

Our characters are all members of a minor noble house in Aundair (without a dragon-mark of course) that served the Queen but has had a mysterious falling out with her Majesty. Each of the characters serve a role in the household and were all orphans taken in by Lord Charlaine.

Got to say, it has so far been one of the best games I have been involved in...

The party consists of:
Errondar (1st level Human Rogue): A little brash and considers himself somewhat of a ladies man though still manages to be honest and forthright.

Halina Niadrin (2nd level Kalashtar Psion): A beautiful and very vain psion who has strange interest in the nobility of Eberron for some reason.

Caliban Morganith (2nd level Wizard): An arrogant wizard, the kind of guy you want to just beat the snot out of and leave lying on the pavement bleeding, but he is devoutly loyal to Charlaine.

Yeah I admit it -I am playing the Wizard ;)

My party that i Dming:

Gnome Artificer---- the trap guys
Warforged Paladin--- healer, front
Elven Rogue (archer type) --- archer, social guy, stealth guy

(in another game)
Warforged bard called Morgan (mechanical organ)
Hafling artificer house Jorasco Least Mark
Shifter barbarian
Changeling rogue -- Master of disguise! So strong in social setting!
Human wizard ---playboy who want to have adventure with every female
footdownatgreen

07-16-04, 01:16 AM
The core of our party:
Rouge Swashbuckeler, human - wants a airship for pirate raids.
Archer (race and class?) - searching for a cure for a mysterious disease.
Artificer (me) Human - Dreams of grandeur, of the house Cannith and by level 15 plans on being in control, with some pirate backing it will be done.

There are two others but they arent always present and proball y wont stick around past school starting.
N'wah

07-16-04, 03:48 AM
The group I'm (hopefully) starting so far is:

- Talenta halfling paladin, complete with clawfoot mount.
- Aerenal elf wizard with an abberant dragonmark that her Vol cultist parents think is a re-emerged Mark of Death... in game story development should be fun.
- Brelish warforged monk, though the nation of origin is still under debate.
- Shifter barbarian/ranger, going into weretouched master; probably from the Eldeen Reaches.

Since the current game we're running is the ongoing Cauldron Adventure Path, the group is going to try a bit of wilderness exploration and Xen'drik relic-hunting, plus a little Blood of Vol run-ins. Just to spice it up, I'm thinking on giving them a Karrnathi Emerald Claw ally and maybe a few encounters with a Silver Flame zealot who thinks that the taint of lycanthropy still needs eradicating.

As it stands, I'm doing very little in Sharn- even though I love its history and design, I still get a disturbing desire to port over my 2nd-edition Undermountain maps every time I think of the lower Cogs and the cliff-city port. I hope to avoid that for now- it would drive me insane.
Myriddian

07-16-04, 05:23 AM
Female Changling Rogue from Sharn aiming for Arcane trickster
Female Elven Fighter from Valenar, fighter all the way with double scimtar
Male warforged fighter from Cyre wants to be similar to Lord of Blades build
Half-elf Ranger male eldeen Reaches an archer who wants to be an arcane archer

I'm supplying a female human cleric of the Silver Flame from Thrane very rabid and annoying and a male warforged wizard aiming to be the first warforged Archmage!

What the problem with starting 3 level lower than the other players of the party ?

The members of a party are not in competition.
They are in partnership.

The appropriate reaction should be to regret that my partners are not as powerful as me.
But never mind I will help them.

I have a powerful 4th level partner in my party.

Campaign beginning today! All characters 1st level. All just come to Sharn to see the sights and begin an adventuring career.

1. Human male Wizard (neutral good)

2. Valenar elf male Ranger (chaotic good)

3. Changeling female Rogue (masquerades as half elf; unknown to the party) (chaotic neutral---w/good intentions)

4. Halfling Cleric (SH_ Olladra) (neutral good)

We will begin with "The Forgotten Forge" and move from there to "Queen with Burning Eyes" and a generic adventure "The Wolf Tribe" (hobgoblins /raider bandits led by bugbear with a medallion called the Wolf Disc which is sought to help complete a collection of discs at Morgrave U) and then into "The Shadows of the Last War" and then to "Forge of Fury"....and possibly a retooled version of The Isle of Dread (an island near the coast of Xendrik; and the home of the vault of the key found in Queen. And then hopefully the Eberron Vampire Blade. Where to then? who knows!

I so wanted to incorporate Sunless Citadel but the characters will be to high a level after completing the other adventures that it wont work anymore.

I think the reaction to the idea stems from the fact that a first level character will have almost NOTHING to contribute to a group of level 3's and 4's. Anything that could challenge a level 4 character is far too dangerous for a level 1 PC to even be in the same room with, much less fight. If that Level 1 person is supposed to be the party muscle, then he's not going to be able to fulfill his obligations to the others. Conversely, if he's the diplomat or investigator type, he's not going to have the skill ranks and feats necessary to fill out the kinds of challenges a level 4 will face.

One level of variance is fine, and two is okay but stretching it, but 3 is a very far stretch between being a party member - and being an observer.

I'm tired of having groups fall apart on me, so I set down some character creation guidelines for my new group.

-32 point buy
-good or neutral with strong good tendencies only
-must have some tie to House Tharashk
-must have a strong desire to support and aid the crown of Breland.

I started them in Sharn, at 5th level, using a modified "Forgotten Forge" that I'm intertwining with my own adventure. The characters I wound up with were:

-Drusai, aasimar monk who was a soldier during the war and turned to pacifism and self-denial afterwards to atone for all the violence he did then (paladin 2/monk 3, with the Vow of Poverty feat. He also thinks he is a human). His parents are peripheral members of House Tharashk, and his monky vows include an oath to the throne.

-Maya, human fighter/rogue, going for master thrower/invisible blade. Maya was a young street thief in Sharn, destined for a life of crime, when a long-lost aunt managed to track her down and bring her off the streets. Her aunt, a member of House Tharashk, set Maya on the path of good and altruism, and showed how her talents could be used for the good of the kingdom.

-Hap Kismet, shifter cleric of Olladra, going for Auspician (Forgotten Realms PrC we've modified for Eberron). When that lightning bolt missed him by inches, striking the tree next to him instead - and then the falling tree also missed him by inches - Hap knew that Olladra was looking out for him. He spreads luck and good fortune wherever he can, happy to do his part for king and country. The last bit of work he did was as a guard for a Tharashk caravan going from Sharn to New Cyre. The Tharashkians liked his style, and said they'd be sure to call him again.

-The Chain, changeling bard/fighter going to warshaper (houseruled version). Where there is crime, there is the Chain, to mete out justice from the towering heights of Sharn to its lowest depths. He strikes from the shadows with his spiked chain, never wearing the same face twice, desiring only to see the guilty punished (and, if possible, the innocent rescued).

So far, so good.

Human Fighter (1) from rural area of Breland

Human Paladin (1) from Thane

I'd like to point out that parties even starting at level 5 are already more powerful than the vast majority of NPCs, and if they have any history at all, they are probably fairly well known in the local community.

Now this may be good or bad, but it should be noted.
Medesha

07-16-04, 03:39 PM
Depends on how long they've been in the local community, and how subtle they've been about their deeds thus far.

Of course, integrating the characters' backgrounds into the campaign world is one of the DM's many tasks.

My players so far - to my players if you read this and determine that you are a player in my game, don't read this. Got me?!

Marty, Halfling Urban Ranger - Cyre expatriate now traveling. Hired by a contact to watch over Tork. Payment = Entrance into exclusive assassins guild.

Tork (assumed name), Dwarven Fighter with bardic tendencies from the Mror Holds. Son of a high-ranking aurum member in Mror Holds. Sent to an Academy in Breland, now hiding out and avoiding an escort home. Believes his father has no idea where he is. See above.

Elia, Human Artificer from Sharn, grouped with the others when they went off to save some abduction victims one of whom was her half sister. Decided to stick with them.

Thomas, human wizard/butler from Breland. He has high hopes of putting this horrible wizardly time behind him for the lofty status of head cook for the 5 star inn known as the Jade Forest Plaza.

Namrylin, gnome priest of one of the many mystery cults that have sprung up since the destruction of Cyre. A follower of the Archmagi, his only goal is to keep to the word and gather all magical items to the cult. It is obvious to them by looking at the Mournlands that common mortals cannot be trusted with magic. So with his trusty, if a bit tall, manservant and cataloguing guru, Thomas, he has set out to save the fools.

All started at level one and their adventures so far have been a success (player fun wise more than character goal wise, but eh... what can you do).

Warforged Artificer/Fighter - Was thought destroid and left for scrap
Warforged Fighter - Made from many older warforged pieced together
Human Druid - mad about losing her homeland of Cyre
Human Wizard - wants to know what happened to Cyre
Human Rogue/Cleric - lucky was out of Cyre with his house lords and ladies when the events happened in Cyre
Shifter Barabarian - a traveler alway looking for a fight
Kalishtar Psion - a programmed agent of the Kalishtar, though he doesn't know it
Gnome Bard - looking for adventure and new songs to sing

A good party with lots of role playing potential that i intend to make the most of. Some great back stories that will have a lot of fun developing.

All from 1st level ;

Warforged Fighter (5th) Cyre displaced - hoping to become a juggrnaut till he annoyed the lord of blades by witholding a certain schema, has sine decided to become a master of the greatsword

Human Artificer (5th) Breland - an ex member of house cannith (due to said schema) has now thrown his lot in with house orien for workspace and protection from cannith

Human Sorceror (5th) Karnnath - a house orien noble with the least mark and favoured in house, is turning out to be completely ruthless, and has made secret deals with merrix for the schema

? Cleric (?th) ? - a cleric *cough* that attached himself to the group is a secret member of a secret organization (bet you cant guess which one)

They have played 8 adventures now, starting with a challenge of the champions adventure in Sharn followed by the ECB adventure and then a few of my own.

The group that I am GMing has come up with the following so far:

Warforged Soulknife (Cyre forge)
Human Psion (Shaper) Cannith Dragonmark
Human Fighter (Archer) (not sure where this one is from)
Warforged Fighter (Cyre forged)
Kalashtar Rogue
Kalashtar Cleric
Changeling Rogue (from Sharn)

They are starting at 1st level in a ranching community of my own devising in area between Breland, Eldeen Reaches, and Droaam.

I will have at least two more characters join the party.

I have no idea why it ended up this way, but I am going to eventually have at least four psionic characters in a party of 9 characters.

We have played one night and it was fun. Looking forward to continuing.

I'm gonna guess the Chamber. The Blood of Vol would be too easy, same with Cults of the Dragon Below.

My group currently has:
1 gnome artificer
1 warforged fighter
1 human sorceror
1 lesser asimar paladin

we have one other player that hasn't roled up a charcter yet,
so no telling what that would be.

My players are doing

Mystic - Warforged Artificer
Relic - Warforged Fighter, going for the Juggernaut PrC
Idril - Human Wizard, going for Heir of Siberys for House Orien
Kennrun - Halfling Rogue/Fighter, going for Extreme Explorer(think a halfing Indiana Jones and that's him right down to the hat and whip)

A fifth is joining us in a couple of sessions, who has a really interested character idea in playing a fallen Paladin of the Silver Flame. He becomes disillusioned with Thrane, loses abilites, eventually returns to the church in a nice PrC.

I started them off on the lightning rail to Passage in Aundair. They've spent the first session working for House Orien.

Our party,

Beryn Sorn: LG Human male Ranger 1 / Conjurer 2 from Aundair.

Vaughn: NG Warforged (male personality) Fighter 1 / Rogue 2 from Aundair (manufactured in Cyre).

Volshen Archante: CE Human male Cleric (Blood of Vol) 1 / Necromancer 2 from Karrnath. Volshen is publicly a member of the Blood of Vol but secretly a member of the Emerald Claw.

Miranda Archante: NG Phrenic Human female Kineticist 1 from Karrnath (Volshen's kid sister). Trained in Adar. As for the phrenic template, we're going off the premise that she's some sort of evolutionary freak. That or she's possessed by some rogue (anti-Dreaming Dark) Quori.

Volshen and Miranda are Beryn's cousins. Beryn met Vaughn while fighting for Aundair (Fairhaven, specifically) during the last years of the Last War.

I'm not sure where we're starting - I just know that the DM doesn't like Sharn for some reason so we're going to start out in the wilderness mining Dragonshards for one of the Houses (Beryn has ranks in Profession (mining)) - this was the DM's idea.

I think this will be an interesting game because we're setting things up for our primarily good-aligned party to be at odds with the Church of the Silver Flame while being in good standing with the Blood of Vol. I love that, in Eberron, an organization that would traditionally be heroic can be easily cast as villains while those of a monstrous faith (Vol/Emerald Claw) can be seen as righteous to some degree. To our party, the Silver Flame is full or arrogant, corrupt, power-hungry fools while the Blood's quest to defeat death is quite noble (the other PC's are unaware of our cleric's involvement with the Emerald Claw).

Well it certainly helps that your cryptic quote ruled out the more obvious ones. I didn't see any profit motive for the Aurum. Phiralan and Thurani spies could be possible (bards with wands of CLW?) but they aren't really "secret"...

Process of elimination. :)

Also, I was planning on including the Chamber in my game as well, so I had dragons on the brain. :)

The party I'm getting ready to run is going to be the command crew of a privateer airship. Too many Star Trek references have been flying for me to be truly comfortable, but my players are cool. Included in the group are:

Warforged Fighter/Rogue, the ship's captain; a slow, methodical type with a good head for personal interaction, if not high-level thinking
Human Artificer, ship's engineer and helmsman; a scion of House Cannith trying to make his own way in the world
Human Artificer, weapon engineer; a cheerful peddler of mass destruction
Halfling Druid, ship's doctor; a Jorasco-trained healer with an interest in strange animals
Changeling Psion, ship's navigator and communicator; a follower of a philosophy of transformation
Shifter Ranger, swab girl; the ship's loyal mascot and deck scrubber

I think it's going to be fun. :)

One of my groups.

Warforged Monk: Home region unknown.
Warforged Barbarian/Ftr: One of the first warforged created, but fell off the boat enroute to battle and had to make its way to dry land, where our artificer convinced him to join the party.
Human Wizard: Focuses on necromantic spells, but is not a specialist. From Karnath
Shifter Druid: Home region unknown.
Changeling Rogue: Not forthcoming on home region.
Gnome Artificer: Really low Str 5 or 6 (I think) and uses a leather harness to ride on the back of the Warforged Barb/Ftr. From Breland with some minor house affliations.
Human Ftr/Artificer: Focuses on archery and ranged support. Fled Karnath and was raised in Talenta Plains.

Warforged Paladin- series 600, number designation 666. He carries a bastard sword and acts like a bastard. I thought he was a paladin of virtue, but it seems he might be one of slaughter. House Cannith loves him because he shows loyalty despite the fact they will never pay him for services. He settles for a brief repair now and again. 3rd level

Human Fighter -weapon Scythe. She's a real cut up, and she likes to harass male Npcs, and sometimes females? Played by ana ctual girl with actual attention span problems she projects into the game. she has gotten in trouble with Sergent Dolom already. 3rd level

Dox - A male changleing Rouge who slaughter a complete emrald claw troupe in thier sleep, and a cleric and necromancer disguised as a soldier of the emerald claw made it past thier skeletal camp and killed them in thier sleep using his actiosn points. He is now level 4 for his brilliance. He carries daggers.

I am playing in an IRC Eberron game (which I prefer to in person games).

The party consists of:

Level 5 Changeling Favored Soul (The divine equivalent of a Sorcerer, from Complete Divine).

Level 5 Human Paladin

Level 5 Halfling Rogue

Level 5 Warforged Fighter

Yeah, we're a bit lacking on the magical side, but it's been an absolute blast thus far, and we've a got a very good DM (Geethree, a poster on these very boards).

the group I'm running consists of:

a warforged barb -- he uses a spiked chain, is from Sharn, and is dumb as a brick (6 int). Always good to have the comic relief in the party. and when the campaign began, he was only about a month old

an elan psion (egoist) -- he's acting as the warforged cartaker.

a dragonmarked human cleric of the Sovereign Host -- he's pretty much what he sounds like.

a human sorcerer -- member of house cannith, but no dragonmark. He's aiming for the Heir of Syberis prc

and finally a changling bard -- noone in the party is quite sure whether he is male or female. ;) he never shows his real form. but they do know that he is a changling.

and it is just me, or is there a warforged in every single one of the groups on this thread? :)

Hope your campaign works out. If your players are 100 % happy about their levels being randomly rolled and you have no prob creating a balancing adventure, then roll on!

The group I play in starts tomorrow and I am looking forward to it.

Here's the rundown ( hell i can't spell and don't have the Ebberon book handi )

First level Party

A Male Half Orc fighter that hails from the Shadow Marches. Not much else is known about this mysterious brute.

A Female Elven rogue that is a member of house Thuranni, and from the Lahzzarr (?) principalities. She is a sailor and fights with a swash buckling flair. Her true father has ties with the rival Elven house that they split from. Her father ignores her, which has provoked much antimosity towards him.

A Female Shifter cleric with no ties to any church or religion in general. She is an abstract spiritualist beliving in cosmic forces greater than both the Gods and Nature itself. She is uncertain the exact nature of it and refuses to name it. In the past, she has used her magic to help protect communities from the ravages of war. The Domains she draws from are the Community and the War Domains. I beleive she is from the Eldeen reaches, though I am unsure.

My Character, Cornealius Sharn Borastar

A Male Human Wizard that was born and raised in Karrnath. He was born in a noble family with a strong military tradition.

His father is a well known General and continues to have great influence and power among Karrnathi families and houses. He realized that the intelligence Cornealius had gave him promise to be a great tactician and leader. Over time his son, Cornealius started showing the signs of a spell caster. His father refused to send his son to a Wizards School to waste his time reading musty old books. Instead he was to stay recieve proper training in the arts of war.

Cornealius was the last son born to the Borastar family. His mother died during child birth. All of his older siblings are great warriors though they do not show as much promise in the area of leader ship and tactical capibility. All this made Cornealius the target of his fathers own personal ambition to make him the next proper inheritor and leader of the Borastar family.

Cornealius was forced to suppress his magic potential as a child, though in secret he practiced it dilligently on his own. Then his father was again summoned to duty to lead an army to defend the boarders.

Cornealius was sent to live with his uncle, who was removed from the family by his grand father. He chose to support the war by being a blacksmith magewright, instead of a warrior, like his father. Cornealius under his Uncle's care taught him the ways of magic. Cornealius was also supposed to go to local combat training but instead, he skipped classes to practice the magic he learned from his Uncle.

When the war was nearing an end, Cornealius's father found out by word of mouth, that his brother was not making him train as a warrior. Instead he wasted his sons talents teaching him magic. Cornealius chose the path of the Mage even after his father commanded him to attend the Karrnath military school. Cornealius then ran away.

As a result, Cornealius was removed from the Borastar family. And his Uncle and his Father are on bad terms with each other.

Being totally cut off from his family Cornealius has been traveling, doing odd jobs, and searching for a new master to further his magical talents. He will prove to his father that he will rise to power.

Since he has been removed by the family he goes by his middle name, Sharn.
