04-13-05, 12:37 PM I know this thread will die in a welter of I-hate/love-the-comic-booky-stylings-of-the-ECS posts but I think this is really cool. An Eberron comic has a lot of potential for good imagery and intense action.

Just as long as the art is good. Too many otherwise decent graphic novels have been ruined by terrible art.

Timeline and Metaplot

That's WotC's decision. There are major events that could be set in motion, if they want to take that path. However, I do feel that there are a lot of stories to be explored on the micro level before it is necessary to go to a macro level...

...if WotC wants, they could certainly push forward a hard timeline with world-changing events. But I'm in no rush to see that happen. I'd rather let players explore the world and get to know it well before forcing major changes on everyone.

I personally would like to see a graphic novel/comic series, if they can keep the writers away from world-changing events. :twocents:

04-13-05, 01:24 PM Sure, I'd love to. We've got the first issue's "main" cover by Tim Seeley. This is, naturally, Drizzt. It's not any particular scene; it's our "movie poster" cover, as a first issue cover really needs to sell the series as a whole rather than a particular issue or story. We've also got the first issue variant, by Gez Fry, which is along the same lines. We've got the second issue's cover, by Tim Seeley. This depicts Drizzt's battle with Zaknafein before he's sent off to the Academy, and we've got a poster shot featuring much of the "Dark Elf" cast, which was actually Tim's very first pass at these characters.

I just wanted to say that I am not Gez Fry (http://www.gezfry.com). Just in case people would get confused and think I'm a quasi celebrity or something. :) I discovered that artist's existence fairly recently, and I like his work. He even lived in France for a while, so confusion could be possible. (I wish I was able to draw like him, though.)

The art will be manga-influenced, which not everyone will like, but I'm sure it will be gorgeous. That said, I hope they capture the exotic feel of Eberron, picking up on the fact that not everything should look like straight-up European medieval fantasy.

With the art likely to be good, it's really all in the content. I'd love to see stories that are exciting but not continuity-shattering. Swashbuckling is a good start, and any darkness they bring to the subject matter will be appreciated.

I'll definitely be buying this; I just hope they don't gloss over all the things that makes Eberron interesting! If they treat it as just a "D&D" comic, it's destined for failure.

They're best known for the recent GI Joe series, and yeah, the "house style" is a blend of manga stylistic elements and a more traditional US superhero look. I really like it, though my optimism will be cautious until I see the actual Eberron comic.

In all seriousness, I actually think Rich has the writing chops to author a good comic book. Great sense of humor aside, the OOTS story is an interesting one and the characters are lovable.

04-14-05, 01:28 PM Darn right with OotS. I mean, if you summarize the plot, it's only the most hackneyed and embaressing things a DM could use. Evil lich kings? Vengeance for father? A twisted anti-party with a long-lost evil twin?

But then again, the characters rock so much that I don't care about the plot, I enjoy watching them interact.

He would keep Eberron from blowing up.

Or having Darguun and Droam invade every nation.

They need some Mike Mignola-esque (Hellboy) artwork. Most the chapter (plate) artwork in the ECS book seems to be inspired by his style Very noir.
Hell, just make it a detective comics in a fantasy milieu. Greg Rucka or Brian Azarello would be brilliant.

Yeeeagh - for me personally, I can't use "manga" and "gorgeous" interchangeably. The first slit-mouth and saucer-pair of eyes I see, I'm not going to be able to pick it up. :( I do hope the comic is a success, though.

Don't let my comment sway you too much. I'd say everything at Devil's Due is "manga-inspired," or at least "Japanese-influenced." But it's not really that far from a standard comic book look. Here's a sample from the upcoming FR book:

It actually reminds me a lot of the "World of Warcraft" art style. Whatever the case, it's good stuff. There's no telling which artist will get put on the Eberron comic, but it's likely that the art will be high-quality. Unlike previous publishers of D&D comics, Devil's Due is known for consistently solid art.
