I was wondering about the stock expressions people from Eberron would use; things that could be worked into conversations to make it sound more Eberron-ish. From Keith's excellent Dreaming Dark novel, I've picked up these few: -The coinage; talk about galifars and sovereigns instead of gold and silver. -"Taking the side of the Traveller" means playing Devil's Advocate. -I seem to remember someone saying simply, "Sovereigns!" (the Host, I assume, not the coins ) -Displaced Cyreans are "Mourners" -The halfling expression gorlan'tor (sp?) about how they "really" feel about the big folks. Any good ones that I've missed? "The Flame consume..." is more common than the above among Thranes and devotees of the Silver Flame who are conversant with Thrane culture. City goblins may speak of "looking to Dhakaan" as an encouragement when they face racial or social class prejudice. Among themselves, the Zil speak of their pettiest intrigues as "easier than blackmailing a human." When facing an unexpectedly evenly match, adventurers, city guards, and soldiers might say, "Everybody pays Deneith." "Check the metal of his rings" is equivalent to "Let the buyer beware."

Darth Syntax 06-20-05, 12:35 AM	I have used "By Six and Soverign" to meaning something like "by god" or the equivilent. Similar is "in the name of Six and Soverign" which is roughly "what the hell?"
Lord Of Xoriat 06-20-05, 08:50 AM	Here are some myself and players in my current campaign have used. Firstly all the warforged insults...'Rust Bucket' 'Walking Mousetrap' 'Tinman' . An exclamation 'By Galifars Crown'; someone not trustworthy has 'more faces than a changeling'; meaning the complete opposite and completely sarcastic '...as strong as the Treaty'; members of the soverign host are Flamers or Flame Boys (the second being more derogatory); 'go visit Xen'drik' said in aggresion meaning get f#$%...and my favorite, "Touched by Xoriat" for you must be mad.

Can't remember much myself beyond the talentan phrases used in city of towers. Talentan Halflings- Remember that all these change situationally and locationally, and by relationship. (Pretty straightforward) Stuff I've seen used in our games: "Xoriat-touched" - Calling someone mad, like 'you xoriat-touched fool!' "Khyber below!" - A basic curse. You could also apply some common additions from various fantasy books. A lot add mildly gross anatomy parts. IE "Khyber's Balls!" etc. Substitute Khyber for any of the deities you feel like using. "Dolurrah take me." - (Substitute your favorite good/bad plane. I'm fond of stuff like "Kythri/Mabar take me from this xoriat-touched woman!', saying you'd rather be taken to one of those hellish places than be where you are or with who you're with. "Shavish fool." - Insult for anyone too mindless to do anything but fight. Hm. I know there's a lot more, but can't remember them right now.

"Remember both ends [of the double scimitar]." = In trying to hit your enemy, don't accidentally hit yourself (or your allies). Also said when casting area-effect spells. Lhazaar expressions: "Dabtoes forward, dustmen aft." = People at the front of the ship get to dangle their feet in the water, people at the back get dirty. Loosely, "Get out of the way so the real sailors can work." "A full launch pulled up and one changeling got out." = A testament to the changelings' many faces and their relative commonness in the Principalities. Demon Waste expressions: "Half-blood [or No blood], full soul." = An orcish way of saying a half-orc or human is accepted or righteous. Highest possible praise for a non-orc. "You're a two day [or more] stranger to me." = An orcish way of asking where you've been and what you've done since the last time you met. In the Demon Wastes, fiendish mind control and impersonation are a common threat.

"Mind-worm": A slur directed at Kalashtar, and the Inspired (for those who know about them, anyway). "The Keeper's Toll": Often used in dangerous undertakings (usually combat) when predicting a high number of fatalities. "The Keeper's Toll will be high when this battle's done"; "You'll pay the Keeper's Toll in taking that city". "(insert name) has Olladra's own luck" (with apologies to Mr. Jordan): Referring to someone who displays an unusual amount of luck. "Dance with the Shadow" (again, apologies to Mr. Jordan): I haven't quite worked out what meaning it may have; maybe tempting fate, or dealing with something (or someone) very dangerous, very evil, or both. "Remember the face of your father" (apologies to Mr. King): A saying among the Valenar. It is used to remind young warriors to uphold the honor of their ancestor. Could also be "Remember the face of your forefather", or "the face of your ancestor". I'll post more as I think of them. Great work, guys!

"You have forgotten the face of your fathers!" could be a deadly insult to a Valenar.

Think of the song "Devil went down to Georgia" or the legend of Faust. I think to "Gamble," "Wager" or "Bet" with the Traveller has a better ring to it than "To Dance with the Traveller."

I think "you are exchanging gifts with the traveller" would be more appropriate.

I, too, am reading The Binding Stone (dang good book, btw), and Geth, the shifter hero, is referring to his lycanthrope ancestors. "You've got Tiger's own honor." (i.e. you're very noble and honorable) "No, I've got Boar's brains." (i.e. Boar's kinda stupid, prone to rushing into fights without thinking about it). Geth also swears by "Rat's Tail!" and prays for "Grandmother Wolf's" blessing a few times. And in one critical scene he exclaims, in dismayed disbelief, "Tiger, Wolf, & Rat!" (Kinda like in RL when I say, "Jesus, Joseph, & Mary!")

Well, sure, if you wanna be accurate, you could say that, I guess. :P Seriously, that's a good point, and it seems that you were able to articulate what I was trying to get across, only my sleep-deprived brain wasn't cooperating - not that it does when I get plenty of sleep, mind you. :D Anyhoo, I haven't forgotten about this thread (or this board, for that matter), and I'm still wrestling with my brain trying to come up with some more sayings. Once again, good work guys!

I work at a Borders Bookstore, and they just came in this past Tuesday, so they should be available at your local bookseller now, unless they've already sold out, and considering that it ain't Harry Potter 6, it probably hasn't yet. In the back of The Binding Stone there's a glossary of expressions, characters, etc. Geth the Shifter makes reference to several animal "totems" that represent his lycanthropic ancestors: Wolf, Boar, Tiger, and Rat being his favorites. Each is addressed with a familial title, i.e. "Grandmother Wolf," or "Cousin Boar." When he swears he drops the familial title and adds an appropriate body part, i.e. "Rat's Tail!" standing in for "drat" or something more "expletive". So, Geth being all warrior-boy, his expressions aren't overly creative. What if it had been a Shifter Bard doing the cussin'? "Cousin Bear chew me up and dreck me out." (An expression of disbelief similar to "'F' me.") "I'd rather kiss Cousin Boar's twisty little tail!" "May Grandmother Wolf gnaw on your bones in Dolurrh!"

Roxlimn 08-06-05, 12:06 PM	Like the 5N suggests, I think that colloquialisms and slang would strongly follow National and House interests rather than racial ones. For example, a Thrane or a Mror Dwarf might say something like "Mad as a Wizard in the sky," referring to how they think about the insanity of building floating Towers, but an Aundairian wouldn't ever use or refer to a Wizard in such a derogatory tone. Many common phrases we use might make sense in some places, but not others: "Like magic!" would probably be used more in Aundair than anywhere else whereas: "The sky's the limit!" would be something a Sharnite might say.

Planewalkers especially those living in Sigil had a unique set of slang. The whole thing was based of old gutter british and some are stiill in use today. I have been using some of the words for the shadier residents of Sharn. For the leather headed primes among you I have included a short glossary. Read on Berk! Berk=Fool, casual means of address (Hey you! Berk!) Barmy=Crazy Blood=tough guy Bub=Alcohol Bubber=Drunk Bone-Box= Mouth Shut your bone box!=Shut up! Brain Box=Head Cutter=An experienced person, salty dog. Leatherhead=an Idiot Knight of the Post/Knight of the Cross Trade=Thief Jink (Pl. Jinx)=Gold The Dead Book= Death euphemism (He was written in the Dead Book. They'll write me in the Dead Book for sure!) My attempts at Alphabetical order have come to naught Sorry! :blush:
Marshall Stone 09-09-05, 01:25 AM	In my campaigns Warforged don't refer to non-warforged as "fleshies", it's just such a weak and silly put down; hardly insulting really. So instead I have them use: Foul Forms - alluding to how "messy" flesh and blood creatures are on the inside and out; disease, aging, etc. "I shall spill the Foul-Form's innards upon the ground, so it can see them with it's soft eyes and cower as it gasps it's last breath!" Frail Born - Kind of the opposite of War-Forged. Too Frail for War, and Born not Forged. Bleeders - While warforged might have liguids inside them, they don't generally bleed when cut. Less derogatory, more of a threat. "Bleeder! You've no hope against me!" Breeder - It's as polite as a flesh-and-blood hating Warforged (or say a follower of the Lord of Blades) is going to get. Not and insult or a threat per se, but a clear indicator of the differences between the Warforged and all other races. "Come Breeder, the master has a use for you afterall." Warforged will mix-n-match: Frail Form, Foul Born, Born Bleeders, etc. Those are the most commong insults I have evil warforged use against the other races.

"I've seen more life in a Karrnathi barracks" - a dull place, a tedious party etc. alternatively "more life in a goblin's bedding" "I trust him about as far as I can throw a warforged" "well rust my ghulra" - warforged expression of surprise. "I could eat a carcass crab" - extremely hungry. (I reckon that however much you like crabmeat, one that eats nothing but corpses is going to taste pretty darn nasty) "He's about as much use as a dwarf on a horse" and "as tight as a Mror wallet" finally (with a tip of the hat to Thomas "Amarillo Slim" Preston: "It's as hot as a Skyway Widow's love" on a similar note to Pistilpeach - we've had "It's all Giantish to me me" And our warforged calls other races "lumpies" - possibly because of their erratically unique fleshy exteriors.
