| ieattrollsforbreakfast05-12-05, 06:10 PM | So I've decided to set myself a mission of creating a working model of the Eberron planetary system using the program Celestia. I still have to sort out some textures (such as not using Saturn's rings, moon colours and the map of Eberron from the ECS cover) and some of the orbits, but so far the results are pleasing. Take a look and let me know what you think :) A typical summers day in Khorvaire, featuring Eyre (bottom), Nymm (middle) and Vult (top): http://www.geocities.com/ieattrollsforbreakfast/eberronday.txt A summers evening, featuring Zarantyr (right), Therendor (lower left) and Vult (top left): http://www.geocities.com/ieattrollsforbreakfast/zarantyr.txt And finally, the planet Eberron, featuring Zarantyr: http://www.geocities.com/ieattrollsforbreakfast/eberronplanet.txt |
| MarkB05-12-05, 06:34 PM | And finally, the planet Eberron, featuring Zarantyr: http://www.geocities.com/ieattrollsforbreakfast/eberronplanet.txt I'm reminded of the phrase from The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, relating to those other great planet- builders, the Magratheans. "...The sea was exactly the wrong shade of pink." :P But seriously, that's excellent work. I can't wait to see what you do next with it. |
| Solarious05-12-05, 06:40 PM | Wow. Your project bears wonderous fruit! :) I too shall see how things develop... Now 'git back over to Lake Galifar and start the next round already! :P |
| Slayen05-12-05, 07:59 PM | ok, I can't seem to view them. I click the link and all i get is a jumbled text file. |
| Gurv05-12-05, 09:09 PM | ok, I can't seem to view them. I click the link and all i get is a jumbled text file. What browser are you using? Opens just fine in my IE. |
| Slayen05-12-05, 10:01 PM | What browser are you using? Opens just fine in my IE. Firefox. I'll give IE a shot though, didn't think of that. Edit: hm, it worked. Wonder why the images didn't work with Firefox. They look pretty good though. The planet does look a little odd in the space shot without clouds. |
| EvilDrPuma05-12-05, 11:07 PM | Sweet. I'd imagined the orbits of the moons lying inside the Ring of Siberys, but this works better if astronomical realism is your goal. |
| donpepe05-12-05, 11:13 PM | pretty good stuff, congrats! ive discussed eberron's geomorphology and im quite confused ... the are some places where there arent poles, and some whre there are... (as in xen'drik continent and khorvaire) but argonessen and sarlona dont reach the poles so i dont get it! http://www.maproom.psu.edu/graphics2/dcw/world-rmap.jpg look at antartctica in this map. we know that its a vaguely round shaped mass, but in the flat map it doesnt look like that take a look at noth pole http://www.aaronpeter.com/image/arctic_north_pole_map.gif HELP ME PLEASE!!! |
| Marshall Stone05-13-05, 01:22 AM | Wow, incredible work, great job, keep it up. If you take requests can you do one with the moon that has the spit down the middle, the one that corresponds to the Mark of Shadow. I can't quite remember what it's called right now though. |
| The White Sorcerer05-13-05, 01:55 AM | I always thought the Ring of Siberys was thinner. |
| zambuka05-13-05, 02:17 AM | Edit: hm, it worked. Wonder why the images didn't work with Firefox. IIRC firefox determines filetype based on extension. IE and other determine file type based on content. These are linked using the .txt extension hack to allow direct linking to geocities, if you download them and change the extension to .jpg they should load fine in firefox. To the topic at hand. These images are great. I particularly like the first image and look forward to seeing what 'Trolls does with this. |
| Isran_Imrador05-13-05, 09:29 AM | Great Trolls :) i tryed the Celestia prg to but i didnt get it to do that... Any tips on how it works? ;) |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast05-13-05, 11:49 AM | They look pretty good though. The planet does look a little odd in the space shot without clouds. There are clouds, but they don't show up very well against the colour of the map. They should show up fine when the texture is fixed. :) If you take requests can you do one with the moon that has the spit down the middle, the one that corresponds to the Mark of Shadow. I can't quite remember what it's called right now though. Its on the list :) Eventually I should have textures for each moon sorted, so the moons will be the correct colour with their signature features (the split down Lharvion, the anvil on Olarune etc.). Any tips on how it works? Read the guides, and Ctrl-C and -V are your friends ;) |

I don't quite get your question or concern. Are you wondering about the deformation of shapes and such depending on which map projection you use? I believe it was indicated somewhere on these boards that while the world map of Eberron tries to include the whole world, it does cut off the extreme north or south. I think the Celestia images look great. I dont know if I would have the Lhazaar Principalities so far north. I'm anxious to see it with blue oceans. |
| donpepe05-14-05, 02:45 PM | i would like to see the extreme north and the extreme south in the modelling project. pole photos from above. that's all i'm having a xen'drik game in southern xen'drik so i need to get a picture of the land, because all the 'cuttin the poles' thing is confusing. pLEASE bring us the light, mr. modeller! |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast05-14-05, 02:51 PM | i would like to see the extreme north and the extreme south in the modelling project. pole photos from above. that's all i'm having a xen'drik game in southern xen'drik so i need to get a picture of the land, because all the 'cuttin the poles' thing is confusing. pLEASE bring us the light, mr. modeller! The current texture doesn't work well for the poles so there isn't much use in showing you that. The Lhazaar Principalities, the Frostfell and southern Xen'drik are far too distorted. I'm working on the new texture now, so I'll post images as soon as its finished :) On a side note, textures for Olarune (compete with shield motif), Sypheros (complete with split), Rhaan, Dravago, Nymm and Aryth are complete, though the last 4 are pretty simple for now. |
| NathanD05-15-05, 11:24 AM | Could you post the Celestia files as you update them? |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast05-15-05, 12:26 PM | Could you post the Celestia files as you update them? I'd rather get everything just right before I start posting files. There is still a lot of work to be done, and quite a lot of it looks a bit scrappy. I've made a decent amount of progress on the Eberron texture. It now has blue oceans and a bit of green on the continents (one of the scrappy things that still needs a LOT of work). On the plus side, the clouds now show up :) Here's a sneaky peak: http://www.geocities.com/ieattrollsforbreakfast/ebplanet2.txt The orange moon to the right is Olarune, the white one of the left is Zarantyr, the yellowish one on the left is Nymm and the small red one is Aryth. The dark grey one at the bottom is Sypheros. The colours have been a bit distorted, they show up more clearly in the program. |
| Brastan05-15-05, 04:11 PM | I always thought the Ring of Siberys was thinner. I guess this was in jest ;). But the rings to can be modified. I would guess this is the lowest priority on list of things Trolls is going to do. Here are two quick picts for a ring redraw on Uranus. The first planet to with a thin ring that jumped my mind although Neptuen would have worked as well in retrospect. The original (http://www.public.asu.edu/~jddorn/DnD/Eberron/Celestia/Uranusoldrings.jpg) The redraw (http://www.public.asu.edu/~jddorn/DnD/Eberron/Celestia/Ringresize.jpg) It's basically a line image were each column of pixels represents a band of the ring. Black means no ring, white creates a solid ring. So the thin Ring of Siberys will likely exist when Trolls is done. The hard one, which I would have no clue how to do, would be to move the rings position so that it passes over the southern continents and not the equator. Regardless it's phenomenal image. Even the current texture is lovely. Looking at the blues, greens, and browns of a plant from space always makes my heart ache. :weep: Beautiful. |
| The_Fan05-17-05, 01:15 AM | I know it may be too much to ask, but is there any way that you could incorporate this with the calendar utility to figure out what the sky looks like on any given day? |
| Marshall Stone05-17-05, 02:32 AM | I know it may be too much to ask, but is there any way that you could incorporate this with the calendar utility to figure out what the sky looks like on any given day? What an awesome idea. THAT I'd pay good, hard-earned money to see. And Troll-Eater great work again on that shot of Khorvair with the rings, the moons, and the clouds. Thanks. |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast06-05-05, 04:55 PM | I haven't been able to spend much time on this lately, but I've been doing a bit here and there. I've been trying to get the Ring of Siberys to look good, which is proving difficult! For now, here is a short movie of Eberron from space: http://www.eberronbestiary.com/EbSpace.wmv |
| Euangelion06-06-05, 11:43 AM | That's really cool! Wow!!  I can imagine that the ring will be quite hard to do, apart from putting in tons of tiny little moons all in the same orbit, but who wants to do that? Keep up the great work. |
| Galen_Michael06-06-05, 06:13 PM | Phenomenally cool. Can't wait to see the finished project. Galen |
| Galen_Michael08-23-05, 08:20 PM | Bump. Me want more! Galen |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast08-24-05, 08:26 AM | Thanks for the bump :) I haven't been able to spend much time on the project lately, but I have a bit of time spare now so I'll see what I can do. I think I'm going to have to leave the ring as it is (at least with a better texture perhaps), since putting in lots of moons would take months...then again, I have no deadline! |
