| thought_riot11-06-05, 04:50 PM | When my players go back to Sharn, I'm going to give them some down time, and they're probably gonna wanna gamble. Are there any interesting Eberron-specific games out there? I'm also probably going to allow them to play standard Texas Hold'em, just renaming it. Any ideas for a name for that? |
| Save-vs-DM11-07-05, 05:21 AM | There are a few things. The most common deck of cards in Khorvaire has 4 suits, one for each of the traditional elements (earth, fire, water, wind). I would play a game like rummy or bridge that emphasizes using the suits of cards and just call it something like Elements. In the City of Towers novels Jode makes reference to a card game called Twelves. I just made up somes rules for twelves. Twelves: An Eberron Card Game Note: Twelves was first mentioned in the novel City of Towers by Keith Baker. The Deck Twelves can be played with a standard deck of playing cards, without the jokers. In Eberron, the cards have a single small number and a representation of a different dragonmark. A standard deck of playing cards can be used to represent this. Ace (One): Mark of Detection Two: Mark of Finding Three: Mark of Handling Four: Mark of Healing Five: Mark of Hospitality Six: Mark of Making Seven: Mark of Passage Eight: Mark of Scribing Nine: Mark of Sentinel Ten: Mark of Shadow Jack (Eleven): Mark of Storm Queen (Twelve): Mark of Warding King (Thirteen): Mark of Death Objective The objective of the game is to lay down all of your cards on the table in combinations that number twelve. For instance, you could lay down a five and a seven or a two, a four, and a six. Each time you lay down a twelve, you score twelve points. Most games are played to 144 points. Gameplay Each player is dealt a hand of seven cards and the rest of the deck is placed in the center of the table. Play proceeds clockwise starting with the player to the left of the dealer. During your turn you first draw a card from either the draw pile or the discard pile, then lay down as many twelves as you can, then discard a card to the discard pile. Gameplay ends when a player has laid all of his cards down on the table. Scoring Standard games are played to a total of 144 points. Laying down a twelve scores you 12 points. If you lay down a twelve that is all one suit (such as hearts (fires)), you instead score 24 points. If you manage to lay down all of your cards on your first turn, you score 48 bonus points. When a player lays down all of his cards and goes out, all remaining players subtract the number of points they still have in their hand from their current score. If a player has a twelve in his hand he may lay it down to avoid loosing points, but does not score any points for that twelve. If a player has a thirteen in his hand when another player goes out, he looses an additional 13 points. Betting on Twelves Players can bet on twelves, generally laying down 12 coppers or silvers at the beginning of each hand of cards. The player who wins the round (scoring 144 points) gains the entire pot. Finally, you could use dice games as well, which tend to work better at the card table. The one I used is called Ship, Captain, Mate, and Crew. Ship, Captain, Mate, and Crew Also known as Battleship, Mariner, Destroyer and sometimes just Ship. Sometimes played in bars for drinks. Five dice are used. Play: Each player takes it in turn throwing the dice. In each turn a player has three throws of the dice and tries to roll and put to one side a 6 (the ship), a 5 (the captain), and 4 (the mate). The 6, 5, and 4 may not be rolled out of order so if the first throw contains a 6 and 4, but not a 5, only the 6 is put aside and the rest of the dice, including the 4, are rolled again. If a player fails to throw the 6, 5, and 4 after their three throws they score nothing. If after three throws a player has put aside the ship, captain and mate the remaining two dice (the crew) are totalled to form the players score. If all three in the sequence are rolled before the third and final throw then the remaining two dice (the crew) are rolled in the remaining turn(s) to improve the total of the players score. The player with the highest crew total wins. In the case of an equally high total all players must play the round again. Cheers! Save vs DM |
| thought_riot11-07-05, 06:42 AM | Question on the dice game, if the player rolls 4,5,6 on the first throw, and say two 1's, and then they roll the two other dice two more times, and get 2 1's and then 2 2's, is the score 8 or 4? |
| Save-vs-DM11-08-05, 05:09 AM | The score would be 8 Roll One: 1 + 1 = 2 Roll Two: 1 + 1 = 2 (4) Roll Three: 2 + 2 = 4 (8) Cheers, Save vs DM |

You could place them in Sharn during the Race of Eight winds, which they could bet on. There is even a Dragonshard article about the race. I recently ran a Clawfoot obstacle course race in Gatherhold which our group's Talentan PC won. Some of the other PCs bet on her, and with the odds as they were, came up quite a bit more wealthy than they were before. As far as interesting games. Karrn's play Conquerer, which I suppose you could bet on, though it is not a card game. |

Yeah, I'm looking for more "casino" games, like card and dice games, that they could play in a tavern over some ale. |

| thought_riot11-09-05, 04:22 PM | Question about twelves: The game ends when a player has laid all of his cards down on the table. Now, if a player has laid all of his cards down, but nobody has reached 144. What happens? |

Just posted this response in a similar-themed thread: I received an early copy of 3 Dragon Ante a couple of months ago, and did some playtesting with it. I wrote up an early preview of what the game is like. Of course, in my early games I played with the wrong victory condition, so take it with a grain of salt. We currently use it as a tavern activity in my Eberron campaign, it's pretty fun. Link below to the review. http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9744 |
