| KissDragon01-08-05, 07:23 PM | * i was writing this post rather fast so dont mind the spelling and other quirky stuff in the posts.* I was wondering, am having kinda hard time picturing Eberron in all its glory, i kind i feal it lacks something, heroes. Dont get me wrong i bet it has them, but i mean characters like Heroes of the lance from Dragonlance Campagin, characters like Drizzit, Elminister, Khelben blacstaff, and others from Forgoten Realms. I mean i got the book, eberron campagin setting and i read it, i inted to have a campagin in it. but i was kinda disapointed that the whole book had not a singe "heroic" character and his stats in the book, not a single one..i mean, we have Laesh Harucc the hobgoblin king illustrated and his character levels written, but..i mean i had no NPC of great importance to relate to. When i read my first campagin setting Dragonlance, i found hundred characters inside to connect with, like dalamar was this, raistilin was that and hi has a brother caramon who is this and that..etc. so i got interested in there lives, and how these characeters reflect the world, so i bought the Dragonlance novels and red them, and then and only then could i see it...trough there eyes..the whole world..them, the people, places, villians, battles..everithing. And i got to love the campagin for it. It was the same for Forgoten realms. And bouth worlds still exist and have a hudge following in the world, (am from Croatia in europe, and well play dnd alot here :P ). And for now Eberron, just like Planescape, Ravenloft, Birthright, and many other dont have them. But having continuing "Heroic" characters in novels and other products we can all relate to, laugh about, or wonder with. Characers that can bring us closer to the world. And i dont mean the generic wierd looking charactrers that appear in PHB and other core books, i forgot the names, but characters like from novels..uh i ranted looong enough..sorry. I think WOTC should think about that, it would be nice. Thank you for your time, and sorry my spelling again, its kinda bad. :) |
| Reinhardt_Wyrd01-08-05, 07:37 PM | The main point: That was precisely the creators idea. It's not Forgotten realms of Epic battles and heroes on every corner saving the world and figthing the gods. It's a somewhat darker world, world when the true heroes are dead, sometimes remebered sometimes forgotten. It's a world after cathastrophe, unstable world in dire need of heroes... who are not there. And that's precisely what's so cool about it. Because in such worlds you don't have to be Epic to be a true hero. And heroism aquires deeper, more intresting meaning. As far as intresting NPCs with stories go. Be patient. Dragonlance was around for many years. There were many books published with characters eventually appearing in the rulebooks. Ebberon is very new campaign setting. We have to wait for some novels still. But for sure there will be. There will be heroes in Ebberon. |
| Dhakaani Heir01-08-05, 08:09 PM | Can't find any heros who you can get a feel for? Worry not in the next 12 months we will see the launch of 4, yes 4 Eberron novel series one by Hellcow! Marked for Death by Matt Forbeck The Crimson Talisman by Adrian Cole The City of Towers by Keith Baker The Binding Stone by Don Bassingthwaite |
| Bluebrush01-08-05, 08:50 PM | The basic idea is that the PCs are heroes. Sure, at low levels they fight low CR enemies, but might still deal with world-shaking events. When they reach higher levels, the PCs are amoung the best of the best. Only they can save mankind. If they screw up, the world is dealt a blow. There is no Elminster to step in and make sure things go alright, since most of the high level NPCs are busy/evil/both. |
| Lujayne3401-08-05, 10:33 PM | there are a few heros described briefly throught the text. For example Baristi the Shifter Wizard, Azm the warforged, Savras the Ranger etc. Not complete stats by any means but some description. |
| CzarGarrett01-08-05, 11:21 PM | Maybe in a few years and a few more modules, we'll have a handful of 'heroes'. Although I figure they'll only be something like level 8 or 9. We could have some sort of like Hobgoblin Fgt/Bard who is known for wandering Khorvaire and telling tales about the old Dhakanni Empire. Or maybe a Swashbuckler out of the Lhazzer Principalities, infamous for her exploits on the sea. |
| KissDragon01-09-05, 05:29 AM | I see what you mean, and some of you might have a point. but for the other part i didnt mean i want uber NPC heroes to save the PCs or to be a guide there off. My point is that it would be really a good thing for Eberron to have some characters that appeare in the novels, and wee see them traveling the world, living in it, fighting, falling in love..and all that other stuff creatures of the world do. I and to see them grow trought novel to novel, then appearing in the official products..well some of you know what i mean. Lets just say i reallly lived much of the North of Forgoten Realms just by reading Drizzits Do urden novels. But yeah maybe in time we get some of these cool characers we can all talk about. Thanx for your time. PS. one more thing, im a player(dm) of dnd, in all its forms, and worlds for over 13 years, i have writen 100 adventures and such, i have so much work put in to the roleplaying world that i can honestly say i know alot. and from that ill say this. Keath Baker you did an incredible job writing eberron. Its inovative, and interesting, fast, romantic, dark, and heroic...and never lets me rest my mind, but always offering new ideas and ways how to work with dnd. Excelent work. |
| CzarGarrett01-09-05, 10:53 AM | But yeah maybe in time we get some of these cool characers we can all talk about. Unfortunately, that just means we'll have conversations that go somewhat like this: Drizzt is teh sux0r! Jaaf pwns! No way. In the adventure "Nerd Internet War", Jaaf is clearly able to fend off 11 hill giants with fighter levels, Drizzt never could do that. Yous both rong. Rasitlin woudl eat both there souls |
| Leagle01-09-05, 12:26 PM | The setting does have "Indiana Halas Martyn" as a lasting villain/rival. He embodys the feel of the exploration part of the setting and is mentioned in... one dragonshard. And I'd like to point out that Ravenloft had Von Stalhein. |
| nyysjan01-09-05, 12:31 PM | i don't want to talk about heroes i want to be one :D or my personality being as it is i'd probably make a great villain :P |
| Leagle01-09-05, 02:10 PM | That would be Halas Martain... I was thinking of a Martijn and came to a compromise. And the other guy is from Biggles, he really begins with R. Dr R____? |
| Korhal_IV01-09-05, 02:41 PM | Lets just say i reallly lived much of the North of Forgoten Realms just by reading Drizzits Do urden novels. But yeah maybe in time we get some of these cool characers we can all talk about. Yeah, but now it's :censored: -ing impossible to ever run an adventure in the northern part of Faerun without players plotting to get Drizzt on their side, or Alustriel, or Bruenor. I like this idea that there aren't a bunch of high level uber-NPCs wandering around. My party's 4th-level cleric is setting up to be a cult leader in Sharn - and he's got the muscle to do it. Not in FR he wouldn't. |
| Jastra of the clawed hand01-09-05, 03:52 PM | I must agree. It's a totally different feeling to actually be able to become a hero yourself. I mean a lvl 5 character IS already someone in Eberron. He's probably well-known in his home region and he is the one the people come to when things need doing. |
| LK02-08-05, 08:29 AM | I like the setting because the PCs are the heroes. No deus ex machina in the form of Elminster. I also like the wide-magic setting which has influence people in the same way technology does in this world. ie. everyone has a radio/potions but not many own space shuttles/lightning rails. The wide-magic setting makes it easy to do things like paratroopers~ fighters dropped from airships equipped with feather fall potions. Plus Eberron has my two fave LA0 races~ warforged and changeling. Like KB, I dislike too much LA. |
| Nived02-08-05, 10:45 AM | Well the first novel is out so maybe we have those iconic heroes on their way. Remember at the beginning of Dragons of the Autumn Twilight Raistlin Majere was hardly the iconic evil mage he is today. So maybe Daine, Lei, Pierce etc will become that world defining even though their 'low level' now. Soon enough we'll be hearing "Pierce Clone" to describe warforged PCs in the same breath as Drizzt, Raistlin, or even Legolas! Sad thing is while reading City of Towers I was disturbed by the severe number of similarities between my Warforged's background and Pierce's... even though I'd been playing Sprint for at least a month before the novel came out.... At least I use a halbred instead of a bow/flail... because the backstories are errily similar. |

The nice thing I found from reading the novel was that, while the characters were really well-fleshed out, and had exciting and intriguing adventures, they never came off as being incredibly powerful. I can't really imagine them being above sixth level, and I'm more inclined to put them at fourth or so. So while we may well have iconic characters coming out, your PCs will still be able to be the big heroes of the game. Who knows? A powerful character might even get Pierce or Daine as a cohort! =} As long as we don't mind fanboys (and fangirls) going on about how Drizzt or Elminster could beat Pierce or Lei in a fight, then we'll be fine! |
| Gurv02-08-05, 11:35 AM | I think it will be nice to have some novels out there, and I look forward to getting my hands on the first one this weekend. But I am hoping that those heroes are never important. I want to see them walk around, see the world of Eberron through their eyes, hear their story, and never, ever, have to worry about where they are or how their actions could impact my game. The PCs are the heroes of the setting. If Eberron were a movie, they would be the main characters. No one else. I have a player (warlock, 4th level), who is manipulating the Boromars to get done what he needs. In another setting, I couldn't do that, because I would have to take into account the fact that if the largest crime organization in Sharn could be manipulated by a 4th level character, then someone like Elminster or Mordekainen would already be doing it. In Eberron, I don't have to assume the existance of other people cooler than the players. And that is what makes it fun. |
