Eberron Movie...someone had to do it [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-21-06, 09:56 AM There has been alot of talk over the years on the FR boards about a movie. Not sure that it will ever happen but I wanted to see what everyone thought of an Eberron movie. Considering WOTC preferential treatment of the setting I think an Eberron movie is more likely and will not suffer from all the LOTR ripoff naysayers.

What do you think? Should they film one of the novels? A new story? What about actors and directors?

All I have so far is Nathan Fillion for Daine.

12-21-06, 10:13 AM Truth is, I'd hate to see an Eberron movie, or at least have a love/hate thing. One of the great things about an RPG is the much like and perhaps even more so than in a book, the universe exists entirely in the collected minds of participants, allowing them to inject part of themselves into the the reality. Seeing a movie would make Eberron much more concrete and resistant to the internal personalization that makes the RPG such a compelling form of narrative.

Of course, I'm not saying I'm objectively correct in this, this is just the way I see it.

No it won't. If they do make an Eberron movie it will probley be in Xen'drik. It would start in Storm Reach, go into the Jungles of Xen'Drik, get lost. Fight Drow, Ogres, and some nasty Aberrations. After words they stumble upon an Ancient Temple, it would probley belong to an Eldritch Giant Lich (Any Giant Lich would do). Yet instead of being the evil guy, this Lich would be good, and then an Evil Coutal drops in and ruins everything. Corrupted by the Lords of Dust he wants the Liches Artifact, aka his Phylactry.

Then at the end, the Heroes defeat the Evil Coutal, only to be betrayed by the Lich and has them teleported off his area. They land in Sarlona, only to be siezed by the local population. The movie would end when an Inspired turns around and you can see her eyes flash purple. Then when the camera zooms out to end, a Quori outline flashes.

That would be a sweet movie imo. :P

12-21-06, 07:12 PM Considering WOTC preferential treatment of the settingWhat preferential treatment? Last time I checked, Faerun sourcebooks being produced still outnumber Eberron books by a great deal, there are more faerun novels being written, etc.

Last time I checked, Faerun was still being treated as the big man on campus, with Eberron just starting to get treated like a legitimate setting.

12-21-06, 08:39 PM I personally believe that any DnD movie, especially an eberron one should be animated. Firstly, unless some big wig took on the job it wouldn't have the funding to get the special effects needed to make it worth while. And secondly....ok I guess the first one encompesses the main problem.

But if it was well animated and treated still like a full feature film it could rule like big time. I actually think that an animated series would be the best for the eberron seeting. an onlgoing show that features a few different groups( much like the various novels for the setting) but would try to intertwine the stories together loosely. But again, it would need a huge fan base to make it ever happen....

An eberron animated series and a planescape animated series...if only I were a multi-bilionaire I would totally produce such a thing.....

12-22-06, 10:08 AM Here's an interesting fact. Right now there's an animated version of Dragons of the Autumn Twilight, the first Dragonlance novel being produced.

Lucy Lawless (Xena), Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor from Smallville), Keifer Sutherland (the guy from 24) will be doing some of the voices.

I'd imagine how well that does will be the benchmark for whether or not Wizards of the Coasts decides to make any more setting specific movies.

I would like to have some video sequences of certain places (Sharn, the Mournland, etc.), but I don't think any movie would live up to our expectations. Think about it; nobody makes big budget movies to a small core audience. Movies today are made to have mass appeal. The only way to make any movie appeal to a mass audience, if it has "D&D" attached to its name, is if it constantly reassures the audience that they are, in fact, much cooler than any of the hard-core fans. Thus, an overabundence of self-depricating nerd jokes.

Now, if it were possible to make a movie about a world much like Eberron, but without the D&D name attached to it, it could maybe be a good movie, but even then I doubt it. It's just too hard to get anyone to invest money in a movie today that doesn't cater to the lowest-common denominator.
