Eberron NPC Ideas

Alright everyone, I'm about to start off with my first time ever DMing more than a one-shot mission. And I've chosen Eberron for my Campaign World, because - well I could list off every reason possible, but saying you're in this thread, I'm sure you all love it as much as I do.

But as I am reviewing my books for missions and campaign hooks, I keep thinking about great PCs I could make. But I'm charged with other matters, so my only solution to my dilemna is to create many interesting NPCs that my PCs can interact with.

To help support this idea, I have decided that I am going to introduce many NPCs to my PCs as they advance and earn prestige in the great city of Sharn. So the PCs starting at level one and in the lower wards of Sharn will get to watch the NPCs advance to the upper districts and earn their own prestige as the PCs do.

Now, because I have players participating in the Message Boards, I can't post everything about the NPCs, especially how they will advance.

But enough of that, let's get this road on the show!

Wyllm Spearwrite - NG Gnome Bard
:Wilym has always dreamed of becoming an established playwrite and actor. However, he wasn't born rich and has had to fend for himself in the lower wards. Trying to accomplish his dreams he has earned little more than a few coppers from local taverns, but this has done nothing to diminish his spirits.

Nameless - CN Changeling Rogue
:Nameless is a branded thief. However, several exceptions were taken in his case. Instead of arcane scribing from House Sivis, the guards skipped the wait, and branded him with good ol' fashion searing hot iron. Born to wear his mark and unable to leave the city due to other shadier reasons, Nameless is forced to stay in Sharn. However, being branded and unable to flee, many other brigands are able to take advantage of Nameless and regularly abuse him. From his beatings and disturbed past, Nameless has developed a sort of post-child Dissociativ Identity Disorder [Multiple Personalities]. Nameless now struggles internally with his many different personalities. One interesting trait about Nameless is that he will change appearance as he changes personality. He often assumes the personality and appearance of those in his past who have brought him to this point. i.e. The Sharn Watch and his former Gang Boss

Ares Silverblade - LG Half-Elf Paladin
:Ares is the complete stereotypical uptight defender of faith. Living in the upper districts and born to a rich family, Ares is incredibly prejudice and biased in his opinions of others. However, always searching for the correct and "good" way, Ares seldom accomplishes this task. Ares can easily charm over strangers, but finds it impossible to make long term friends due to his clashing beliefs.

Thor - NG Warforged Fighter
:Thor is one of the many Warforged searching for meaning in his life. However, he has found contentment with a hammer in his hand and a forge in front of him. His hobby and solace rests in blacksmithing. Not searching for meaning anymore and content with his position, Thor has settled in the lower districts of Sharn as a common blacksmith. However, the hammer cannot always provide solace.

Rurik Ra'nagor - LG Dwarf Rogue
:Rurik is current in the Sharn Watch. Rurik joined out of the drive to find justice and good. However, being positioned in the lower wards, Rurik has slowly began to see the corruption of the lower Watch. Becoming more and more disgusted with his colleagues, Rurik has began questioning his occupation.

Now that's all I have for now. I can't post every NPC, because some are going to be tied into the first few missions and that would end up ruining the mystery and multi-layered plots.

But if anyone has any ideas for Eberron-inspired NPCs found in Sharn, please feel free to post them. Anything will help.

Those look like some interesting characters. A couple questions though. Can nameless, who sounds quite interesting by the way, hide his brand through his changeling abilities? I'd think that he should be able to. Also, is Ares a paladin of the silver flame or of the sovereign host?

Two idea's

Drol- An advanced Ghast with 8 undead Hit die, 2 Barbarian Levels and the Fiendish template. He works for (duh) the order of the emerald Claw. He uses Spear's for throwing, a variety for daggers for closer range throwing, and his claws and bite for melee combat.

Kall- Multi-Classed Orc Paladin/Ranger, eventually going into Knight of the Chalice, from Complete Warrior. Born in one of the carrion tribes, he still bears the scars on his face from the brands he received as a member of the tribe. He keeps them to remind himself of his past life, to keep him on the virtous path, and to remind himself that no one is beyond redemption.

Anyway, back on topic. One day he was hunting the wastes when he and 3 others came across a Planetar. The Planetar, sensing souls that might yet me Redeemed, Convinced them of the might of the powers of good.Having heard the call Kaluk Shash, They immediately left for Maruk clan.

Now, 5 years later, Kall now seeks to combat the forces of darkness and villainy, while at the same time Recuiting others to hear the call of the Kaluk Shash.

Alternatively, Your party could run into him as he is Chasing down a demon that escaped from the wastes.

Glimm:
-Ares is a paladin of the silver flame.
-Nameless could hide his brand, but opts not to as a constant reminder of his past. Also, Nameless is my most favorite creation yet. I'm hoping to really elaborate on him and my players will have a fun time trying to figure out his past.

ydirbut:
-I like both of the idea. Drol seems like a great recurring villiam. I might think about classing him with Assassin and sending him after the PCs.
-And Kall would be a fun character to have, but I think I'd rather use him if the PCs ever venture outside of Sharn than inside the city.

This now brings me to my own Paladin idea.

[Name pending, any ideas?] - LG Human Paladin
:This character is a traveler. Unlike most paladins he hasn't resided with any church, but does worship the Sovereign Host. He is highly religious on a personal level. Claiming to speak with the Gods in two-way conversations. However, his conversations seem more of the kind of a crazed group of brigands at a bar. "They say they can get me out of this one, but you, well you're screwed." are the extent of his religious preachings. But, however unlikely his faith seems, he does seem to land himself out of many unlikely situations. This character is inspiried by the King of Ireland from Braveheart.

You might find use for a back-up character of mine:

Kis'sus Rarl, 'of Sharn'
LG - Female Shifter (Long strider) Urban Ranger/Favored Soul -> Exorcist of the Silver Flame
Feats to L3: Educated, Nimbus (exalted feat)
Kis'sus was taken in while a lost orphan by one of the more sensitive members of the Church of the Silver Flame who later came to realize her real potential. Trained first as an Urban Ranger in Sharn, favoured enemy Evil Outsiders, she suddenly found her calling, as a Favored Soul. She is a somewhat lost individual out of place amongst her own kind who don't care for the Silver Flame, and seriously frowned upon by the Church institution of whom many dissapprove of her shifter background and her being a favored soul. Her refuge is study, both books and the people and happenings of Sharn, with little reason often to talk she watches and listens and is finely tuned to the pulse of the city. She has just now finally gained enough courage to take her own pilgrimage to see the silver 'geyser' in Thrane. When she does run into outright bigotry she will respond with her nimbus, which usually deals with awkward Silver Flamer's, but often only further isolates her from others around her. She would be very grateful to find a companionable adventuring party to join with.

KathyNoland:
-Lord Valten could work. Usually I'm not a big fan of using Lord in my names, but saying that he carries himself as a king [even if he's crazy], he'd have to go buy something along the lines of Lord.

Thramzorean:
-I like Kis'sus Rarl. She'd be a great addition to the PCs if they started heading into an evil dungeon or something of the sort.

Ojoxsofeta:
-I like Luther, and I like the tie to MLK day today. So saying that it is MLK day, I'm going to name the paladin King Luther. Thanks!

Idea for a sharn campaign.

Vince- NG hobgoblin bard with perform (oratory). Think Marxist soapbox Preacher dude. Preachs about corruption, racial equality, poverty, crime etcetera. Insert into Either Lower Dura or Lower Tavick's landing.

Kamak- NG Orc Fighter. Bodyguard for Vince. From Lower Precarious, prevouisly a dockworker. Very somber and silent.

Vilok- LN Half-Orc Monk. From the shadow marches, has lots of Knowledge skills, not actually from a monastery. Seeks Knowledge and enlightenment in the world at large. Has a High strength and uses unarmed and thrown Javelins/ Daggers.

I know my players enjoyed their main contact, Gax.

Gax is a gnome expert/rogue who fought during the Last War with the party. Gax has only a few reasons for his existance; he knows everyone, and everyone seems to know Gax. Gax also works for the game's newspaper the "Five Nations Commoner" and runs the food section (since I love the fact I can take the players to a restraunt around Sharn/Khorvaire) to have a real nice bite to eat while they are explained their next adventure.

(smile)

Gax is of course in reference to the legendary Gary Gygax.

ydirbut:
:it seems like someone has a certain affinity for goblins and orcs. I like Vince. I especially like the tie with Marx. A communist Orc, who would've ever thought?

Reylan:
:I really like Gax. I like how well he fits into any story and how useful he could be. I will definately use a character like Gax in my campaign. Thnaks!

Thanks everyone!

Wonderful, it's actually it's an idea for a pc I had (i'm DM, along with Kall). On a side note, Vince is a hobgoblin.

William Armstrong ( Kudos if you recognise this reference)
Invalid Human Sorceror. Can walk, but can't run and has a very low con. Wears Bright red clothing and has a Scarlet Ibis for a familiar. He's from Zarashk .

Thramzorean:
-I like Kis'sus Rarl. She'd be a great addition to the PCs if they started heading into an evil dungeon or something of the sort.

"Why were my parents butchered in thy temple, their throats slit, their blood offered unto thou, their blood poured upon thine altar in thy name?" First question asked by Dame Kis'sus Rarl, shifter, Favored Soul of the Silver Flame, to the Silver Flame on completion of her pilgrimage to Flamekeep. The Flame burns on.

"Or something of the sort..." perhaps mixed up with some possessed/manipulated NPC of the group's acquaintance, a professor at the university who's sending the party off on quests who actually turns out to be possessed or manipulated by the Lords of Dust or similar. The players have inadvertantly been doing dirty deeds for the wicked mwaaahaha ;)

I'm not sure the moderators will allow that last story-line piece though it's true enough for the character... (???)

Jacques Lapi- Human Bounty Hunter (Ranger). Parents where War refugees from Breland, Near the Thrane border. His parents fled Breland after their village was destroyed in a battle. Father was a Expert Shipwright, mother was a House wife. Moved to Zarashk becauses of it's trade and it's status as a major port city.

Thanks everyone for your ideas!

Ydirbut, this one's for you. It's also going to be a cameo appearance of a former comic relief character from some of my one-shot adventures.

Bopu: NN Goblin Fighter
:Bopu was originally seen in a one-shot raid of an orc and goblinoid base. He was the innocent cook and died a horrible horrible death at the hands of the PC. I guess they thought killing him was funnier than his original antics.
Bopu is the ideal goblin. He's not the brightest nor the wisest; however, he is rather charismatic and can carry his words with the other goblinoids. Due to this, he has found himself as King Bopu of the Gnarlfoot clan! If you've read anything on Gully Dwarves from Dragonlance, that is a perfect example of the Gnarlfoot clan, and Bopu is simply the blind leader. And what better to serve as a crown than his dented up cooking pot?

I've also worked a lot on Nameless, the D.I.D. Changeling. I figured out several of his personalities that will be most prevelant in conversation with him. Unfortunately, I can't post any exacts details on Nameless, because he is going to be in my campaign, and he needs to keep some shread of anonymity. I'll post more after the PCs find out more.

Meztal Gurinam (NE Halfling Rogue) - Meztal is loosely affiliated with the Boromar clan, but most people don't really know what he does for them. He is frequently seen at the various fights that the clan hold, schmoozing with the more important attendees.

Knowledge local (DC30): Meztal is the primary procurer of monstrous gladiators, specifically they unwilling. When a good fighter is in the pit against some strange beast, it is always a beast that Meztal has contracted to be brought to Sharn. Due to the dangerous nature of this acquisition, he is always on the lookout for persons capable of capturing these creatures, quietly and efficiently.

Thanks Splendide, I like the idea for Meztal Gurinam.

And I'll actually probably use an NPC with parallels to him, or if you don't mind, the same NPC. His business and associates would make create a nice ironic flare in my campaign. :Wink Wink:
