| Takasi07-13-04, 03:38 PM | Please test and provide feedback: http://home.comcast.net/~takasi/eberron_demographics.htm This should follow the last Dragonshards article. I'm waiting for feedback from Keith for his new "large city" info. Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see added to the site. I may add some dragonmark info, and maybe some tables and/or generators for random NPCs. |
| Sancus07-13-04, 05:36 PM | Your site is using a nonstandard IEism in the javascript -- it expects <input name="population"> to create a property named "population" on the global scope, but that is IE-only behaviour. |
| Takasi07-13-04, 05:43 PM | My apologies to the 5% of users out there without IE. :P I'll see what I can do. |
| Sancus07-13-04, 05:49 PM | More and more people are turning away from IE as they realize that it's a very insecure, poor browser :) Not to mention, incompliant with standards on such things as javascript. |
| Darkest9007-13-04, 05:51 PM | What does 'NaN' mean? |
| Radazim07-13-04, 05:51 PM | Are you logging browser type? You might be surprised at how many people are running Mozilla. (Personally, I only use IE when backed into a corner, and I make sure that NAV, Adaware, and HijackThis! are all updated before I do.) IE = teh suq. m0z!||4 r00|z. ;) |
| Sancus07-13-04, 05:58 PM | Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/), sir! |
| Takasi07-13-04, 06:03 PM | Yes, yes, I was only kidding. Give it another try and let me know how it goes. |
| Sancus07-13-04, 06:04 PM | Works now! |
| Takasi07-13-04, 07:24 PM | I updated the page to include an option for using the variant "metro" rules. Check it out and let me know what you think! |
| kildaere00707-13-04, 07:47 PM | how come it seems to not generate any monks? |
| Sancus07-13-04, 07:58 PM | err it generates monks fine, as far as I can tell? They're just after magewrights.. |
| Takasi07-13-04, 08:06 PM | What population did you enter? The smallest areas have a community modifier of -3, so if monks are 1d3 + community for the highest level then you won't have any monks. |
| kildaere00707-13-04, 09:53 PM | ahhh that must be it |
| mythusmage07-14-04, 01:24 AM | I can't get your site to load in either Netscape or iCab. I suspect the problem lies with your host. Might I suggest a small monetary sacrifice on a monthly basis for a pay host? (I pay $5.00 a month for my spot.) N.B.: The latest browsers do not work with Mac OS 9.2, and OS X does not work on the first two generations of iMac. Update: Now it's working with Netscape. BTW, what the freepin farglesnark is "NaN"? |
| Takasi07-14-04, 01:32 AM | I am working on getting this page hosted on a different site. I'll post details soon. |
| mythusmage07-14-04, 01:52 AM | As I noted in my update I got it to work. But I have noticed a possible problem. I'm working with the Metro version and a population of 200,000. Unfortunately, for some reason the results could not be saved. Anyway, a little something about the Aristocrat results caught my eye. First, the result for 1st level Aristocrats was "NaN". The progression also followed a consistent 3 times/one sixth past level two. That is, there were 32 2nd level Aristocrats, 96 3rd level, 16 4th level, and so on and so forth. Methinks you've got a bug here. |
| Takasi07-14-04, 01:59 AM | I'll take a look at it tomorrow. You can use the normal version for a large metropolitan area too; the "metro" feature is for the new rules Hellcow posted today. I was a little rushed in doing the conversion so I'll work on the bugs tomorrow. NaN means "Not a Number" but I haven't seen this come up yet. I'll try to duplicate it tomorrow and double check the generated values. |
| mythusmage07-14-04, 02:59 AM | I think I discovered the problem. When writing large numbers I'm in the habit of using commas to separate millions from thousands from hundreds. As in '200,000'. When I do that in your utility I get the 'NaN' result at the bottom of the long lists. But when I write it out '200000' in the entry field I don't get the 'NaN'. Live and learn. BTW, if possible a 'printer friendly' page for results would be nice. And thanks for the work. |
| mythusmage07-14-04, 03:14 AM | Just for grins I tried the minimum of 40 and 'other' and got the following results: Adepts: 1 3rd Aristocrats: 2 2nd, 1 4th Commoners: 1 10th, 2 5th, 4 2nd, 18 1st Experts: 1 2nd Magewrights: 1 5th, 2 2nd Warriors: 1 3rd, 1 1st. Comes out to 35 people. Some folks is missin’. Then there is the matter of the 'inbetween' levels. In a thorp I can see some gaps, but in larger communities? And what about multi-class characters? (For that matter, why would a 5th level magewright take up residence in a thorp? I see adventure potential here:D ) |
| Sancus07-14-04, 12:18 PM | Normal NPC generation rules do not produce multiclass characters. |
| JohnnyONeal07-14-04, 11:24 PM | Takasi worked with me to get this great tool posted on the Eberron Journal. Check it out! http://www.coveworld.net/eberron/demographics.html |
| kildaere00707-14-04, 11:39 PM | I have one request (unless there is a simple way to do it - and I just don't know about it). Is there a way you could set up an export button that will export a tabbed file (or in other words print friendly) of the charts results, your work is AWESOME and I would hate to not use it simply because I have to retype the numbers (You can't seem to be able to cut and paste the table results). I used your generator to generate 2 cities last night and I spent A LOT of time retyping all the numbers. Anyway if you are adding features, this is a request :-). |
| Takasi07-14-04, 11:46 PM | For now you should be able to copy (not export) the page to Excel, though the results aren't pretty. I can create a submit button that sends the data to a server, formats it into a simple table and then sends it back in html. I won't have it up until Friday though; I'm taking a small vacation tomorrow. And there are probably much better ways to display this using xml, so if anyone wants to help me I would greatly appreciate it. |
| kildaere00707-14-04, 11:52 PM | Yea I tried word and excel (trying to covert table to text and a bunch of other data wranglings) and the results were headache inducing. So I hand retyped the results while keeping your generator window off to the side....that will have to do for now. Thanks for all your hard work! This is an awesome tool! |
| Latif Khan07-15-04, 06:20 AM | with both of those demographic generators, i get wrong numbers. Try 123000 as population, and add together all the lvl 1 people... you'll end up above 123000 with them alone. |
| mythusmage07-15-04, 08:45 AM | That's easy, you have multiclass NPCs in the mix. No reason a person can't be a Commoner1/Expert: Blacksmith2. The real problem comes when the number of classed individuals comes short of the community's total population. This means that some of the people living there have no Class at all. |
