| Hopeless07-31-07, 03:31 AM | After reading the comic that was released last year and reading up on a thread dealing with who would be cast in a feature based on this setting it got me wondering. In addition to which would you rather be released... An audio adventure attached to a scenario providing an interesting extra or an actual animated short to introduce players to the joys of Eberron like for instance showing a battle atop a lightning rail with a shifter fighting off elements of the Emerald Claw who are intent on kidnapping a passenger aboard the rail... What do you think? |
| The80307-31-07, 04:17 AM | Audio audio audio. Here are more details regarding my thoughts on this issue. These are just my opinions; you may not feel the same way. Animation is a huge amount of work if you want it done well. I don't want to see animation based on 3D shapes from a videogame. Eberron would benefit from something at the level of Samurai Jack, Thundercats, or the old CBS cartoon, and that look would have to be developed by a dedicated team of fans. Audio is not much easier, but audio is more about good selection of raw talent than animation, which is just a long hard slog of thousands of work-hours. I'd like to see a rebirth of pulp radio based in Eberron. Let's do this: 1. get a hundred improv audio plays 2. pick the best one, by a ballot of keyframe animators and in-betweeners 3. start animating around the winning audio play |
| Charles Phipps07-31-07, 04:24 AM | I agree, Audio dramas would be pretty damn sweet and you wouldn't have to pay for nearly as much. I own the Big Finish Doctor Who ones and they're absolutely awesome. You could get some real voice talent for it as well that would otherwise be unaffordable. We could have regular adventures of Daine and company or Miss Greykill. Plus, you could do a Lord Vader reverb for the Lord of Blades. |
| Hopeless07-31-07, 07:08 AM | And I can help wondering what character would work best for the likes of Stephen Fry or Hugh Laurie for that matter, sorry I've listened to one of those dr who audio's and even remember back when they did a Batman, Spiderman and even Superman audio tapes. I'm thinking Aundairan Wizard for Fry perhaps a changeling at that, and as for Hugh Laurie perhaps a cleric of the Silver Flame with the same sort of personality as the one he uses for House? Who do you hear when you imagine someone's speaking the role of Daine , Lord of Blades or even Greykill? (Got her name wrong, darn!) |
| Charles Phipps07-31-07, 07:37 AM | Who do you hear when you imagine someone's speaking the role of Daine , Lord of Blades or even Greykill? (Got her name wrong, darn!) Daine: John Simms Lord of Blades: Since you can't get James Earl Jones, the guy who does Vader for the Lucasfilm video games. Greykill: Jennifer Hale (the voice of Bastilla for Star Wars: KOtOR) Yes, apparently, Cyreans have British accents. Brelanders can be portrayed by Americans. |

So does that make Aundaire, French Thrane are Spanish Karrnath are German So what are the Lhazaar if not American? And what about Q'barra? What do you mean James Earl Jones isn't available? |
| CannibalSmith07-31-07, 12:48 PM | If anyone should do an Eberron animation, its Disney. They've already done Spelljammer (Treasure Planet). |
| Troy81207-31-07, 08:59 PM | So what are the Lhazaar if not American? Pirates! Arrrrrrh And what about Q'barra? Jamaicans mon... lol |
| Charles Phipps07-31-07, 09:03 PM | So what are the Lhazaar if not American? They get to be the "exotic foreigners" with Sinbad the Sailor like accents. What do you mean James Earl Jones isn't available? Well, everyone would recognize him as Darth Vader. It should be Darth Vader LIKE not a complete rip off ;-) |
| DragoonDarkfire07-31-07, 09:38 PM | If anyone should do an Eberron animation, its Disney. They've already done Spelljammer (Treasure Planet). Oh GOD no. Unless Disney gets a good director and producer and actually does a film in style similar to Pirates of the Caribbean then I would puke out all my inners. |
| Demangel07-31-07, 10:12 PM | I think Christopher walken would absolutely have to be in the show somewhere. I could see him playing the part of maybe a Sharn inquisitive easy. Maybe an elf to boot so he could have special scrying powers... Then he could walk around the city and occasionaly stop someone at what would appear to be random and say: "You are in grave Danja... I will help you... what... why are you walking A way? You are in Grave Danja I tell you!" I would also like to see David Caradine (even if only to stop him from selling out to yellow book.com commercials) playing a warforged monk. He would travel the countryside solving problems... maybe looking for someone... you know the drill *que kung fu theme music*. Sean Connery would have to make appearances as a dwarf explorer for sure. Anyway all sillyness asside, a radio show of sorts could be interesting. But if it's done wrong it would turn out to be like those hokey old Buck rogers shows, which might not be such a bad thing mind you... but todays audiences have a stick up their collective dumbed down posteriors and would likely be unable to appreciate it like I might :) |
| Revvecor07-31-07, 10:14 PM | Unless Disney gets a good director and producer and actually does a film in style similar to Pirates of the Caribbean then I would puke out all my inners. It could be worse, William Shatner could do the whole sound track:cool: :D |
| Ryuu_Tenshi07-31-07, 11:46 PM | It could be worse, William Shatner could do the whole sound track:cool: :D You see that red pool, there? That came from my ears. Just from thinking about that. Thanks. Now I need a mop. |
| Roxlimn08-01-07, 07:09 AM | I think Aniplex ought to do it, in the style of FMA. Or perhaps something more along the lines of Witch Hunter Robin or Read Or Die. |
| Charles Phipps08-01-07, 07:32 AM | The problem with an Eberron animated series is, that, essentially it's a setting. Not a story. Will you be satisfied with a group of Mourners with every Karrn as an antagonist and the Thranes as frothing zealots? |
| Roxlimn08-01-07, 07:36 AM | That would actually sound rather interesting. Better than this Justice League thing that's been airing recently. |
| Charles Phipps08-01-07, 07:38 AM | That would actually sound rather interesting. Better than this Justice League thing that's been airing recently. I dunno, I found Bruce Timm's Justice League to be the best American animation since Batman (also by him). It was a sign you didn't have to be a childish show despite being a child's show. |
| Roxlimn08-01-07, 07:47 AM | I find otherwise. American animation tends to be rather bad in general (mostly because of hackneyed plots) but Justice League is really something else. In many ways I find Ben 10, Avatar, and Invader Zim to be more compelling watches. Heck, I'd rather watch Danny Phantom than Justice League. |
| Charles Phipps08-01-07, 08:02 AM | Heck, I'd rather watch Danny Phantom than Justice League. Your animation choices are ones I tend to look down upon. Obviously, it's a matter of taste though rather than you being objectively wrong (and I hope that is a courtesy returned) |
| Roxlimn08-01-07, 08:52 AM | Well, I can hardly not! ;) In terms of animation quality, Justice League is top notch, easily a match for any of the better animes on the market. It's just that I don't care for the stories they tell and the values they proscribe. I'm curious. Why don't you like Invader Zim and Avatar as much as JL? |
| DragoonDarkfire08-01-07, 02:48 PM | Well obviously when it comes to any animated series you need a) good writers to make good plot and dialog. b) good animation and perhaps an interesting art style to attract newcomers. c) Quality. Pure an simple. Frankly I'd be the first to recommend that there be some Eberron authors (perhaps even Keith himself) for writers. There are plenty of good studios out there that'd be able to do it in a good animated style. Quality is something that is crafted and is much more of an art than just regular moving pictures with words. |
| The White Sorcerer08-01-07, 05:42 PM | So what are the Lhazaar if not American? Scandinavian? |
| Revvecor08-01-07, 08:35 PM | Scandinavian? That was my first thought! |
| DragoonDarkfire08-01-07, 08:56 PM | Why do I picture people native to the Eldeen reaches as having a Louisiana accent? |
| Charles Phipps08-01-07, 09:07 PM | Oddly, I have the Q'Barra as the New Orleans folk. Port city, swamps, noble exiles, come on! |
| DragoonDarkfire08-01-07, 09:28 PM | Oddly, I have the Q'Barra as the New Orleans folk. Port city, swamps, noble exiles, come on! Yea that works but when Aundair was called France the thought just kinda entered me. |
| Samotep08-01-07, 09:38 PM | I have always thought of the Lhazaar Principalities as Pirates of the Caribbean... or maybe Pirates of East Asia... I can see Karnn as German, Thrane seems very Camelot-ish, mebbe French (Morte D'Arthur), Aundair could be English, Breland seems like early America, maybe... I see Eldeen as maybe Scottish or Irish. Xend'rik is kind of South American, Amazon Rainforest-ish, with little Guerilla (drow) freedom fighters! With a little bit of Polynesia in there. Argonessen could also be Polynesian, but maybe more like Rapa Nui or Maori. I don't even know what Sarlona could be... maybe like Manchu Dynasty China. The Valenar are middle eastern, Aerenal are Egyptian (Related races, eh?) |
| kentonblack08-01-07, 09:39 PM | oooooh, right. forgot about the expedition. duh. really, what about racial accents too. I hope there wouldn't be any type of racial stereotyping. That would be just bad... |
| Ogiwan08-02-07, 10:31 AM | Thing is, you don't have to have Terran accents for it. I actually think it would be better to make up an accent. Aundair, for example, would be somewhat "open", since Aundarians are supposed to be flashy and whatnot. It would be AHN-der, or AHN-dare, rather than AUN-dare. Somewhat light. Karrnath would have a heavy accent, perhaps with rolling the Rs (as in Russian), but I would prefer something where a "Ja" (as in, German for yes) is pronounced "Cha". Those are the only two I've figured out. Cyre could have a lot of pitch varients..... |
| Kensan_Oni08-02-07, 02:00 PM | If anyone has ever listened to the Classic Radio Programs, you know what I'm thinking. Serial Podcast show would absolutely rock for Ebberon. It would recapture the pulp drama that it's suppose to emulate by recreating the atmosphere that surrounded the time when it was happening. Comics are neat, mind you, but it would be nothing compared to a full blow Audio Drama. |
| Kensan_Oni08-02-07, 02:04 PM | Lhazzar Provinces are more like Pirates of the North Sea. It's bloody cold up there! The isle's of off Aerenal are more like your Carabbian Isles, right up to and including your Voodoo cults and tropical weather. |

They might not even have to hire people, they could just try it with the developers, and other people who work at Wizards. OOO! For those really small parts, one-liners, like the thug who says, "Your money or your life!" right before the 'forged Ubertank curbstomps him into the ground, they could just put up a notice for people to record themselves saying that and send it in! |
| realdm08-07-07, 10:14 AM | When I watched the Intro of the anime Karas I felt that this was Eberron as I imagined it. Over the top fights, action surges and epic settings... |
| Demangel08-07-07, 09:50 PM | Actually the more I think about this idea, the more I would think I might want in on such a project. The idea I have in mind is to produce an audio show, meant for the internet, which would be supplemented with visual aids in the form of comic renderings of important scenes in the audio which come up on cue to show things that are best shown with an image, not just words... Kind of like 1/2 cartoon, 1/2 radio show from the 20-40's. Even more exciting might be to pretend that these audio shows are actually taking place IN Eberron, that is, house sivis, in cooperation with house Cannith, developed a new kind of communication device that can play audio transmitted across the continent, and maybe a magic quill or something will copy the movements of an artist working during the show to illustrate the scenes. This way one could even include news events, house advertisements durring the broadcast, and more. For one thing, producing an audio show, especially one designed for the internet these days is much simpler than it would have been decades ago when radio first began, and even then it was easy. For one thing, any half assed computer setup could handle all the basic hardware needed to handle much of the audio work, as a good mixing program can do the rest. Voice talent would be the hardest thing to come by, while sound effects I feel would be rather easy... In reality all your doing is telling a story with sound effects, any good story, mixed with a good story tellers showmanship and well trained voice can really come alive. If a web based version were to come out, one thing I think that might really be novel, would be to have the radio show be accompanied by slides... That is, each scene, or each major event could be shown in a comic book style, with everything in between merely spoken. IE not as many cells as a comic would have, but more like a graphic novel (like the crow where every few pages is a picture) with voice acting. Depending on the accent used for certain areas, I know I could easily play the role of a Karn Indeed, one of my PC's in PnP is a Karn ex patriot/soldier (fighter weapon master black knight type who specializes in the long sword, the spear, and mounted combat... picture a dark knight) who speaks in a very light germanic/transylvanian accent. (no he isn't a vampire... at least thats what he always has to tell the party...). I remember durring the first game I played him in I encountered the party in the wilderness with wolves howling in the distance (oooh spooky), I quoted the old movie nosferatu where Dracula says: "Children of the night... What beautiful Music they make..." Which of course made them all think I was a Vampire PC or something and spooked them out that much worse till I explained that wolves were common in my homelands, and their howling was considered a lovely mournful lullaby in our household when i was a boy. "Just build up the fire... Unless these are unnatural wolves, they will not come near enough to be of any danger..." I could easily put together a story based around him as the "dark hero" type, it would be a dark and gritty piece with a lot of the early story being about how he comes to terms with the horrors of the war, and how hard it is for an ex Karn to live in a place like breland where so many have an outright distrust of him just because of who he is. Then comes Glitch, the half finished/destroyed Warforged artificer... One part Comic relief, one part tin can... He starts and finishes most sentences with a strange Bzzzt sound... And when asked has a hard time talking about why almost half his body looks pitted, dented and ruined while the other is pristine... We think it's because he doesn't himself know... Then there is the half elf sorcerer who has several OCD type problems, one of them being paranoia about people knowing what she looked like, or discovering she is a half elf. So far all we know about her is she is looking for her estranged daughter, who was taken from her, or left her for some strange reason she refuses to discuss... For all we know she has been touched by the Nightmare realm or something and is mad... So far it's a group of true misfits... The dark almost stereotypical caricature of an outcast, the broken tinker, and the half mad half elf sorcerer chasing shadows that may not even be real... Include a hard boiled Inquisitive or some other straight man, and we may have something worth recording :) |

| The80308-11-07, 03:44 PM | Procedurally, I think a good place to start is Morgrave University. A dialogue between, say, a Kalashtar emigre-escapee from Adar and a Morgrave history professor would be a good way to lift a curtain on the setting. All you have to do is take an actual history lecture about the aftermath of World War I and modify some names and such. Think of the lecture at the beginning of the Indiana Jones movies. At the end of the lecture, the Kalashtar is teamed up with some of the professor's (ahem) "teaching assistants" and they proceed to go out and get into trouble. I think a big question is whether you want one character with a sidekick or two, or a standard adventuring party. Story-wise, the former is much easier, but the latter is "true to setting," as it were. |

You mean something like; The class had just assembled as people gossiped loudly even as one of the professors stood at the front of the class discussing something with one of the assistants. Someone steps down towards the front of the class as the audience suddenly notices and starts to grow quiet. The figure nimbly leaps down the last set of steps and nodding to the professor and her assistant takes off her coat and casts it onto a spare chair and walks to the front of the class. "So I take it this is all of the students for my lecture?" she asks the professor. "Yes Lady Elaydith," he nods quickly in reply. "Well then I guess we better start, as you know this lecture is about the history of Sharn and of course its relationship with the dragonmark houses... namely my own..." Lady Elaydith d'Cannith began to say cheerily... Sorry couldn't resist throwing in a bit of tomb raider with Raiders of the lost ark so to speak... |
