The Eberron wiki (http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page) on Wikia could use some major improvement, and this is the place to ask for all you devoted fans out there to help it out!

The level of detail there is absolutely pathetic when you compare it to the Forgotten Realms wiki (http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page). Let's all pitch in to improve the quality of the wiki of our favorite setting!

Yeah, been there done that.

There was a ralying call for everyone to "pitch in" and make the Eberron Wiki really complete and I answered that call. Go ahead and go to the wiki, go to recent changes and look at the last 500 changes in the last 30 days. You know what you'll see, nothing but my name plastered all over that page. Go ahead and look at my contribs page and you'll see that almost every page of content that's been done in the past two months was from me with the exception of the Index project that was kicked off by someone else. I spent a solid week writing articles, uploading images, putting in special creations from my own head, and not a single other soul has made a peep about it. So good luck in getting people to work on the page.

Just checked. RFrenchJr is right; there are nearly only his updates. No one else has made anything there. It's a sad attempt to create a good information page. Q'Barra doesn't (among other nations) have a page of its own.

Thank you, RFrenchJr.

That was very kind of you and you deserve a round of applause for all you've done.

As a favor for the Wiki project, I've done the following short entries.

I'm glad other people are hopping aboard. I'm more than willing to continue working on the wiki, but I just didn't want to be the only person slogging it out. Now that there are other people putting some effort into it, I'm back in the driver's seat.

Well a wiki requires a large commitment from a lot of people and clearly 2 aren't enough.

However, a lot with just a few is a good step.

To give a hint of progress, please post new articles from this point on in this thread so we know what's being worked on and not.

http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Valenar
http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Argonnessen
http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Xen%27drik
http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Khyber
http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Erandis_D%27Vol

Those who check my entries will note they are hardly very detailed. This is true. I think the focus at this point should be getting down the basics right now and then expanding as we go on. I point out it took years for Wookieepedia to develop and we don't have Star Wars' fannbase.

Some general things to do about the wiki.

1. It's better to have tons of short entries than few really detailed ones.
2. Look for redlinks that already exist.
3. Remember <br>, [[]], and Headlines are the best command codes for a good article.

Let's see, I did a bunch of little things today mostly worked out some redirects and added a few more templates for things that are often repeated like the nations and regions of Khorvaire, Planes, etc.

while I can agree that it's good to get small blurbs on pages as a starting point there's also (in my opinion) not a lot of point in taking time to write a page that only has a few sentences, especially if that would represent basic or common knowledge. I realize not every page has to have a full-blown article detailing every piece of written canon for a particular place, person or event with a hundred links to other pages which then all have equally detailed descriptions, but if the wiki is to be a tool used by DMs to gather information to build better campaigns as well as to generate ideas for adventures then I think you're going to want a bit more of a description on the Aurum than just a bunch of shadowy merchants and a page reference. If that's what I get when I go to the wiki, then I'll turn to my books first, and the point of the wiki isn't to supplant the books, but to help people from having to flip through thirteen books looking for that "bit I saw in a sidebar about the dwarves who throw knives and shuriken." Given that Eberron sourcebooks lack indexes (with the exception of ECS and SCoT) it makes it doubly hard "was that dragonmarked enclave map in Five Nations, Dragonmarked or Player's Guide to Eberron?" With a wiki that contains more detailed information a player or DM can rely on going straight to the topic and getting more than just the bare bones, they can call up a source of information that gives them insight.

Definitely getting some basic text down for the massive amounts of unmade pages we still have is a good cause because lord knows there are a bunch of 'em. I'm just not sure a few sentences is what the wiki user is going to want.

RFrenchJr, you raise a good point.

I think it's important to recognize the primary purpose of a EberronWiki is to provide reference material for the Eberron gamers. One thing to remember is that not everyone is actually going to be an experienced Eberron player and they're actually not the target of an Eberron wiki. In general, the purpose of a wiki is someone to wonder "Who the hell is Zorlan D'Cannith" and then enter his name into the Wiki to find out Zorlan D'Cannith is the head of the Karrnath branch of House D'Cannith.

A Wikia is based around the idea of essentially being an encyclopedia for a specific topic. In this case, Eberron. For many things, there's actually NOT going to be more than a few sentences about a specific character. While you can write pages and pages about the Last War and Karrnath. What exactly are you going to write about Princess Haydith of Karrnath?

"Princess Haydith is the sister of Kaius III of Karrnath and currently living in Breland as part of an exchange of heirs."

That's pretty much all information that exists about them.

Now obviously, its important to contribute more information about the Devourer or whatever than "He's a member of the Dark Six" but better that we have "stubs" than nothing at all. It's important for readers to add on and when we have a community, we can make 'improvement drives.'

Thanks again for your contributions.

I fully support your point as well. I definitely would rather have two or three sentences on any topic then nothing written at all, and I would certainly rather have an entire wiki of two sentence entries then a wiki with three fully detailed pages. I just want to make sure that users and contributors know that we intend to do more with the wiki I say we because I'm committed to making the Eberron Wiki as good as it can be. I like doing the research and digging up as much about The Gatekeepers as I can because this project is as much a learning project for me as it is a dissemination of information for others. It is pretty easy to get bogged down with the trivial things, I mean I spent the better part of an hour tonight just posting redirects so that if you link elf, elves or elven it takes you to the same place and so on and so forth for all sorts of things. I've also opted to not post a particular page because I know it'll take a while to do it (Regions come to mind) rather than just post a quick blurb about the region and leave it to be edited later.

Oh I added Druidic Sects, and Dragonmarks and did some minor edits on the Planes of Eberron.

Noted, in any case, I'm going to work on trying to fill in the Organizations and deities for my current goals.

Then we'll move from there.

Also, I did Boranal's page.

Also, I did Boranal's page.
Are you going to add the 1001 facts about King Boranel? :evillaugh

I would contribute to the project, but at the time I'm writing this, I'm at work (naughty me) and at my leisure time I .. leisure. And I'm planning a game for next Sunday. Maybe after that I'm more able to add something. Not much, but something. I personally think exotic locations (such as Desolace and Ashtakala) need more attention.

I also try to pull other people into writing things. :P

I tend to imagine they take place below detailing the Dark Lanterns.

Just so people realize, the Wiki is almost completely underdeveloped.

We're not talking about needing tweaks and stuff. I'm saying MAJOR large portions of ESSENTIAL parts of the setting got NOTHING.

Added this article.

http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Dragons
http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/airship
http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Five_Nations
http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Aureon

I think http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Karrnath needs a lot more work but that's a long term project for me.

I must agree with Phipps, this is still a fledgling project and while we appreciate any contribution know that right now what we're really shooting for is hammering out the most major points. A good guideline, for now, is to only reference things in the ECS, I think that sums up the most essential points of Eberron. Once we've got the majority of content put up then we can begin the massive amounts of editing, formatting and other joyous wonders.

It would, however, be helpful if you can cite the page number on any article you add. There are Cite Book templates already made, and I'm pretty sure I covered all of the main sourcebooks so far with them. If you're not sure how to use the template search for Template:Cite book it'll show you how. If you reference a page and a book it'll help us when we DO get around to improving and editing that article to get to the exact place and go from there rather then poking around in the many books trying to find what you already found. Again, not as critical as just getting the information up there, but a point I'd like to make none-the-less.

Also Phipps, if you're going to do deities and organizations then I'll start working on nailing the locations and geography.

Got the Lhazaar Principalities banged out. *phew* I also made the Kingdom of Galifar page. That leaves just four regions not done for the nations and regions of Khorvaire. With any luck I'll get them all started by the end of the weekend.

Also somehow King Jarot got put in as Jarlot so I fixed that and added a bit more information on him.

08-26-07, 03:37 AM
Okay, got a page for all of the regions of Khorvaire, but I want to add some actual content to the Karrnath page and then I'll move on to Xen'Drik and some of the other continents of Eberron.

On a side note I wrote my first page that had multiple reference links that were all already done today :-D Progress is a beautiful thing.

Okay, have fun there with Karrnath.

I'll be doing the Sovereign Host this Sunday, hopefully.

Hi all! I'd love to contribute to this project as I'd love to have this as a reference for my own games.

But, I need some help getting started as I've never contributed to a Wiki before. Where do I begin? What topics do you recommend? Can I "add" to a topic?

Also, how far can we go in adding information without breaking any copyright laws?

Thanks.
Charles Phipps

You can add any information that doesn't repeat information from the books directly.

Also, no stats or rules.

Charles, I added two pages. Would you care to critique them and tell me what I did right and what I did wrong?

Here are the links:

Also, I've noticed that "Lyrandar" is being spelled wrong in a lot of places. On the Wiki it's spelled Lyrander in a lot of places. But, it's actually spelled Lyrandar.

I fixed the main entry, but couldn't figure out how to fix the "Dragonmarked Houses" box template.

Ok. I think I'm starting to get the hang of this. I haven't heard back from anyone yet on anything I've done, so I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong. So, please, let me know if I am so I can fix it in the future.

My username is "The Bard" on the site.

My next big project I'd like to get going is the City of Towers, Sharn. If anyone else is currently working on this, please lemme know so I don't waste my efforts.

Thanks!

Yeah, kudos to you my friend. I'm especially impressed at how well you followed the established formats into your new pages. For not knowing much about wikis you seem to have got it down. As far as tackling Sharn, have at it. I don't have SCoT so it'd be good for someone else to tackle it. Thanks for fixing that Lyrandar problem, I don't know why I thought it was Lyrander, *shrug* Right now Phipps and I are mostly focused on getting content on the wiki, rather than making sure its exhaustive and to a lesser extent formatted. While establishing the format will help with future edits, it's not as critical as just getting some information out there. If you start to get bogged down with Sharn, you can always just poke around and add whatever articles you see need to be added.

Currently, I'm working through the locations and Phipps is busting out the Sovereign Host, I'm guessing after that he'll probably move on to the Dark Six, but it's his call. I've gotten content pages up for each of the regions of Khorvaire, as well as Aerenal, Xen'Drik and Argonnessen. After I've got the big areas filled in I'm going to start hitting up the major cities. I've already started on ones like Passage and Fairhaven in Aundair. I'll, of course, leave you to tackle Sharn.

Also don't be afraid to insert your own personal content into the wiki. Although we want to try to give as much of the canoned information as we can, we also want the wiki to be a place where DMs can post their own insights on particular Eberron things. There is a template for entire articles that are User Creations (see the Scions Sound article for an example) but you don't have to put that bar in everytime you decide to inject a bit of your own flavor.

And if you're ever confused about wiki-coding you can either a) skip it and wait for someone else to edit it or b) check out the WikiMedia wiki, it's pretty useful and not too confusing.

Hey thanks for all the feedback. I see this as an invaluable tool and I'll try to add as much as possible. Sharn has definitely been an undertaking, but I've got some down if you wanna peruse. I have SCoT, so it's helped a lot.

I wasn't too sure if I was using the format correctly, I just tried to model it after what you guys had already accomplished.

I'd love to add some of my personal insight into the wiki once I get a bit more experience with it, I've noticed some of yours I think. They're good.

Thanks again guys and I'm happy to help.
