I've always considered the ease with which real-world events can be converted into adventures on of the strong points of Eberron. In that spirit, I'm posting a New York Times article, choosen largely at random, for discussion on how it could be turned into an Eberron adventure.

That one looks too easy, really. You sure you picked it at random?

It was second from the top when I went to the NYT page, and the first dealt with contentious political issues; a can of worms I'd rather not open here.

I really like your method here Meloncov. Do you also like to convert modern movies in to D&D adventures?

really, just grab the whole article and change names. every time they say Russia, say Zilargo, or Breland. Every time they say KGB, say Dark Lanturns or Silver Flame.

MAn, I just figured out how throw curve balls at my players ALL the time.

THANKS!

While that works, theirs still a leap from newspaper story to an actual adventure with challenges for the PCs.

Garner, in answer to your question, I steel adventure ideas from everything.

Easy. In the article, one guy mentions that he can't see how only one man was charged. The PCs are hired to identify and capture the other three.

Other three? Heck no, this is government conspiracy 101. Perfect news article to be in the Brelish Ledger, or some other paper in game. Change names and countries, make the killed or accused a person tied to the PCs, and then base your entire campaign around finding the true killer. This leads deep into the nether regions of conspiracy and in fighting between the countries, the D'marked houses, and the other power groups that could be involved like the Aurum and Trust.

Example:

The killed was a gnome that defected to sell off the "Bind Elemental" feat to the highest bidder. He was killed by an unknown person using similar means to the article. Suddenly, Zilargo has apprehended the assailant, but he surely had handlers higher up, and the Brelish want the killer extradited, as the deceased had been granted asylum by the Brelish some time ago, and was killed in Sharn right under their noses.

Now, the hook you ask? The PCs (Any level will do) were set to meet their patron, or hired to protect the man that died.

Too easy.

Overall, yes real world makes for fun things in game.
