Elemental Land Carts anyone? [Archive] - Wizards Community

On page 33 of the Explorer's Handbook there is a brief description of the elemental land cart--brief. There are three or so pages devoted to both the airship and the lightning rail--probably because of the James Bondsian nature they may provide.

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to deal with land carts, though?

For my game I have giving the character party a charm monster spell with permanency to control the earth elemental bonded to it. But the focus of the spell is for only one character. They can purchase additional scrolls for the price indicated in the DMG. Also, any bard that can cast 3rd level spells or wiz/sor that has access to 4th level can cast as well.

Being said, any other thoughts on this? I know it's not as high-speed as the airship, galleon or lightning rail, but it does provide a means to get some rather large antiquities from the interior of Xen'drick.

(The actual purchase/lease/rental of the cart has been an experience of itself . . . .)

Why not give them a ring of elemental control that's limited to work on just the elemental bound to the cart so that only the PC wearing the ring can drive the cart? I realize the "key ring" jokes are going to be coming fast and furious but that might work.

I really like these.

in the campaign that I run during the prologue the PCs and a cyran strike force went all Apocalpyse now on some Karrns in a raid.

About 6 of these things came curning over the horizon, rushed through the river and then started disgorging troops.

It was a very cool image.

No kidding--sorta Star Wars like. Great image.

I also like the ring idea . . . I think I am going to use that as an evolution of the process. I am "selling" the cart as an experimental vessel that the party is using.

Last night it got to use one of its special qualities . . . that the earth elemental bound to it can still use its slam attack at the behest of the pilot (if the pilot manages to control it to do so).

Thanks!

geez. eberron has everything. trains, planes, and automobiles!!

OOH!! I know! an artificer/vigilante with a land-cart prowls the streets of Sharn in his jet-black land-cart for criminals and wrong-doers, bringing them to justice.

isn't there a discription of one of these in the first adventure they published for Ebberon? I know that there are quite a few in Xen'drik (if you run around DDO...)

Probably, but I am not an online player (Army keeps me from it, mostly) and not a very prodigious buyer/player of published adventures, but, of course, I'll take a look.

But here is what I am using:

An experimental elemental-bound vessel of House Cannith, created under the guidance and direction of Jaxon d'Cannith at the House's enclave in Stormreach on Xen'drick. In addition to this elemental conestoga, the enclave offers various means of travel that are specifically designed for the rigors of exploring the unknow continent. Of course, with each of these vessels there is a substantial price. But, for a cut of the treasure, loot, and booty, Jaxon d'Cannith will work a deal . . .

The conestoga itself is 8 feet wide, 13 feet long, and stands about 5 feet high. It traverses the ground on 6 wheels, the axles to which are bound a rather young and spirited medium earth elemental. (The earth elemental has all the stats of a typical medium earth elemental found on page 97 of the Monster Manual with the exception that it has 47 hit points (maximum for its hit dice plus the Toughness feat) and an AC of 19 due to the nature of the wood from which the cart is constructed. The elemental loses the +1 to AC if it is ever let unbound.) Other stats are below:

Speed: 40 feet per turn; 25 miles per day sustained travel
Hadrness: cart 8; canvas 2
Hit points: cart 60; canvas 10

The cart is under two enchantments that assist in the control of the elemental. The first is a charm monster spell cast by Jaxon d'Cannith through the "pilot" of the vessel. There can be only one character to actually control the elemental at any given time. The second is a permanency spell cast on top of the charm monster to lengthen the time of the enchantment. There is a second set of scrolls provided with the conestoga in case the original pilot is slain or otherwise unable to control the vessel.
Each day the elemental is entitled to a saving throw to determine whether or not it will do as it is bid. The Will save DC is 17. If the elemental fails the saving throw it will do as it is bid as per the description of the charm monster spell. If the elemental succeeds on the saving throw, there is a chance that the elemental will continue. (Roll d6; if the result is 1-5 the elemental will act as though it had failed its saving throw; if the result is a 6 the elemental will react in an irrational way for the entire 24 hours until the next saving throw, 24 hours later.)
The elemental can use its slam attack to adjacent foes on the turn of the pilot. The pilot can control the elemental as a free action on that character's turn in the initiative.
In all other respects the conestoga moves as an elemental land cart as described in the Explorer's Handbook on page 33.
Additional items on the cart: 10 foot ladder, small push cart (200#), 300 feet of hemp rope (good quality), 2 small chests (200 gold piece max), set of scrolls (charm monster, permanency)
