| Hannonac10-23-06, 12:05 AM | Okay, one of my players tells me his Artificer can use his special metamagic feat on an Eternal Wand, basically trading charges to enlarge, empower, etc. The wand works twice per day if I remember correctly and is not based on charges. So how does this work out? And, more importantly, where is it written out in the rules? |

So how does this work out? And, more importantly, where is it written out in the rules? You nailed it right off the bat. Eternal Wands have uses per day which are distinct and separate from charges. Its right in the Eternal Wand description in the ECS. |
| Hannonac10-23-06, 08:30 AM | That is what I thought, but I was not sure if maybe I missed something. |
| Tyryt10-23-06, 06:47 PM | Actually, I had the same question about how those feats/abilities that use extra charges (such as duel wand wielder) affect Eternal wands. In the end, I decided that they didn't. If this is completely unacceptable to a player, you could rule that while they can use such a feat or ability on an Eternal wand, they need to wait until those used charges have "recharged". For example, if they had an eternal wand and used 4 charges by way of enhancing it, it would be inert for 2 days until it could be used again. You could also, reasonably, extend this to an extra day per charge that isn't there. RAW, it's iffy, since they don't say whether they do or do not work on Eternal Wands, though if you want to get real technical, EWs are not wands, they are Eternal Wands, so won't work at all. Your the GM, make a descision and stick by it, just make sure it's got some reason and not just an arbitrary judgement. :) |
| Elderich10-28-06, 11:00 AM | Eternal Wands have the language "uses per day", but just have easily had the language "charges per day." A DM could go either way, without much difference. An artificer CANNOT use 4 charges from an item with only 2 charges left, even if the charges will refresh in a day. The artificer would have to "power surge" the item. So Even if you allow the eternal wand to have "charges" instead of uses, and artificer may only apply a total of +1 SL adjustment to wand without power surging. |
| aelryinth10-29-06, 06:57 PM | Eternal Wands make fine buffing devices, however, especially since an artificer of median levels can apply Metamagic Item to them to enhance the spells they deliver. A single wand investment, and no worrying about charges ever again. ===Aelryinth |
| Elderich10-30-06, 11:51 AM | But only if the DM rules that the item has "charges" and not "uses per day" |
| ArcTan10-31-06, 12:37 PM | Metamagic Item, the infusion, doesn't use up charges; it just uses up that infusion. That's why it's so good. |
| Elderich10-31-06, 01:46 PM | My point is that MMI requires an item WITH CHARGES, as does the MMST ability. Technicaly a Ewand does not have charges, so is not a valid target. |
