aside from the core books, XPH, and all the eberron books i use the follwing in my eberron game:

magic of incarnum

savage species

races of destiny

races of eberron

races of stone

races of the wild

complete adventurer

complete arcane

complete divine

complete warrior

arms and equipment guide

stronghold builders guide book

heroes of battle

heroes of horror

dragonlance campaign setting

ghostwalk

oriental adventures

manual of the planes

planar handbook

book of exalted deeds

book of vile darkness

epic level handbook

deities and demigods

monster manual 2

monster manual 3

feind folio

draconomicon

libris mortis

lords of madness

frostburn

sandstorm

stormwrack

dungeon masters guide 2

weapons of legacy

call of cthulhu

so far im sticking to WotC books only, and yes all these books have a use in my game. could go on about how each of these books finds a use but i would be at it all day, but aside from that having a wealth of material to use in my game adds depth to it and eberron that much more richer a setting.

How do you work the Oriental Adventures into the game? Just a little info would be nice.

Bits and pieces of anything can be worked into Eberron quite easily, but putting everything in lock stock and barrel doesn't really work.

But thats true of any setting.

The only things I dislike adding to Eberron are campaign specific material like Dragon Lance, and mechanically unappealing material (things I simply don't like in any setting) like magic of Incarnum.

That said sometimes too much is a bad thing. I use the XPH, heroes of horror, complete warrior, complete arcane, complate divine, and complete warrior, pretty much as the only outside source material. Adding more just makes things a jumbled mess.

i use the oriental culture for the goblinoids, i use samurai as champions of royalty rather than paladins as they bound to a lord rather than a moral code but still have a strong ethical standing. a paladin and a samurai recive an assignment form thier king to lead an assult on a orc village, the paladin asks "is this the right thing to do?" and the samurai responds "you dishonor our lord by your questioning".

i use taint for the mournland (updated by heroes of horror) and use the shadowlands oni as mournland horrors, blood magic is tied to the blood of vol and tainted warriors and socerers make for great high ranking members of the emerald claw.

Now thats some great stuff, thanks for the info.

for other settings like DL i use the manual of the planes option that the plane of shadow connects material planes together so there is the possiblity that characters from kryn, oreth, and toril (but os we've only used DL as no one else has FR or GH books) can be in eberron but its extreamly rare (under my discresion only), i use ghostwalk for manifest zones for the realm of the dead, in fact i use the city of manifest must like sharn where its planar connection makes things possible that arn't else where.

oh and why does everyone hate MoI?

Two people hardly count as everyone. I am rather fond of the book myself.

i've seen whole threads that bash MoI and the eberron magic board there is a thread on adapting MoI to eberron and half the posts (not counting mine defending the poor book) are all about how horrible it is.
how ever here is my take on incarnum in eberron

Call of Cthulhu shouldn't be at all hard to add in. This opinion is based on having read a good bit of lovecraft, not from any familiarity with the gaming product, though. But the idea of ancient Secrets Man Was Not Meant to Know in the ocean depths or deep inside Khyber feels perfect for the settings.

well specificly i use only the d20 CoC not any of the chaosium stuff as conversion would be to much hassle and i'm lazy as well

Domesticated and raised by giants as bite-sized snacks. :D

Out of total curiosity, how do you fit kender into Eberron?Livestock in Argonessa? Them dragons gotta eat something, after all, and god knows the Kender only survive as a people through the DM's good graces... :D

as i disallow alot of the DL races that are done better in standard D&D ie. all the DL elf subraces, the dwarven subraces execpt for the gully dwarves and dark dwarves (i use them as non psionic gray dwarves), and the kender, i find them unbalanced and in the case of the kender they annoying at best, dragon foder at worst, seriously the best use for a kender is when you come across something that is obviously traped tell them there is something shiny in it and wait for the boom. (we did this once our dwarf player told the kender that there was something shiny at the end of a hallway which his stone expertise told him was off, and since the dwarf has darkvision he belived him and away he went, everyone had a laugh as he was crushed to death under a collapse, after that we added a kender npc that died every campaign like kenny from south park :D)

but i mainly use DL the two dwarf races, krynn minotaurs and various kewl stuff in the book like monsters and magic

They were created by giants, like the drows, but where drows where meant to be assasinsa dn elves where slaves, kenders where made to be pets for young giants. Think to them like the Giants equivalent of intelligent, humanoid kittens.

I use the Complete series, XPH, Libris Mortis and Dragonomicon. I'd add in something from the location series (Stormwrack, Frostburn, etc) if a player requested it and it made sense.

I do not use any of the other settings' books. They just don't feel right to me for Eberron.

Many of the books you mentioned I don't have (Cuthulu, MoI, Oriental Adventures), but I can see how some of those would work well.

I use the complete book without too much in the way of oversight. I've given a looksover of the Races book and the only that goes in full tilt is RoE. I play with all the monster manuals though that doesn't affect Player choices all that much. I use the miniature's handbook for some base and prestige classes (not often though). I can't get ahold of an incarnum book and from my skim through they don't really seem like something on which I would spend money. I'll probably buy Spell Compendium and after a thorogh examination allow that which doesn't break the game (my players aren't the best min/maxers in the world so its not that much of an issue anyway)

with the varied locales in eberron the location books are a good buy, frostburn = frostfell, sandstorm = blade desert, stormwrack= thunder sea/sea of rage/seren sea... you get the idea, anyway these books add more depth to exotic sites then what is offered in the DMG and after getting stormwrack i can't imagine doing a lhazaar/lyrandar adventure with out it.

I definetly avoid adding campaing specific material to any game. Short of the Noble and the Mariner classes in the DLCS and AoM books, I would never dream of adding something from Dragonlance itself, much to the dissapointment of the players who really want a Dragonlance so they can hunt dragons on Eberron.

For a homebrew it is something different entirely, since you are creating the feel of the world yourself, but with something as specific as Eberron, no way.

i would feel a great swell of pity for anyone foolish enough to bring a dragonlance to eberron, sure the elves and lords of dust would give anything to have it, but the dragons would be relentless in thier persuit of it and who ever posseses it and and the only thing left of him and the lance would a overpowering aura of evocation and maby some ash blowing in the wind

Out of that list you gave, Stormwrack is about the only one that I wouldn't use. Personally, I prefer using Seas of Blood, by Mongoose Publishing. It has a much simpler stat system that makes ship-to-ship combat feel more fast paced and easier to run. Seriously, if you're doing anything on the high seas, I recommend you check it out. Use the maps for the ships from Stormwrack, though. Seas of Blood only shows the upper decks.

i have an incredibly tough time using/buying/reading or even looking at 3rd party material, this started after i bought the B5 setting book by mongoose, i ended up giving it to a to buddy of mine that liked B5 too, like me he gaged on the waves of pure stupid the emenated from that pathetic tome. but time went on and i got over it and picked up dragonmech, it looked cool, read cool, it almost screamed cool, but when i read it all that "cool" amouted to a big pile of meh. i've browsed through arcana unearthed and wasn't impressed, i don't consider myself a D&D pureist but so many of the 3rd party books out there seem to slapshot on rules with out considering how they effect how the D&D already works, for example a player in my game brought in this 3rd party "complete drow" waste of paper, omg it was so broken that it made playing elminster, drizzit, and co. through a 1st level adventure seem reasonable.

I agree with Wolfen on this one. I have stuck to WoTC books because they are properly geared to D&D while the third party books are horible, so that I have seen. Now, there are times when WoTC puts out a book so bad that there is no way in the nine hells I would ever use it (for me, Libris Mortis comes to mind). In the long run, unless you are willing to repair the mess that people like Mongoose make, I would stear clear of the 3rd party books.
Uller999

if you're careful with how they are applied than some of the mongoose material has been excellent. I particularlly liked the book for psychic warriors. It had a lot of fluff that made psychich warriors terrifying and enough crunch to get people to play them.
Wolfen Fenrison

12-30-05, 05:26 PM
fluff is easy, anyone with enough imagination and storytelling skill can make fluff, for most of the LA 0 races in the MMs i had to make fluff. but crunch is most problems lay, any crunch problems in any WotC book are easy enough to fix they are almost self correcting (unless its core its optional) most 3rd party swill is the product of someone saying "hay this kewl lets make a book on it" and they consider weither it is a good idea or if it has been done by someone else, for example sea faring rules have in 3rd ed D&D since the arms and equipment guide which got a 3.5 treatment in the explorers handbook and stormwrack, there is no need to make 3rd party books on it except for ego, all poorly made and even more poorly writen books would be better served as online pdf. or submisions to magazines or e-zines. now execption should be made for some of monte cooks stuff but after he thought he do a game solo that is better than D&D that turned me off him.

oh and why does everyone hate MoI?

Magic of Incarnum is great, it easily fits into anything and it is very flexible. Together with Heroes of Horror I think it's some of the best stuff that came out since the release of the ECS.

I mix in a lot of stuff as well although I always try to keep the main players of the setting the main players of the setting, so not introducing new all powerfull villians or good guys let alone Gods or Titans (Scarred Lands).

I use WOTC dnd books together with

- Green Ronin Plublishing books (Book of Fiends I and II are very nice, School of Necromany, Vampires Handbook, Freeport stuff...)
- AEG d20 books which are very good supplements. I have them all.
- Legends and Lairs which offer some of the best material out there.
- My brother also likes the Midnight Campaign setting and he uses stuff from that together with a tad of Iron Kingdoms. He managed to blend things perfectly up till now.
- I love books by Raymond E Feist and use a mix of his world into Eberron. Some of his stuff just fits perfectly like the Valheru being the ancient powerfull Giants of Xendrik. He also offers some great adventuring inspiration.
