This is a really newby question. It is just that I am having a problem with a DM who also plays in a game I DM about experience. Another player who has DM'd disagreed slightly and had a third opinion. I posted some info concerning his adventure and got conflicting views on how to handle standard XP for just a basic fight. But that is all just background.

My question is concerning how to give out XP for the published adventures:
Do I give out the XP for an encounter as if the EL were equivalent to the CR for an encounter?
Example: EL 3rd encounter for 2nd level characters
Does that mean the characters recieve 900 party XP for the encounter? <As per the chart on p. 38 DMG.>

Do I do the same things for the roleplaying encounters?

Or do I try to Ad Hoc them and then add up the CR's involved with the creatures that the party is fighting?

I'm pretty sure (though not at all positive) that EL is used as a gauge of difficult an encounter is. The DMG talks about orc air corp versus orc spear corp. They're still orc warriors which are CR 1/2 (or maybe 1) but obviously the orc bombadiers are more challenging than the run em and stick em orcs. So you treat the orcs as having a high encouter diffulty. That being established they way I do is if I have an EL in front of me I just use that like a CR and than do ad-hoc awards as warranted. The same goes for traps, role-playing, etc. For me it usually has more to do with accomplishing objectives with role-playing as a bonus. So to answer your question yeah I'd treat ELs as a CR and calculate accordingly. I've been doing it that way for years and have never had problems. You may want to ask in another message board as you might get more accurate questions by applying this to a larger audience. hope this helped
