Explain: Sentinel Marshals [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-16-05, 05:35 AM In the Eberron campaign setting there's many mentionings of the Sentinel Marshals especially one particular line on page 232 ... "the Sentinel Marshals who, by ancient decree, provide law and order across national boundries" ...

Is this to say that the individual kingdoms do not protect their borders with their own troops? Or that house Denieth and the Sentinel Marshals are the traditional defenders of the Khorvaire? (hence by ancient decree) It's almost led me to believe that House Denieth remains entirely neutral by only providing protection.

Any thoughts or some insight to the nature of the Sentinel Marshals?

Well, they're also a Dragonmarked House, so they're kind of like the FBI as a trans-national corporation with a near-monopoly on cross-border law enforcement (remember that, say, a Citadel agent can probably get away with killing someone with absolutely no consequences in Aundair or Zilargo, however).

Or like Interpol if Interpol was also a corporate/family entity that the various governments of Europe just sort of hired to do its job hundreds of years ago.

Actually the most acurate portrayal of the sentinel Marshals is more liken to the Federal U.S. Marshals service. These agents are responsible hunting down fugitives.U.S.Marshals (http://www.usmarshals.gov/duties/index.html) Quoting the page; The Marshals Service has been designated by the Department of Justice as the primary agency to apprehend fugitives that are wanted by foreign nations and believed to be in the United States. Fugitive apprehension efforts have expanded abroad with Marshals Service offices in Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. Also, the Marshals Service is the primary agency responsible for tracking and extraditing fugitives who are apprehended in foreign countries and wanted for prosecution in the United States.

The FBI is primarily an investigative agency, investigating crimes at the federal level. They can and do make arrests but can technically it's not there job to hunt down and arreset wanted fugitives.F.B.I. (http://www.fbi.gov/priorities/priorities.htm)

Interpols' funtion is primarily a way to facilitate organization and cooperation between international law enforcemnet agencies. They are only servicable by member organizations though and requests by those members for help. Their jurisdiction is limited by that. They also serve as a large database of information relavent to international investigations. As near as I can tell they don't really physically hunt down fugitives for capture but investigate their whereabouts and collect information relative to investigations for other entities. You might also think of the Sentinal Marshals as the Khorvaire equivalent of the old west U.S. Marshals or Texas Rangers. Rugged rough and tumble trackers, bent on serving justice. I have a PC that is a Sentinal marshal. I play him like an old west version of Judge Dredd. All that matters to him is the law and catching his prey. He does not care what the fugitive did, it's his goal to bring them in. Dead or Alive. You also might pick up or rent a copy of The Fugitive movie. Tommy Lee Jones plays a U.S. Marshal.

Anywho, That's my 2 cents. hope it can be useful :)
