I was thinking about the possible mass wartime use of various spells and it occured to me that one could use the feather fall spell to pull off HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) drops from airships, as well as many similar uses. Any thoughts on the potential of this? For example, it could serve as a fun way to start an adventure in the heart of dangerous territory, or give a villian a clever way to escape from the PCs while in a place like Sharn.

they would have to have a magic item that they could activate a few rounds before hitting the ground, but other than that it sounds like a blast! I am hoping to have some sort of combat like that. Just grappling in free fall and pounding the crap out of each other hoping to kill (knock out) the other one and snag the potion of freefall before hitting the ground.

...

Through Sharn. ... Reflex rolls to try and avoid slamming into the bridges on the way down. You roll a couple of rounds in advance to see if they can manage to veer to one side or the other. Spot rolls to see if they notice a bridge rushing up at them to begin with. Oh yeah... this will be used.

I added mages who wait around the middle levels of the city looking for people who are falling. When they see someone falling they leap over and will cast feather fall on the victim for HUGE fees! Since it takes a while to fall from such a height, the mages may even haggle!

But I think most people would pay whatever the fee was just to live!

Hehehehe

An item I'm giving to all airship passengers is a magic 'life belt'. It's a bright orange sash, flexible enough to fit over armour or any other items, which is enchanted with a special version of featherfall. It kicks in automatically if you fall more than ten feet, and remains active until touchdown if you come down on land - but if you fall onto water, it stays active for 12 hours, keeping you buoyant enough that most of you floats on top of the water. Passengers are required to wear it whenever they're on deck.

So

How much would it cost to make a single use featherfall token that would activate if you fell more than 10ft and remain active until you landed and which didn't need any special skills to activate. You just carry it on your person and when its needed it triggers.

With artificers around, i can't imagine it would take much so you could probably mass produce them. One shot parachutes, chuck a load of soldiers out of the airship with these in hand and instant paratroopers

Isnt there something similar to this in the Complete Warrior (not the item, but the concept)?

Me, I see two versions: a 1-charge and a 1/day that uses the extended version of the spell. Both can be activated manuallly but also automatically activate if you're moving down faster than 50ft./round and there is ground directly below and within range of the spell (thus working even if the wearer is unconcious or unable to see the gorund due to fog). The lesser version might be a cool thing for everyone in the party to have as a precaution.

Edit: Oh, and keep in mind this has to be the coolest way to introduce surprise reinforcements ever. Especially when it's something like 3 warforged titans.

Id do something like: Life belt, requires contingicy, extend, featherfall, <i can't do prices for crap>.

lol or for mass retreats a widened reverse gravity, boy would that be a sight: all the warforged titans, carcass craps, and soldiers being flung into the air all of a sudden :mymy:

Very good idea. I think they'd be too expensive to mass-produce and give to all passengers or soldiers, but giving them to a small elite strike force (the party? :P) is pretty cool.

8000 gp for an always on featherfall
400 gp for a 1/day 1/round have to be consciouse to use featherfall
40 gp for a 1/charge 1/round have to be consciouse to use featherfall

Contingency would make the 8k one look cheap.

First off, thanks. That having been said, are you sure about the contingency effect upping the cost like that? I mean, I personally handle it by doing something like upping the level of the spell by one for the purpose of costs.

This is very expensive, considering that a Ring of Feather Falling always works and just costs 2200 GP.

The current Feather Fall spell can affect one creature per level, but that doesn't seem to be too helpful. Something like a Mass Feather Fall that worked on all creatures in a given radius would be better for parachute-style military attacks.

Another option is troll drops. Since trolls only take subdual damage from falls, you could just huck trolls out of an airship from any height to any place you like and let their regeneration take care of the mess at the bottom.

Eeexcellent. I can just picture PCs mystified by the sudden splatting forms, then suddenly realizing their predicament when the bits stat to reform .
