I have attempted to search this topic but it seems to have no answer.

I am Co-DMing a campaign and the PCs hijacked a small shipment of Khyber dragonshards. I didnt write this section of the campaign but my partner is off on business and out of touch. What the heck are they worth?? I cannot seem to find any monetary values associated with dragonshards. I did see one poster ask a similar question, but the only answer he got was "It depends on size, amount, blah blah...". I ended up just stating the PCs were able to get 40,000 gp for fourty 5 lb. shards. Is there no official answer?

Well, personally, I have no clue what the worth is... however I will say that I believe ANY large shipment of Dragonshards should be under LOTS of scrutiny... personally, if I were you and the DM, I'd start having organizations look for where the sale was made, by whom, how much they got, what they bought, in an attempt to track the players and shards down (maybe by a Master Inquisitor) , and slay the players.

Sorry I couldn't answer your question with a GP value, but I figure I might as well loan you a suggestion.

I'd say 'whatever a fair reward for the trouble the PCs went through to get them'.
Maybe more if they are going to have trouble selling them (eg the original owner tries to track them down.)

No, there's no official answer except "it varies a lot, by both size and quality". Basically, dragonshards seem to cost what you need them to cost, which is fine for the Eberron shards, whose value is considered to be part of magic item creation costs, but more awkward for Khyber and Siberys shards. Your guesstimate seems about as reasonable as anything.

Indeed, the price depends on the size, purity and type of shard. The best rule would be that an eberron dragonshard costs about as much as a diamond. Double the prize for a Khyber dragonshard, triple for siberys. The price also doubles when not in Khorvaire.

So a large shipment of dragonshards can easily make you a rich man, but beware, it is also an invitation for trouble. Players are wise to keep such large captures secret, seeing every house and everyone who is somebody will try to rob them, including several dangerous opponents like the Lords of Dust and the Inspired (especially with Eberron dragon shards).

My advice for your players is to not fence them all at once; only fence in small amounts. Spread it out. While a connection may still be found (especially by a good inquisitive) it raises a lot less suspicion than someone selling a whole load of 'shards.
