This something I have been working on for a while now. It was inspired by a great anime called Full Metal Alchemist please look it over and tell your thoughts. Keep in mind this only the first part dealing with history and creation of Ficermail, I will post the stats and mechanics later this week.

Thanks Sagesai

Ficermail

Ficermail- A type of prosthetic limb designed by a Gnome artificer during the second half of the last war to replace the lost arms and legs of solders during combat.

History: In the year 960yk the hundred year war has raged across the lands of Khorvaire for 66 years bloodshed and attrition have claimed lives of countless solders and civilians alike. Lots of the wars wounded have suffered grievous wounds such as loss of a limb due to unavailable healing or combat wounds that took their arm or leg. The armies’ commanders are losing the war to attrition so they explore new ways of repairing and healing their solders, all attempts fail.

Until one young artificer discovers the key that might get the wounded back in the fight. The gnome artificer who name is Lassius Aylre, working with a dwarven blacksmith Lassius develops an arm made out steel that will function as an arm with a working hand. The first arm is heavy and it takes the work of a cleric, artificer, and wizard to attach and bring the arm to life, even with the complex surgery the limb functions as normal. Success the dragonmarked houses and nobles alike order Lassius and his team to further develop what the young artificer has dubbed Ficermail.

Five years pass as the war continues its bloody swath through the land and Lassius and his team develop lighter more functional limbs including the ability to replace legs. Even with new techniques and designs the Ficermail takes time to fabricate so only the army’s best troops receive the replacements to continue the fight. Behind the militaries back Lassius begins to offer his Ficermail to the public and a few truly needy souls that have begin touched by the war’s thirst for more carnage.

In the year 961 House Cannith brings forth the warforged causing the need for Ficermail to decrease as a military application however Artificer Aylre continues his research with the aim of helping those who can not afford the high cost magical healing to heal the damage left by the hundred year war. The next 35 years pass for Lassius and his team with study work developing the limbs to be cost effective and functionally sound, new innovations such as being able to craft the limbs from mithral and even adamantine for those who can pay the costs. Lassius Aylre develops his Ficermail into a small empire in Zilargo where he and his hand picked artificers continue their work to this day.

didn't think that I would finish it this so quickly but here is the rest of the ficermail. Please let me know what you all think, feedback fuels the fires of creation and it is greatly appricated. So without further adu Ficermail part 2.

Mechanics and style: Ficermail is an alternative for characters that have been through some very tough trails as an adventure and lost an arm or leg for one reason or another. (I.e. combat wounds disease, animal attack, or whatever: Ficermail gives you an option to continue playing that character with a replacement limb made from a variety of materials.

Step one in getting a piece of Ficermail look at the cost to your character, and these will be high the reason is because Ficermail is replacing an integral part of your body adding a new limb is not a lightly or temporary decision.

The pros
1. The Ficermail limb is a normal functioning replacement for a lost arm or leg.

2. If used as a melee weapon the limp will deal 1d4+Str. Mod of real damage.

3. The limb can be enchanted with spells to give the limb special traits, like bulls strength or the burning weapon ability. Enchanting the limb is just like enchanting a weapon or armor for the purpose of figuring your costs.

4. It adds a unique spin to your character considering Ficermail is still considered rare and it is not something every character is going to want.

The cons
1. A Ficermail limb is a permanent replacement for the lost body part.

2. Your character will receive a minus 2 to his/her con stat permanently due to the trauma of the attachment process this is the standard penalty.

3. Arcane spell failure for Arcane magic users based on the type of materials used for the limb.

4. Other penalties can be imposed by your gm as he or she sees fit.

The Ficermail

Standard steel or iron mail: This is the standard and most affordable piece mail one can get, this mail is an artificed limb that functions as any normal limb would. It has no additional benefits or drawbacks and can be enchanted as normal.
Cost: 250 gp for half arm 500 gp for full arm 325 gp for half leg 650 gp for full leg

The Mithral Ficermail: This limb is crafted from fine mithral metal making it lighter and more durable than the steel mail. Enchanting functions as normal. These rare pieces due to the cost and the rare mithral materiel need to create this Ficermail. The Mithral will provide a +2 shield bonus in melee combat when the arm is the limb replaced.
Cost: 500 gp for half arm 1,100 gp for full arm 600 for half leg 1,200 for full leg

Adamantine Ficermail: This mail is the rarest mail created because Adamantine is very rare and very costly to use. This Ficermail provides a +4 shield bonus in melee combat and will deal a 1d6 real damage instead of the standard 1d4. The reason for this is because this mail is like having a small warhammer for an arm and fist. The drawbacks are this; the arm will cause a -2 skill check penalty to any skills that require fine manual dexterity. Enchanting functions as normal.
Cost: 1,000 gp for half arm 2,000 gp for full arm 1,500 for half leg 3,000 for full leg

* Half arm is considered from the elbow down to the fingers, Full Arm is considered from the Shoulder to the fingers. Half leg is considered from the knee to the toes, and Full Leg is considered from the hip down to the toes.

**Shield bonuses only apply to full arm replacements

Arcane Spell Failure half arm full arm
Steel or iron 10% 15%
Mithral 5% 10%
Adamantine 15% 30%
• Double the Arcane Spell Failure if both arms are replaced

Author’s Note- Ficermail is something you can use or not, it is meant to provide a new option for character design and concept. By all means feel free to change and adapt it to you games and have fun with the possibilities it brings to the amazing world of Eberron.

Thanks,
Sagesai
