| ThanisKartaleon12-06-04, 03:45 PM | Another in the Video Game Plots in Eberron (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=4945478) series... Final Fantasy: Tactics in Eberron This thread is for discussing how to fit the various plot elements from Final Fantasy: Tactics into Eberron. Not necessarily the mechanics of Bombs, or how the party gets access to Teleport2.... Fluff before crunch. Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX): Hehe... a nice fit. The War has just ended, exhausting the people's strength and the country's resources. (Breland I'm thinking? Read p144.) Brigands and thieves prowl unstopped. One of the princesses gets abducted - let's say the eldest. Boranel gets sick with worry -- so sick, in fact, that he may die. The noble lords immediately convene, believing that Boranel's children are not fit to rule. They back Lord Goltana, the Black Lion. Lord Ruken ir'Clarn steps up and seizes control of the Parliament, under his banner, the White Lion. Stuck in the middle is the party. In addition, this would be great for using the different star signs (aka Dragonmarks, see page 130) Geez... this is a really good fit. |
| Neofish12-06-04, 04:55 PM | The Divine Knights are most likely spellswords. The 2 waring factions could easily be any 2 nations, most likly Karnnath and Thrane. the Marquis''s faction would be Aundair. I would use T.G. Cid as a very decrorated veteren. the Death Corps. could be from Cyre. |
| Shas'O12-06-04, 11:18 PM | Argh, my weakness, my favorite game ever, first of all, the basics. *SPOILERS ARE AHEAD* First of all, the Globados church can easily be the Silver flame, as the churches higher ups were mostly greedy and knew the truth of the religion. But I am not so sure about the beginning of the flame, as it doesn't fit anywhere with St. ajora. The Holy stones are obviously Khyber shards with very strong demons in each of them, perhaps those most closest to khyber. Most Holy knights are probably fighters with a couple levels of cleric/mage, and Spellsword/eldritch knight, or cleric. There was an advanced civiliation that had airships, guns, and Worker robots, which could obviously be Warforged. I'll think of more better ideas tomorrow, im tired. |
| Ramses III12-07-04, 12:39 AM | OMG, I love it! :inlove: The main reason why I love the Spellsword prestige class is I would always have a maxed-out wizard (Black Mage)/knight in my party in FF Tactics. The analog with the Church is great, with the way clerics work in Eberron. And the whole deal with the war! Excellent! The older brother -- Lysander maybe? the one that's not Zalbag -- would clearly be an eldritch knight. And Mustadio and his father Artificers! I honestly don't think guns could hurt the setting either. One could resurrect the Numbers spells from the 2e Tome of Magic for the Calculators, and the Mediator is an obvious Bard PrC. Maybe give it an extraordinary dominate ability, among other things. For a while I was thinking about doing a D20 adaptation of FF Tactics, especially the class system -- Eberron would be an excellent setting for it! :ayyyy!: |
| ThanisKartaleon12-07-04, 04:38 AM | I honestly don't think guns could hurt the setting either. Eh, probably not. But eternal wands and wands in general would be more kosher. |
| ThanisKartaleon12-07-04, 05:29 AM | From SquareUniverse.net (http://www.squareuniverse.net/): Gallionne is a kingdom that has been in a constant up and down battle for peace.* Gallionne used to be part of a larger country known as Ivalice, along with Zeltennia.* Ivalice was involved in a huge war with invaders from the north from Romando, in which bloody battles were fought between the two kingdoms (although the war started between Ivalice and Ordallia over a small kingdom between the two). The war eventually ended after 50 years (hence the name of the war, the 50 Year War), but further internal strife led the two major ruling families to begin to feud.* The King of Ivalice died suddenly, and no rightful heir was available, except for his recently new born son.* The two major families of Gallionne and Zeltennia both claimed rights to the throne, and the mysterious kidnap of Princess Ovelia led to the beginning of what is now called the Lion War.* A man, named Delita Hyral, rose above the conflict and unified the country once again.* Delita has since recently died, and new evidence came out of the cracks that Delita was not the hero he seemed to be, and he was actually a manipulator and was said to have even caused the Lion War. Larg called the accusations heresy, while Goltana saw some merit in the new stories.* This once again has caused a great divide between the families, and the families split once again. Gallionne gained support from three of the four remaining ruling families of Ivalice, including the families of Fovoham, Lesalia, and the remainder of Lionel’s territory (the ruler of Lionel gave most all of his land to the Church after almost his entire family died in the Lion War.* The Church has henceforth named its accumulated ceded territory after the family and their highest generosity).* Limberry sided with Zeltennia, and now it seems like the family split has probably divided Ivalice permanently.* The citizens of Gallionne, like the King and government, hold strong ties with the Church.* This has led to a very religious population, and a quite a few men and women donate their lives to serving in the Church priesthood. Citizens of Gallionne hold a very concrete view about the world, and are incredibly conservative in their views.* The constant wars have also led the population to loath combat, and although Gallionne has a few bitter enemies, they much rather stay where they are and rebuild rather than go to war again. A few alterations, and you get my idea: Breland is a nation that has been in a constant up and down battle for peace. Breland used to be part of a larger kingdom known as Galifar, along with Karrnath, Cyre, Aundair, and Thrane. Galifar was involved in a huge civil war between the various heirs (although the conflict was started by Breland's Queen in order to prevent cataclysm). The war eventually ended after 102 years (the people, thinking this would be the last war on Eberron, named it the Last War), leaving the kingdom fractured into many nations. In Breland, internal conflict continued, as both parliament and a secret group of noble lords did not wish the monarchy to continue. The King of Breland died suddenly, and though a rightful heir was available, his claim to the throne was denied. The two major families of ir'Clarn and ir'Goltana both claimed rights to the throne, and the mysterious kidnap of Princess Ovelia led to the beginning of what is now called the Bear War. A man named Delita Hyral, rose above the conflict and unified the country once again. Delita has since recently died, and new evidence came out of the cracks that Delita was not the hero he seemed to be, and he was actually a manipulator and was said to have even caused the Bear War. Lord Ruken ir'Clarn called the accusations heresy, while Lord Druksmald ir'Goltana saw some merit in the new stories. This once again has caused a great divide between the families, and the families split once again. Ruken gained support from two of the three other remaining nations of Galifar, including the families of Karrnath and Thrane (Thrane is currently controlled by the Church of the Silver Flame). Aundair has sided with ir'Goltana, and now it seems like the family split has probably divided Galifar permanently. The constant wars have led the population to loath combat, and although Breland has a few bitter enemies, they much rather stay where they are and rebuild rather than go to war again. |
| ThanisKartaleon12-11-04, 09:58 AM | okay, well here's some more as a "bump" of sorts. This is a Khorvaire-wide idea for a Tactics-inspired campaign, starting the party off as graduates of Rekkenmark military academy (different idea than my last post): (which do you think fits better, set wholly in Breland or across the entirety of Khorvaire? and would you use this as an adventure path or a campaign event? (by which I mean would the PCs be actively involved in these events or would they serve to fill in the world around them?)) I'll put more later, but those of you who've played the game should get the gist of why I put what where... or something like that. I hope. Anyway, it's 7 am and I haven't slept yet, so off I go! oh, and btw this is a great excuse to break out those "riding birds" from Dragon issue #323... | Neofish12-11-04, 07:22 PM | I think you got most of them pretty well, save for 2 I see. First, no way Warjil's is Woart. Second, Lesalia should be Thronehold. Other than that, pretty good. DO you play on stating out the Holy Knights.? What about T.G. Cid or Gafgarion.? |
| ThanisKartaleon12-12-04, 02:54 AM | I think you got most of them pretty well, save for 2 I see. First, no way Warjil's is Woart. Second, Lesalia should be Thronehold. Other than that, pretty good. DO you play on stating out the Holy Knights.? What about T.G. Cid or Gafgarion.? ok, if not Wroat... Starilaskur? Yeah, Lesalia should be Thronehold. Which would make Orbonne monastery right next to it/in it. yeah, I want to eventually stat the 'Knights, Cid, and Gafgarion. and a heck of a lot of the others. But first I want to get the story conversion done. I'll post that in a (hopefully short) while. |
| ThanisKartaleon12-12-04, 05:28 AM | Righto, so here's the sketch for part one of my idea for a Tactics-inspired campaign, starting the party off as graduates of Rekkenmark military academy: Chapter One - The Meager The party (hereafter called the unit) is called to the presence of a superior officer. Apparently a band of thieves, deserters from the Last War calling themselves the Death Corps, have entered town and terrorized the nonmilitary populace. The unit is sent to eliminate this threat. Along with the unit comes a friend, Delita (names will change to avoid loss of player suspension of disbelief...). (Essentially, Delita will be a cohort for the whole party, at least until the end of Chapter One) Once the bandits are taken care of, the unit is commanded to report to their patrons, the brothers Dycedarg and Zalbag at Loran Rath (extra coolness if indeed one of the PCs is the half-brother Ramza type). On the Mandalia Plains on the way to Loran Rath, the unit + Delita encounters another band of Death Corps, attacking a young man (Algus). Regardess of whether they save him or not (This is one NPC I wouldn't mind the party killing off for no reason whatsoever...), they learn that he was escorting the Silver Noble when they were attacked, though Elmdor is nowhere to be seen. At Loran Rath, they are congratulated and rewarded for their victories thus far by Dycedarg, then put on watch duty. This is where Teta, Delita's sister, and one of the PCs siblings show up, as well as Zalbag. Zalbag informs the unit that the Death Corps has demanded a ransom for Elmdor, and that he was spotted near Aruldusk, in Thrane! Zalbag then idly comments about how boring guard duty is and casually walks away... The fastest way to get to Aruldusk is across the Brey River and through the Burnt Wood. The unit may take a different path, of course, but this is offered as the choice of least resistance (save one or two "random" battles ^^). When the unit finally arrives in Aruldusk, they manage to catch sight of the legendary Karrnathi warrior Weigraf, who supposedly died in the Last War, pushing around some more Death Corps punks before exiting stage right. Investigations (and a little back-alley tussle) reveal that the Death Corps hideout is in the east of the Talenta Plains, within the Blade Desert. Algus, if he's still alive, begins to really show his superiority complex here. Once the unit secures travel to the Talenta Plains and reaches the hideout, they experience a minor scuffle before breaking in to the inner sanctum. They do so just in time to miss mutiny with the Death Corps ranks. Weigraf, revealed to be the Death Corps leader, offers Elmdor back to the unit as long as they do not trouble him any further. Once back at Loran Rath, the unit receives sharp words from Dycedarg, before King Kaius himself steps from the shadows, silences Dycedarg and praises the unit for recovering such a decorated war hero. He then sends them on a mission to attack another one of the Death Corps hideouts, this one in the northern part of Karrnwood. At the Death Corps hideout, the unit encounters among the rabble a striking swordswoman named Miluda, who possesses a very familiar face. She makes her escape or is set free, while the rest of the hideout is destroyed. On the way back from Karrnwood, Death Corps guerillas storm Loran Rath and kidnap Teta, believing her to be related to either Dycedarg & Zalbag or one of the PCs (or both  ). Here Algus (again, if still alive) shows his true colors... hopefully unless the PCs are complete arses they will give him the big heave-ho. Following the trail brings the unit back out onto the Talenta Plains, where they encounter and defeat Miluda, then over the Ironroot and Hoarfrost Mountain ranges to the isle of Lorghalan, where they encounter Weigraf and realize that deceased Miluda is Weigraf's sister. Weigraf has already sent Teta to the Death Corps stronghold at Port Krez. After a vicious fight, Weigraf swears revenge, then teleports away. The trail to Port Krez is easy to follow, and this is the Death Corps last stand. As the unit bears down on the rebels, Zalbag shows up with another military unit, with Algus given the command of it. Showing utter disdain for commoners, Zalbag gives the order and Teta is shot, and things go to Khyber in a handbasket rather quickly after that. Finally, the unit gets away just as the magical reactions cause the rebel fort to explode, but it seems Delita and Teta didn't make it. New questions for the party abound, but now they are the outcasts; they must make it along without Karrnath's aid from now on. Fin Chapter One. Interlude to Chapter Two: The party is offered employment as mercenaries by a gruff old man named Gafgarion.... Eventually, they are given the big job: Protect Diani ir'Wynarn, heir to the Thranish throne, while she goes to pay her respects at Thronehold |

| RadicalTaoist12-12-04, 11:58 PM | There are two ways to run this campaign I feel: If you do it post-end of the Last War, then you have to remember that despite disagreements nobody wants to go into conflict again. However the tensions described do make for explosive situations, and one well-placed: a) squad of lethal assassins b) force of properly manipulated Darguun raiders c) infestation of aberrations or demons, or d) some combination of what's mentioned above will send the whole continent straight into war. So I'd have the PCs taking orders from a level-headed source of leadership whose primary goal is to make sure that the Last War doesn't become the Second-to-Last War. This would have the PCs spearheading efforts to quell potential conflicts before they become a real problem, kind of a peacekeeping corps but more bad-mofo-style. If you do it during the Last War, well, that does make some things easier but the plot becomes tricky. |
| ThanisKartaleon12-13-04, 03:01 AM | okay, well it's time to set up the new thread, but remember folks: it's okay to post on the old threads. They all need some lovin'. :) RadicalTaoist: So would you say then that it would be better used as a campaign event (meaning that Ramza & Co. are NPCs, and possible rivals of the party)? And I believe it makes much better sense to have it after the war. The game was set just after one huge 50 year war has ended, so the citizens would be feeling the same way Khorvaire's citizens do. |
| Prince Indirian12-13-04, 11:40 AM | Indeed-do this will be helpful. Thank you! :) Your welcome |
| Magagumo12-13-04, 11:49 AM | Good luck with this development- I just wanted to note that one should never "avoid" having suspension of disbelief :). (It's good if their disbelief and metagaming has been suspended  ) |
| RadicalTaoist12-13-04, 03:20 PM | So would you say then that it would be better used as a campaign event (meaning that Ramza & Co. are NPCs, and possible rivals of the party)?Whatever works. It's tricky to adapt the strategy RPG game plots to campaign settings in peacetime. I'll speak more on this when we get to the Ogre Battle thread (all hands up who thought Person of Lordly Calibre was superpwnage:ayyyy!: ) Say Magagumo, you haven't forgot to put up the results of your MGS-inspired game on that thread, have you? |

| Jayj12-13-04, 08:12 PM | The big question is when the campaign would take place. That's excellent work converting the blurbs, but the main problem is that most of which-side-allies-with-who isn't relevant to the actual main story of the game. The game's main story is about a retelling of Delita's time and the band of real heroes who were working in the semi-political realm. IIRC, the main thrust of the story is that the demons bound to the Zodiac Stones are trying to release their master, the evil creature that once served as the inspiration for the Holy Galbadian religion. I believe the release required a certain critical mass of chaos and war, together with some key artifacts (which I -think- were a majority of the Holy Stones), accompanied by a blood sacrifice (Ramza's sister). The translation made it rather dicey for me to make out exactly how the Zodiac Braves were trying to accomplish this... but the synopsis I gave, however incorrect it may be, will serve admirably. Components: A widespread church, inspired by an evil being that is now thought to have been good. Twelve stones, matching star constellations, with mystic powers and demons bound into them to be released by the ones willing to use their power. A political situation manipulated by said demons and various power-hungry men. A free-lancer group trying to follow the trail and defeat the schemes of the Zodiac Braves while constantly clashing with the political movements and the Holy Church that is being manipulated by the demons. How to adapt? The widespread church can deal either with the Church of the Silver Flame (release the bound demon!) or, depending on your taste, with releasing a Rajah or Xorian menace that once walked the earth whose actions formed the basis for one of the deities of the Sovereign Host (Boldrei was a lie! It was all started by Xinchub the Unspeakable!) Personally, being a big fan of the Cthulhu Mythos, I prefer the Xorian approach; a Great Old One-style menace has been sealed away, awaiting only the stars, the chaos of war, and a blood sacrifice to release it. Twelve semi-sealed Daelkyr, bonded to stones, have recently become active as the moons align, and they're trying to carry it out. Twelve is a very suspicious number. You can either go with the Draconic constellations, or simply have a Dragonmark planted in each stone. (interesting that the Dragonmark's design in the stones predates their appearance on mortals by several thousand years, isn't it?) The Daelkyr can possess the holder, or even augment their form in a crisis, if he's even remotely open to the idea. From there, it all falls into place. Politics needn't be ripped off from the game unless desired; the native politics of Eberron are more interesting, IMHO, and the point is the different groups gunning for our heroes while also fighting each other, which is easily enough accomplished without trying to convert the Nanten Knights, or whatnot (although, IMHO, you MUST convert Thunder God Cid). The campaign starts with some standard political folderol, but in what seems like a political machination, the sibling/lover of one of the PCs is kidnapped (to be used, secretly, as the ideal sacrifice/host body), and in the process of trying to rescue her, the first Dragonmark Stone is found. Then the quest becomes a scavenger hunt for info and stones, which is prevented from becoming a boring collect-the-widgets quest by a couple of factors: A) They're the only way to track the sister/lover down, B) The holder of each stone and the people who know various pieces of what's really going on happen to be on the run from or high in the heirarchy of one of the various power groups in Eberron, and C) Half the time, when you find a stone, you find a person who has been possessed by a Daelkyr, and the fight to claim the stone from it and remove the evil influence from a high position of power should be incredibly difficult (Velius, anyone? *shudder*). D) Not only are you going to run into various cults and servants of political powers after the stones, but there's also random groups who've heard the stones are pathways to power. They're all trying to take the stones from you. E) When the host body is defeated, the Daelkyr outside the seal falls quiescent again, right? Well... Anyone else got any ideas for plot elements to incorporate? - Jayj |
| Shas'O12-14-04, 12:17 AM | (Velius, anyone? *shudder*) - Jayj Chameleon robe+yelling 40 times +accumulating 50 times=death to Wiegraf and Velius in 1-2 turns. Other then that, Agrias oaks=my favorite character in that entire game, I hate how the characters that join your party after a while have no dialogue when they join. |
| ThanisKartaleon12-14-04, 04:45 AM | :OMG!, Jayj... :dancin:   That is just what we have been looking for! You rock! ... I've been rendered speechless... when I can compose myself I will attempt to add more to that... apologies for excessive smiley usage... but geez... |
| Stirge12-20-04, 03:26 PM | Everything looks fantastic so far, just one idea to add perhaps. Well, who says you have to throw away the zodiac symbol ideas (even though Dragonmarks sound good too)? There are 13 planes in Eberron that have their own orbit around the material plane, 12 if you don't count the Realms of Madness. Each of the Zodiac Stones can use a symbol from the chart on page 93 of the campaign sourcebook. Also, each of the Lucavi trapped inside the stones can each be from their own plane, or perhaps simply Daelkyr with powers emulating outsiders from the plane they come from. However, if you prefer to use the Lucavi as per FFT *evil grin* I found a nice conversion here (although it would have to be toned down severely if you planned on using it for a non-epic game): http://community.dicefreaks.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=561&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 (Link doesn't seem to work for me atm, perhaps it's the wrong one, if so-I'll look it up again later) Anyways, I'll definately be keeping an eye out on this thread ^_^ |
| ThanisKartaleon12-21-04, 06:24 AM | Anyways, I'll definately be keeping an eye out on this thread ^_^ Well thanks for tuning in! If you check p130, each dragonmark is attuned to a specific month. With a little work, you can attach a plane to each as well: Month: Plane Zarantyr: Kythri (Storm) Olarune: Shavarath (Sentinel) Therendor: Irian (Healing) Eyre: Xoriat (Making) Dravago: Lamannia (Handling) Nymm: Syrania (Hospitality) Lharvion: Risia (Detection) Barrakas: Fernia (Finding) Rhaan: Daanvi (Scribing) Sypheros: Mabar (Shadow) Aryth: Thelanis (Passage) Vult: Dolurrh (Warding) (Serpentarius): Dal Quor yeah, some of them are a stretch, but it's the best fit I can think of at the moment. So the question is which look cooler, dragonmarks or planar marks? I go with Dal Quor being the 13th, because Xoriat can eventually become coterminous again (after 7000 some odd years), whereas Dal Quor, thanks to the giants, can never* do so. I made Xoriat fit with the month of making because that's what the Daelkyr do when they're not destroying worlds... make stuff... usually living stuff. Eagerly awaiting the Lucavi link up. :) Stirges are awesome, btw... I remember this one Dragon article that had variant stirge species, including a large sized stirge. I think it was 2nd edition, though. *or so my players can believe ^^ |
| Jayj12-21-04, 10:56 AM | Regarding the stats for the adapted Lucavi... you can use those for Daelkyr stats. All the Lucavi were horrific creatures, and the first aspect of the Daelkyr is their mutability; IMHO, no two should look alike. Give them these nightmare forms and name them to make them unique; no need to adhere to the description in the ECS. You should even mix up the types of creatures that serve each one, both twisted (pseudonatural template) versions of normal creatures and new aberrations from MMIII, Fiend Folio, etc. As for Dragonmarks vs. Planes vs. Draconic Constellations... there aren't enough Constellations, but the planes might work. If you ask me, the Planes have more of the "astral" feel of the zodiac signs, whereas the Dragonmarks have more a flavor of mysterious, unexplained power. The planes are almost mundane compared to them, and like the zodiac stones, Dragonmarks are seen as a sign and portent. So I'd have to go with D-marks. - Jayj |
| zerotkatama12-21-04, 01:10 PM | What about the aspect of the stones being more in the eye of the wielder I.E. the seemingly good side that Rafa invokes without any possession of her brother? (trying to avoid spoilers) |
| ThanisKartaleon12-21-04, 02:36 PM | What about the aspect of the stones being more in the eye of the wielder I.E. the seemingly good side that Rafa invokes without any possession of her brother? (trying to avoid spoilers) Okay, let's give our superpowerful fiends the genie ability to grant the wish of the holder of the stone. If the wish is anything but pure in intent, it fails and the fiend takes over (DC Massive Will save) |
| zerotkatama12-21-04, 05:32 PM | Mmmmh... I suppose. I guess I always held the interpretations that the stones were neither good nor evil, they just reflected the user's will. |
| Stirge12-21-04, 07:51 PM | Link should be working now, I think. One interpretation I heard of it was that the stones themselves were holy, but only without the Lucavi sealed in them. I think they used Taurus on Malak (Rafa's brother), which Lucavi's form was already defeated. Btw, does anyone have a script of the game that's more faithfully translated from Japanese? I've heard everywhere how the plot of FFT was screwed up by the mistranslation, but can't actually get a source on which parts exactly were changed. As for PCs, if the Church of the Silver Flame and the Xoriat are involved, it would be cool if one of the PCs was a weretouched (Maybe before being banished, the daelkyr cursed the Zodiac warriors so that they became lycanthropes? or some other reason why the church would want them all extinct), a druid with that wardkeeper (or similar) feat, and perhaps a PC from a Dragonmark house would be cool. The one girl from the Church of the Silver Flame is a dead ringer for Ajora, you'd just have to change some things about divinations/directly communing with deities for a FFT campaign I think. And the story behind the SN is well, I wanted a whole lot of other stuff I think when I joined the WotC boards, but at least 4 of the names I wanted were taken, so the idea hit me that stirge wasn't taken since they're one of the lowest challenging D&D critters ;), and it was the perfect name for me at a time (I was a bit of a munchkin, heh) voila! |
| ThanisKartaleon12-22-04, 05:38 AM | Okay, so here's an idea: The Zodiac stones (call them Dragonmark shards, I guess) were relics created by the faithful of Dol Arrah to trap powerful fiends. What the faithful of Dol Arrah didn't know, and could know, is that Dol Arrah herself is a lie, a front used by the minion of an unspeakable Progenitor Horror. Ignorance, in this case, was bliss, as the power of the faithful to create these relics came from their not knowing this terrible fact. The binding, however, is imperfect, as a result of the minion's contaminating influence. Now the Dragonmark shards only await planar alignment and the spark of war to be set free... yay for crossover threads! |

Now the Dragonmark shards only await planar alignment and the spark of war to be set free... yay for crossover threads! Perhaps the Stones contain the Rakshasa Rajahs within them. And the Silver Flame bound them, but most now the Rajahs whisper throught the silver flame, this is the Dark Flame, and seeks to corupt members of the flame who can give thiers souls to free the inprisoned Rajahs. I still like the ring of Holy Stones. I'd say the stones grant minor powers until someuses the wish ability, if impure the user of the stone gain so sort of templete and becomes Lucavi (the name of the Templete) and would be a lesser version of the bound demon who resides within the stone. |
