The description of Horrid Animals in the Eberron Campaign Setting indicates that they are being bred for war. Then, is House Vidalis doing the breeding? I am creating a 3rd level human ranger (25 point buy):

Str 11
Dex 14
Con 12
Int 12
Wis 10
Cha 14

────┤ FEATS ├────
Animal Affinity, Skill Focus: Handle Animal, Track, Endurance, Least Dragonmark (Handling), Rapid Shot.

────┤ SKILLS ├────
Handle Animal +15, Heal +6, Listen +4, Ride +12, Search +3, Spot +4, Survival 6+2, Use Rope +4, Knowledge: Nature +9, Craft: Leatherworking +5.

────┤ LANGUAGES ├────
Common, Elven

With his Handle Animal check (not to mention +7 on Wild Empathy), I figured he would be capable of training a Horrid Animal. Since he is a member of House Vidalis (and dragonmarked), I figured it could even be a Magebred Horrid Animal. Perhaps a Heavy Warhorse as the base animal. Now, what would be the cost for him to be able to purchase a baby to work with? What about the cost of acid-proof gloves (or at least acid resistant)?

Horrid Animals were created by the Gatekeepers to fight against the aberrations during the Daelkyr invasion. That's not to say you couldn't find one and train one, but they aren't being bred/sold by House Vadalis (at least not the way I see Vadalis).

This is true that druids bred the horrid animals, and one of the accepted classes into House Vidalis is druid (according to Dragonmarked). I am under the impression that in different areas, House Vidalis breeds different animals. In the Shadow Marches and the western sections of the Eldeen Reaches, I would expect Gatekeeper druids to be eligible for entry into House Vidalis (especially dragonmarked members). I would see no reason they would not breed magebred horrid animals. Regardless of where this might occur, I know the cost for a magebred animal (x2 cost of a normal one). What I am wondering is the likely cost for a horrid animal.

Also, if no one has a suggestion for how much it should cost to purchase, would you be able to offer a recommendation for how much of a character's starting wealth would be tied up in a wild horrid heavy horse, should you believe a magebred variety would not be available? I wouldn't mind the ranger having a wild one on his hands (obviously, the warhorse would not be trained yet, and part of the initial roleplaying would be the ranger trying to push the animal to do things (which is still fairly possible with his +11 with the animal). At the next level, instead of taking an animal companion, my DM has allowed me to apply the +4 that ordinarily applies to a druid or ranger's animal companion and apply it to the horrid horse, even though it would not be his animal companion. This would allow me to take a 10 to push the animal when not in combat.

How does this look for horrid animals:

The template increases natural armor by 5 and adds acid to the creature's primary attack. It also grants the Ill-Tempered special quality, Immunity to Acid, and Improved Natuarl Healing. Its Con increases by 4, and it gains Improved Natural Attack for EACH of its natural attacks. It's CR only increases by 1.

Because of this, it looks like it would be extremely powerful to any animal, and any animal could take advantage of it equally. So, perhaps for a bred animal, it would cost the animal's base price x4? Would that seem adequate? That way, a Horrid Heavy Warhorse would cost 1600gp, and a Horrid Magebred Heavy Warhorse would cost 3200gp?

Good idea, but I thought that the horrid temp can only be applied to dire animals?

An if you do want to purchase a mage bred horrid animal would it cost the animal's base price x8?

Ah, you are correct! Sorry about that. Ok then, what would the roll be for a ranger attempting to tame a horrid ape (for instance)? If a 3rd level ranger were to have a horrid animal (perhaps a Horrid Weasle) to start (but not as an animal companion, just as an animal he has "tamed"), would it cost any gp as "starting equipment"?

Monster Manual II has the Dire Horse. My character's backstory:

Grew up in western Eldeen Reaches, excellent Animal Handling skills, was put on project to attempt to breed magebred horrid horses. The one success resulted in a creature not much less aggressive than its progenitors. With the experiment considered a failure, my character is the only one who they feel can handle the beast. If he doesn't want it, they will put it down. He has a soft spot for it, as he raised it from birth.

Given that story, how much of his starting equipment would you recommend be spent on the beast?
