Anyone else see the Art Gallery and the material that it presents?

My favorite is the Silver Pyromancer. I can't wait to see what that is.

I liked the picture of the LoB, although he might have had too many blades (if that's possible). Finally an Aundairian Dragonhawk!

I disliked the large amounts of magebred animals. I didn't know tigers were being bred a lot. Kaius looked like Dracula or Strahd.

I imagined Kaius more like how Boranel looked, but I think I want a silver golem. I didn't like the LoB pic, the one in Dragon or Dungeon (not sure which) looked cooler.

Oh yeah, Silver Pyromancer, Whispering Flame Cultist, Bone Knight....looks like we'll be getting some awesome PrCs soon....*drools*

The Silver Pyromancer (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90026.jpg) seemed... somewhat counterintuitive. But 'tis cool!

And here we have the ultimate answer for all those who talk about stealing Conductor Stones (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90011.jpg). Seems painful. I like it. Muhahahaha!

Loving all the Magebred animals... see all the Valadis love!

Although this (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90009.jpg) is labeled a Living Spell, it seems like something spawned by the Daelkyr. Apocalypse Child sounds like a very evocative name... can't wait to sic it on someone. :plotting:

I love (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/89988.jpg) the Aundairian Trent picture. It is the shnizit! :mage:

Queen Aurala is looking as devious (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/89983.jpg) (and sexay) as ever.

And (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/89982.jpg) I (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/89981.jpg) cannot (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/89991.jpg) say (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90001.jpg) in (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90022.jpg) words (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90012.jpg) how cool all those chapter pages are! Preeetttyyy.... :mymy:

What else do I like... oh yeah! We finally know what the Madstone (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90015.jpg) looks like! Reminds me of that compound psicrystal Kalashtar Telepaths use. We also see... The Madborn (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90019.jpg). Schweeet.

I also love anything and everything that is connected with Karrnath, but it would be wasteful to post links to all of them. So allow me to declare the coolness of all these pictures! They make my head spin! :looloo: (even the ones I didn't link to... or are Karrnathi connected  )

Hmmm.... conductor stones (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90011.jpg) are further apart than I thought they would be. I wonder if that is artistic license or actually how they are?

This (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90020.jpg) is quite possibly the nastiest creature I've yet seen in D&D. It just stays in my head and stares at me. Kudos there.

I like him. He is creepy. (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90025.jpg) It implies that they are doing something with the demon bound into the Silver Flame, which I like a good deal.

And this thing here (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90000.jpg) just might be my favorite device yet. Something about it just makes me happy.

Good work all around there. I am looking forward to next month.

Haven't seen the Dragon or Dungeon pics of everyone's favourite LoBster, but I've got two words about this (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90002.jpg) one: "Yeah, baby!"

Okay, a bit more than that, actually. Did anyone notice a remarkable resemblance between the Lord of Blades and Sarah Kerrigan of StarCraft fame? Y'know, the self-styled (gasp!) Queen of Blades? Specifically, I mean those arm things on the back. You Blizzard fans out there know what I mean, I'm sure.
I'm willing to believe its a coincidence, but damn, that's a hell of a coincidence. :)

Oh, and I want to know the stats on that nasty looking weapon he's wielding. Just a two-bladed sword, or is there more to it?

Also, I'm curious that since there's a full picture of our favourite construct villain, will stats be provided too? I just recall the age-old wisdom that "If you stat it, PCs will want to kill it," and I just can't imagine an Eberron without our warforged prophet running around. Maybe I'm just a prude.

Okay, moving on from the LoBster...

The Silver Golem intrigues me. I get the impression it isn't as big or powerful as the existing golems, which to me is a good thing. There are enough golems of that CR-range as it is. We need more mid-level construct foes. On top of that, artificers need some non-homunculi to craft in the mid-levels too. Maybe the Silver Golem will fill that niche?

I pictured King Boranel to be similar to how he's depicted, though I expected him to have a longsword (though that's somewhat cliche, I admit). There was a thread in the People and Places forum a while ago about his duel with the champion of Droaam, and I liked the suggestion someone there had of Boranel wearing a helm in the form of a roaring bear head (a symbol you seem to see everywhere in Breland). The circlet/crown thing is okay, but I wouldn't want to wear it into battle. Interesting arching electricity about his armour... Some sort of new elemental bonding, perhaps? Is there a Lightning or Storm elemental I'm unaware of? Is it just a fancy way of depicting Lightning Resistance?

The impression I got from Queen Aurala's picture was "I'm Queen, and I love it!" Don't know why, but it may be the almost casual look she's got, what with the wine and crossed leg. Not quite as dour and dignified as one normally pictures a monarch. I likes.

I'm thinking the Valiant Scout could serve as a character portrait for anyone ranging from a ranger to a monk with Whirling Steel Strike.

Anyone heard/read anything about the Six Kings? (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/89993.jpg) Looks like a Darguun or Droaam monument, most likely. My bet is they're ancient Dhakaani kings, which I'm sure is shocking to you all. :p I wonder where it is...

From the looks of the Mutated Survivor (Boar) we've got at least another monster template in there, and I'm sure I'm not the only one expecting it to focus on the Mournland fauna.

Any speculation on the Draconic Beast? (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90028.jpg) Eberron has tended to avoid using dragon-like creatures, preferring to keep dragons and their kin enigmatic. Is this a land-bound wyvern of sorts? A Magical Beast or Aberration completely unrelated to Dragons? My paladins next mount?

I too expected Kaius to appear older and bearded, like Boranel, but now that I think about it, vampirism keeps you looking young, so maybe not. Over all, he looks very creepy, to me. Almost too creepy in fact. How can you not say "Holy crap! A vampire!" when you meet this guy? Maybe the red-eye effect can be turned off. :)

If I hadn't already seen some of the structures that counted as parish churches in medieval Europe, the village church (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90030.jpg) (of the Silver Flame, it seems) might seem like a bit of overkill. Imagine the scale the Cathedral in Flamekeep must be built on.

After seeing the art gallery, I'm feeling much better about 5 Nations than I did even a week ago. Looks fantastic!

(IIRC, somewhere it's mentioned that even the smallest Silver Flame shrines are built with defense in mind.)

....... Why did wotc have to put up the art gallery a month before the book is due to come out? As if I didn't want to book enough already they went and did this. :weep: Why can't it be out NOW!!

The only picture I wasn't too crazy about is Kauis's, but then I realized thats probably his "Screw being subtle. I'm ****** and a vampire so now I'm just going to tear your still beating heart out of your chest with my bare hands"-pose. Or at least something like that.

I disliked the large amounts of magebred animals. I didn't know tigers were being bred a lot.
I figure the magebreds are the national animals of their respective nations. Breland has a bear in its coat of arms, right? Perhaps the animal of Cyre was the tiger.

One thing, is it just me or are the Cyre and Thrane chapter starters mixed up?

Oh. My. God.

Looks incredible, I must say. Steve Prescott, once again, does an AMAZING job.

This art gallery certainly came early, and I'm much more excited about this book now than I was before. Though that's not to say i wasn't excited before, but now I'm impatient. :D

Stats were provided in a Dungeon magazine a while back. The LoB graced the cover of that issue and got himself a nice little article.

The picture on the cover is nowhere near as cool as Steve Prescott's LoB, but there is a definite connection in design, namely that two-bladed sword of his. The fanned-out spread of blades looks soooo sweet...

For the most part i like the gallery but I was not pleased with the representations of either Kaius or Krozen (it must be LE "K" day here)

While i understand that Kaius is a vampire and all he goes to great lengths to hide it. Not only this but as he is attempting to be his great-grandson i actually think he should look no older than 40. Additionally, Kaius is described as being "whip-thin" and i must say that the illustration provided is certianly not.

Now then, the Cardinal. Although very little information regarding Krozen has been supplied us, I had, none the less, come to the conclusion that he was quite old and lacking in any real physical prowess, a cerebral and clever man yes, a warrior no. I saw Krozen as a man who had been cardinal for decades, using a combination of theology and schrewed politics to cement his posistion as High Cardinal and de facto ruler of Thrane. The picture provided was certianly not at all like the man i would have thought Krozen to be.
Zedium

06-11-05, 05:28 AM
Concerning Kaius, yeah I expected him to be more thin, but in the picture, the armor seems to increase his size too. Looking at how his head is shaped, he is quite thin without it.

Krozen does strike me as an interesting figure, somehow he does seem to fit the picture of a charismatic villain. At first I immagined him more like the pope, but now looking at the picture he strikes me as a very ambitious villain and he contrasts a lot with the Keeper of the Flame. Just immagine this guy argueing with a little girl over what is best for the nation. He also strikes me as the kind of guy who is devious and will do anything for power, which is quite fitting.

This (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90018.jpg) strikes me as weird though, at first sight it appears to be a dolphin with runic markings, but on closer inspection one will notice the dorsal fin is on the wrong side of the body for it to be a dolphin, or the eyes are on the lower half of the creature. Still, it looks cute and cudly.

Also a nice detail: Notice the guy in the red coat. (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/89985.jpg) Yep, same guy as in this pic (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/eb_gallery/82083.jpg)

Wow, we have gotten this early! I expect they forgot to tell the website team to push back the features of the 5N features to July with the book!
Ah, well, not complaining!
The pictures are great, and it look like we'll finally be getting stats for the dragonhawk!
The magebred animal = heraldic animal is a good idea. I guess that would mean eagle is to Aundair, bear is to Breland (we already knew that), tiger is to Cyre and Karrnath and Thrane don't have one.
I'm a bit disappointed in the Cyre section. I've nothing against the art that is there, but there seems very little of Cyre and a whole lot of Mournland.

On another note, the PrCs look like they will be:
Aundair- Valiant Scout
Breland- King's Dark Lantern
Cyre/Mournland- Windcutter
Karrnath- Boneknight
Thrane- Silver Pyromancer
I had hoped for others, like an Aundairian warmage and a Cyran artificer PrC, but ah well. These could still turn out well.

Bear in mind this could be a mistake as, IIRC, Five nations was pushed back a month.

As far as I can tell, we've got a chapter on aundair, Breland, Cyre, the mournland (seperate it seems and I certainly hope), Karnath and Thrane.

And it's certainly nice to see new eberron styled chapter openers. Been a while since we've had many of those.

Well, if you've read the back cover text (http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20050407a), that's to be expected.

Aurala of Aundair, Boranel of Breland, Kaius of Karrnath, and Diani of Thrane. Nobody should be surprised Diani isn't a real queen. My advice to her, if she wants the royal house back in charge, would be to name her son/daughter with a name that begins by "th", such as Thomas or Theresa. :)

Really? I was under the impression that the Church held the power, not the Keeper.
It's a matter of having power in name and having power in actuality. The Church does hold the power. And Jaela Daran is the head of the Church. But she focuses herself more on the spiritual side of things, while allowing others (like High Cardinal Krozen) to deal with the more worldly aspects of running the nation.

Overall, good art... but these villains.. whew! Talk about 'over the top'! There's not one of these guys you wouldn't look at and think "Oh, wow! A villain!"

I always kind of envisioned the top-flight Eberron villains as being a bit more subtle than all that. Ah, well—the glory of rôle-playing games!—in my campaign, they are.

I'm really looking forward to Five Nations.

Its picture is labeled as an "ice pilot." This makes me think its inspired by the real world creature called a "pilot whale." You can search images on google for pilot whales. They do tend to have a low eye placement in comparison to their mouth, though I haven't seen one where the eye is under the mouth. The lower right fin/flipper could actually be its dorsal fin, so it could be doing a backflip as stone dog suggests. Without seeing its tail, its difficult to say. If the runic designs are symmetrical, the two circular designs near its "flippers" would indicate that its doing a backflip as well.

The Aundair landscape pic is wonderful. Who wouldn't want want to be travelling through that scene on the LR?
Quick questions:
are those dragonhawks soaring high above?
anyone willing to guess where in Aundair that scene is from? Favourite is Wrogar Keep along the Aundair river...

I should have expected the damn computer to eat my post. The gist of it was "I'm cautiously optimistic. There's too much undead stuff, it makes Karrnath look gimmicky. The Silver Pyromancer is too litterally fire-themed. What is that bovine-unicorn-centaur thing? The ice pilot is leaping belly-up."

Jaela Daran is not in charge of Thrane, she is (supposed to be) in charge of the Church of the Silver Flame. The governing body of Thrane is the Council of Cardinals, which is headed by High Cardinal Krozen.
Quoted from the ECS, page 209:
"The Keeper of the Flame, currently eleven-year old Jaela Daran, sits on both the spiritual and worldly thrones of the nation. The Council of Cardinals aids the Keeper in overseeing the functions of government and church. Both secular and religious authorities follow a reporting structure atop which sits the Cardinals, who in turn report to the Keeper of the Flame."

This important passage of text indicates that Jaela is the supreme power of Thrane, in both a spiritual and political sense. No indication that Jaela leaves everything up to the Cardinals.

Besides, no matter what role she plays in politics, Jaela is the single most visible member of the Church of the Silver Flame and Thrane politics. Even if Krozen did wield more political power, it would be from out of view compared to Jaela. Because of this, a good image would be incredibly useful regardless of her political authority. And the sight of an eleven-year-old girl decked out like the Pope ruling over a court would be awesome. That in itself is reason enough to include an image.

But as I said, other than that omission it is a great gallery.

I wonder what Silver Golems can do...

According to Keith, while Jaela does have the last word in all Thranish matters and could step in at any time to rule the country, for the most part she lets the Council of Cardinals handle secular affairs, prefering to focus her attention on spiritual issues.
aelryinth

06-11-05, 10:56 PM
The reason for this is perceived weakness. Jaela has literally almost no power without the Flame empowering her. While she has access to great wisdom from the Flame, she has not developed what it means to be herself at all, and thus is at a considerable disadvantage against the strong personality of who is basically a self-made man.

If she was a level 20 cleric all the time, everywhere...well, now, Mr. Cardinal, you've a problem. But she's not...and in real world matters, not his equal.

Kiaus kinda shocked me cos i had sorta imagined a vampire who HID his true nature and not so evil looking. I guess this is what he looked like when Vol turned his bloodlust on.

The kind of Breeland looks like what I imagined him to look. Aurunals queen kinda had a tarty look to her not impressed. The cardinal please.... hes not supposed to be all that and then some more but more sinister "who me" devious looking with an air of fake innocence.

Zedium nice pointing out...

im actually kinda glad they didnt have a picture of the keeper of the flame, in my mind she looks like the queen of naboo (in the giesha like get up)

I kinda imagine Jaela as whats her name... the vampire girl from Interview with the Vampire. Especially when she goes all creepy and wise. I mean... look at that 11 year old kids levels... even without the flame she's a 3rd level cleric, which for a 11 year old kid is pretty darn special. No wonder she's the keeper. But think about what those skill bonuses would mean... This is one darn creepy girl when she wants to be, even if it does come from a 'good' source.

I picture her as a sort of Alia Atreide...

It's amusing, however, how frequently little girls are used as the embodiment of creepiness. See Wednesday Adams. Or the possessed girl in the Exorcist.

There was a thread on ENWorld asking DMs what tricks they've used to freak out the players, and the number of little girls (zombie little girls, fiends disguised as little girls, and so on) was astounding.

Maybe little boys who grow up are still afraid of cooties. :P

Just took a quick swing though the Art and have to suppress a grin. The art for Five Nations seem a little darker than in the last two (ECS, S:CoT). The Lord of Blades got my attention immediately. I have the Dungeon Magazine in which he appeared so seeing this peace confirmed for me what a bad-ass he is. In the Dungeon art you can clearly see the two-bladed sword but it has its blades closer together. Rather then sticking with fanned blades or tighter ones I think it would be cool to have is weapon actually unfold those blades when he gets into combat. Let the PCs know this guy is dangerous when he snaps open his weapon from one blade to three on each end. On top of that have him extend those bladed wing like things and charge the the parties primary melee guy.

For those looking at the Queen of Blades vs. Lord of Blades connection, I don't think there is one. I'm not an art or symbolism expert but I know such 'wings' aren't are limited to those two. Needless to say it makes him(it?) that much evil/cooler.

Now perhaps we will get the stats on the Dragon Hawk (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/89989.jpg), unless its just another pretty picture.

Oh lets give a shout out to monsters we don't see to often, treant (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/89988.jpg), centaur (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/89998.jpg), and bulette (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90020.jpg). When was the last time someone has used the land shark on a party?

When was the last time someone has used the land shark on a party? Haven't yet, but I plan to play a Brotherhood of the Wolf game with one of those as the monster.

Sorry, I've made a mistake, like you told I tought Krozen was Kaïus Henchmen, but now I recall the guy, he supposed to by Jaela right hand but he's in truth the big boss, ok now I understand, but I think that loyalty from Thrane people goes more to Jaela than to Krozen. She just don't care about politics, but if she wanted. Am I the only one who think that Krozen face just scream : "EVIL!" He could be a little more subtle. :D

After seeing this thread, I decided to take a swing through the art gallery, something I don't usually do.

And all I have to say is WOW. I want this book more now.

I didn't particularly like the representations of Kaius, because he always seemed far more subtle than that to me. The picture just screams "I am an evil vampiric baddie", which just doesn't seem like Kaius to me. Other than that though, I really enjoyed looking at all of the art, and I did like the Lord of Blade picture.

Why does the book have to come out next month Wizards? Why why why??? :weep:

Because they're taking the time to make sure it is up to snuff. I, for one, do not mind at all, even if they take another month after this.

That aside, the art is awsome, I'm expecting good things from this one.

I like the looks of things, the bone Knight looks great. I wanna know where the six kings are located.

One thing, the LOBster looks horrible, he just doesn't looks, well, sharp enough, the only blades mounted on his him are on his shoulders and the goofy back chicken arms...

Complete agreement with you Drake. I would wait another two months and pay five to ten dollars more for a guarantee of quality. Although having the book now would help me plan my next Eberron campaign better. Guess I'm focusing on Sharn for the first few adventures.

Art Gallery looks awesome! I wish it would have come out this month, so that I could get it for my B-day, but I expect that in the end the delay will improve the content, so I'll just have to hope I get some money to buy it.

I'm excited about both the Bone Knight and the Silver Pyromancer.
I bet we'll see some clarification for the mournland healing rules finally, along with dragonhawk stats.
Plus 160 pages of (hopefully) delicious fluff, that answers every question we have about the Five Nations, and leaves us with several thousand new ones in their place.

Wow Wow Wow, I likes a lot. The was only one thing that disapointed me. When I first read about him King Boranel struck me as a Teddy Roosevelt clone. Oh well, I can still have him say "bully" at the end of each sentance anyway.

I like the art A LOT! Five Nations is definately on my "must have" list now...

Some of my favourites:
Cathedral Gargoyle (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90027.jpg). For some reason 'he' just oozes character. I'll 'prolly use him as a NPC sometime.

The Whispering Flame Cultist (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90025.jpg) just screams of "I have power you can barely imagine"

Cardinal Krozen (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90023.jpg). For some reason he reminds me of the Patrician.

The Lord of Blades (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90002.jpg). He just screams "Run if you want. You will only die tired"

I picture her as a sort of Alia Atreides...

I think it has do with the fact that children (especially girls) are commonly considered to be pure and innocent and when things show to the contrary, most will feel discomforted.

But you propably knew this allready :P

wasn't there a creepy wise-beyond-her-years girl in the first Dune book also? I seem to remember one, but its been so long since I read that book...

edit: on topic... am I the only one who thinks the illustrations High Cardinal Krozen and the Whispering Flame Cultist make it look like the same person? Different clothes, but same person...

You're not the only one.
I would be disappointed actually if Krozen turns out to have the "listening to the other voice" kind of corruption, rather than the "sometimes you have to break a few eggs to make an omlette" kind of corrupt church official. I would think that the position High Cardinal would be more than a bit too exposed to try to keep such a secret, especially when the Keeper of the Flame is as principled as apparently Jaela is. Perhaps T5N will make things more clear.

You mean Alia Atreides Paul's sister?

As for Krozen, no I don't think they are supposed to be the same person. Similar perhaps, but I don't see Krozen screwing around with forces that he isn't sure that he can't control. And that guy, doesn't look like he's in control.

It's doing a back flip :). So you are seeing it upsidedown!

They so nailed that one from my description. I LOVE how the art turned out :D.

I'm a bit disappointed in the Cyre section. I've nothing against the art that is there, but there seems very little of Cyre and a whole lot of Mournland.

*Chuckle* The Windcutter isn't a Warforged PrC 8).
Most of the Cyrans that survived now congregate in Breland, and got the full treatment :).

I was looking at the LoB's back and the bladed wings on his back look more like another double weapon that unfolds. look at the weapon he's holding how it has a little hinge like part down the shaft.
