Five Nations? DM Screen? [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-10-05, 11:16 PM I am reading on here that some people have gotten the Five Nations supplement and the DMs screen for Eberron already, but when I drove 1hr into town today (where the closest decent bookstore and comic store are both located) they both said that Five Nations doesnt come out until next month :confused: , and I didnt even ask about the DM screen. I then came home and checked Amazon, and you can't even order it yet, it still is on preorder,even though it is past the release date on its own form. What is the deal with that? Is it out or not? Did some people order Five Nations and the DM screen from elsewhere? I need my Eberron fix. Please someone explain to me what happened. Thanks!

07-10-05, 11:22 PM The great thing and the bad thing about Wizards of the Coast is they try to send their books to FLGS before the BIG stores. That way they can stay alive in the world of 50% off cover price. But some stores get books before others and when WotC says a book is out in July it can be ANYWHERE from the first to the thirty first. Then the big stores usally get them first thing next month or at the very end of that month.

I was going to try and get them at my local gaming store this thursday, but on the 3rd the building went down in flames when some idiot fired a firework into the side of the building. And since the closest gaming store is about an hours drive, it'll be a while for me.

07-11-05, 12:35 AM Walmart.com sells the DND books really cheap actually, about $10-12 dollars off as soon as they are released. I don't even buy from my retail store anymore, I mean $10-12 is a lot to save!

Walmart gets my business for a lot of day to day living items, but when it comes to my games, I try to keep it local.

And THAT is why WotC tries to ship to FLGS first and everything else a month later. People who enjoy the real gaming stores spend the money to have it first. Everyone else can get it at 50% off a month later from the BIG GUYS.

Buy your non-Eberron books from used book stores.
The majority of my 3e collection has come from McKay's Used Books and CDs, where I can buy my D&D books for $10-$15 a pop, instead of $30-$40 a pop. Excellent condition, and all it takes is some patience, and any book I want will rotate through there eventually. I literally bought all three 3.5 core rulebooks used (but in excellent condition, like new) for about the same price as buying just one of them at cover price.

If you're any good at painting minis, $3 worth of Reaper mini a pop, initial investment of about $5 worth of applebarrel craft paint and $5 worth of brushes, and you can easily eBay painted figs for $25 a piece. I've seen the REALLY good ones go for up to $500 a piece. All it takes is a few hours, and you're turning 800% or more in profits.

Oriental flavored Ramen Noodles actually make a very good meal if you crack a raw egg into the bottom of the bowl before you microwave them, makes sure you get some protein in your diet. Oh yeah, and orange juice, keeps the scurvey away ;)

Heck, about about to start buying it from Wal-Mart, and with a 10% off, I should get it damned cheap. Though, there is a local bookstore I want to help keep running.

07-11-05, 06:25 PM Im surprised that my inquiry has started such a little discussion here... oh and Edymnion, I actually was going to town for a different reason (meeting my girlfriend for lunch after she got back from a long family trip), buying a book was an uliterior motive (as it usually is) :plotting: , I had to go to town anyway, just, when I got there... she was waiting for me at the bookstore, and she said... "Honey, I have some bad news..." Anyway, I usually DO call, I just wasn't thinking about it at the time, since I was "popping by" so to speak.

And, since I started this thread, I think I'll throw in my two cents... I believe in supporting local community gaming stores if they are available, and deserving. Over the years I have moved a lot, some stores I really liked and felt that they added to the community overall as a fun place to hang out, purchase my wares and make friends. Others were dives that cared more about their own well being rather than that of their customers, (barely helpful, always complaining about not getting things from companies, and placing miniature sets on shelves that looked suspiciously "re-shrink wrapped"). The most recent store available to me is the "dive" kind, and that is why I drive an hour out of my way to get books from another store, one that is a F riendly, not so L ocal, G aming S tore!

So in short, support the good ones, avoid the bad ones! Reap what you sow! If need be, order online if you have to, and buy from stores when you can. :D

Thats okay I ordered two in stock books from them about a month ago, and they haven't shipped. But I digress.

I'm all for the FLGS. Mine will do special orders if they don't usually carry a certain book. Its good times.

As for Wal-Mart, I like the cargo shorts they have, and their electronics section. Its all about dirt cheap 27" Samsung TVs.

07-11-05, 11:59 PM After seeing some of the delays some people have had to put up with from Amazon, I have refused to preorder any item from them, no matter the discount. I've always preferred going down to my FLGS and picking up a copy.

My advice to anyone on these boards who wants to contribute to discussion of newer material: Don't preorder from Amazon.

That's not to say that Amazon isn't a place to buy your goods; I've purchased quite a number of items from them in the past... just, nothing I have to preorder for. :)

You can get an even better discount at Amazon.com, and then you don't have to pay sales tax or shipping, either! (Well, no shipping if your total order is more than $25). Sure, you have to wait a bit longer than at the FLGS, but at least ordering from Amazon isn't supporting the evil empire of Wal-Mart. If you knew more about their business practices and the way they treat their employees, you might think twice about shopping there. But, these boards are not a place for such a diatribe, so I'll stop there. :rolleyes:
