Fleshing Out the Planes of Eberron [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-13-07, 10:00 AM Seeing as how everyone seems to be keen on seeing a Planes of Eberron type book, I was thinking perhaps we could do a community exercise of building one up ourselves. Unfortunately, while the Fleshing Out the Fringe Nations thread doesn't seem to be really going anywhere, I'll be sure to put up a thread for this in ONE WEEK. As opposed to scoring every plane in the book, I think we should just give our top 3 in the order we want them. For the purposes of this exercise, the Transitive Planes and the Material Plane each count as a category. Not that anyone will necessary want them, but for the sake of completeness...

For me:

1. Syrania

2. Daanvi

3. Thelanis

08-13-07, 10:10 AM Shavarath would be the most important to me, after that just about anything is good. Thelianis takes my second vote and lastly would be Dolurrh. I'd be happy to help with fleshing those out.

08-13-07, 02:27 PM While this should in no way dissuade you, I'll just note that I do intend to make something official happen with the planes, whether it's a sourcebook, web articles, or something else. I'd been talking about Planes articles with Paizo, and I'm having the same discussion with the DI people. As Fireballed Mage's dragonmarked house thread shows, there's no reason why the existence of official material should stop the creation of a thread, and you may like your ideas more than mine. But it is a topic I have strong opinions about, and one I intend to address as soon as possible.

08-13-07, 11:02 PM Actually, there was an interesting thread on EN World in the last few days where someone suggested that anything you post on these boards in the property of Wizards of the Coast, or I imagine at the very least can be used by Wizards of the Coast. So, theoretically, if the guy with the big rubber stamp so willed it, a truly exceptional idea could perhaps influence the content of the book. Now, that might be a very unlikely scenario, but a guy can hope.

So there, I admit it, this is really just all part of my dastardly plot! :rolleyes: ;)

This does happen. I've seen it. In fact, I know of one item in a sourcebook that is almost verbatim a series of my questions and the responses to them. There's no point it knowing just what it is, but there's other examples of this from other posters to the threads. Something about the origins of the Valenar horses comes to mind...

Personally, I'm more interested in the interactions/connections or lack thereof between the various kinds of celestials, fiends, and other outsiders, than in one or more specific planes. Carry on with your project if you will, but it'd be hard to put together anything coherent without settling on these issues as well. The other thing that would be helpful to be done would be to compile what is known so far about the planes and decide whether or not to include it. For instance, one would have to decide whether or not to use the information in MM III, IV, and V regarding the place and activities of creatures in the planes of Eberron (personally, I feel the value of the information is uneven.)

In other words, decide first how the planes and their inhabitants interact as a system before trying to focus on one or more individual planes. An example of how deciding just one question one way or another might lead down completely different paths could be found in answering this question: should we retain the tanar'ri and baatezu types, and if so, what do they mean for the creatures in question?

Lastly, while it might be tempting to try to decide that outsiders and other planar inhabitants pretty much just keep to themselves, large and small scale planar interactions with the Prime Material, specifically Eberron, are intergral to the fabric of the setting (kalashtar & quori, daelkyr, elemental binding, etc., etc.) Whether or not this applies between respective outer planes might be another matter (though MM III, IV, and V seem to assume there is some, if not frequent, travel between the outer planes.)

It was easier to do this with the DM houses, since there was already some information on these similar questions (such as the fact that Tharashk and Deneith were rivals in the mercenary market). But there's comparatively very little information on these issues in the Eberron sourcebooks.

08-15-07, 05:26 PM There was a similar thread a few years back. The Homebrew Eberron Planar Manual (http://forums.gleemax.com/wotc_archive/index.php/t-472278) (in the forum archives). I think it was a mild success, considering how these sorts of projects often don't get past page 1. Anyway, I know I'd be interested in this current project.

It might need to happen sooner rather than later given the news about 4e. I have a feeling Eberron might be on the back burner for a bit while they relaunch the new edition. I've also gleaned some bits about taking care of 4e Forgotten Realms before getting to other settings.
