For my upcoming Eberron game, I'm working on an NPC whom I am *hoping* will end up as a continuing thorn in my PCs sides...

(This, of course, means that they'll kill him within seconds of their first encounter. Still and all, I live in hope.)

...and I need a wee bit of help with creating him.

A halfling, he's going to be a bandit by trade, and a Rogue/Scout by class. If he lives long enough, he's going to end up as a Halfling Outrider.

Thing is, I want him to ride a pterodactyl -- or at least SOME kind of flying dinosaur. I'm very fond of the image of his diving from atop the speeding Lightning Rail and onto the back of his mount, y'see.

Are there feats for characters who specialize in riding flying mounts? Or are there special requirements for a prospective pterodactyl rider?

Have him fly a Glidewing, like the halfling fella on the cover of Whispers of the Vampire's Blade. Glidewing stats are in the Monster section in the back of the ECSB. As far as I know, you don't need any special feats to fly one. Just some ranks in Ride, and perhaps an exotic saddle. Mounted combat feats probably work about the same when used from a flying mount.

One thing to look out for: Unless he's a Ranger or Druid, his mount won't advance as he and the party do, and for a flying character that's a serious achilles' heel. If he's still riding a run-of-the-mill Glidewing by the time the party are about 5th level, he can be as competent and side-thorny as he likes, but killing him will be a simple matter of toasting his mount with a fireball or a couple of magic missiles.

Just increase the HD for it, and say that he found a better one, and once he goes Halfling OUtrider, it will increase, so yeah, but I would still go Ranger/Scout, or Rogue/Ranger, for more mouted goodies, also you could modify the Skylord from BoED to a less "Good" thing. Yes Glidewing will work, especially with extra HD. Good Luck, and I hope this guy lives.

Remember that Glidewings are Large animals, while most of the art seems to depict them as medium sized. Maybe I'll make a medium-sized version.

Given the 300 pound capacity a glidewing can fly with, I see it as more of a "bomber" than a "fighter," at least if ridden by halflings. It can easily carry 4 halflings; one pilot, and three archers/bombers (dropping rocks, alchemical weapons, fun stuff like that).
