Forge of the Mindslayers.. [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-17-07, 12:47 PM Well, I just finished the latest book, in the blade of flame series, and I have to say, I am very impressed. The story was compelling, and well thought out. Has anyone else read this, and what are your thoughts on it.

03-17-07, 06:53 PM I think I'm going to get into this series. After finishing The Dreaming Dark and The Dragon Below, I need something new to read, so I was going to pick one up at the bookstore the other day... and to be honest I wasn't sure which to get into.

I've since read sample chapters and I think I'm leaning towards this series.

03-17-07, 10:45 PM I haven't finished the novel, currently I'm at (what I assume is the first) confrontation between our heroes and Solus, on the docks.

I'm conflicted about this series. I want to like it I really really do. The short story from the Tales of the Last War that introduced us to the two main players of this trilogy was probably my favorite in Tales...

The characters are great and generally I like the storyline, and while my problem with the ending of the first novel is documented on a thread on the subject floating somewhere around here I find myself unhappy with another aspect of this series.

The combat scenes. Its the combat scenes that get me. I like the characters and the plot but the combat scenes are rediculous.

The characters, particularly Diran, seem capable of performing near godlike actions. The combat isn't just heroically pulpy unrealistic (like say Indiana Jones) but downright silly.

Diran and Ghaji don't just kill but SLAUGHTER an entire ship full of professional privateers, with nothing but a broken bottle.

What the :rant:

These privateers are professional soldiers in the employ of a Lhazaarite Baron, they are fully armed, and on their own ship... and Diran and Ghanji slaughter them with nothing but a broken bottle and glass shards from a broken bottle.

What in the name of Khyber? What are they epic level? Even if these guys were first level warriors, killing three in one round by throwing shards from a broken wine bottle?

No, nono, no. Just no.

I like the characters and I like the exploration of their backstories, particularly Ghaji's backstory.... but every time a combat scene comes up I cringe, because it just defies any incling of Eberron as a low level world.

Shards of glass... honestly.
