I was wondering if one of my PC's would beat up the overseer at the Tain Foundry...but they did it. The monk with assistance from the barbarian. Then when the guards showed up they managed to do an amazing bluff (rolled a 20) and suckered the guards into the office to help the overseer who 'collapsed suddenly! really! forget about the pulpy look his face has!'...and then beat them up too. They did it all with non-lethal damage though.

So now I'm trying to figure out the ramifications of this...I know that if they did it to someone of House Cannith, they'd be sending assassins after him, but to what depths would the Tain family go? How important is this overseer to them?

I have the Sharn book on order from Chapters...so I might have to wait a week before getting a better idea.

Well, the Tain family goes all the way back to the founding of modern sharn. They've invested a lot of money in the city, and are quite powerful.

I think they've maybe made an enemy that could hinder them for the rest of their careers.

If the party is ever in trouble with the watch, perhaps someone could hire a few lawyers to see they get sent to prison for a while?
Or maybe even subtler poisoning of their names in high society. See how those jobs from the upper crust dry up when word gets round you beat up one of the sons of the Tain family. It just wouldn't do to have such lower class thugs wandering around.

Oh, and the spoiler tags is <SPOILER> and </SPOILER>, only with square brackets.

They beat up the city guards?

I'd say they'll be in big trouble from that unless they're willing to cough up some big bribes.

This is a subject that has come up elsewhere - you may want to do a search on "Tain". Provided that they didn't damage the foundry, kill anyone, or steal anything, I don't think that you're talking about anything on the level of assassination. With that said, yes, they've just insulted one of the most powerful families in Sharn, and it may be appropriate to teach them that there are things you just don't do in the big city.

There is also the fact that they are adventurers. So, Lady ir'Tain will have the beating of her foreman investigated and find out about them. What I would do is have them summoned to the manor -- either openly, or say, poison their drinks in a tavern and have them wake up in the manor -- where Lady ir'Tain says something to the effect of "I'm sure you didn't mean to beat up one of my faithful servants; you can either do a favor for me to make up for your mistake, or we can part as enemies." At that point, they actually have a chance to gain the ir'Tains as a patron -- and if they choose to insult her and/or refuse her offer, well, now they do have an enemy.

But I'd give the PCs a chance to learn from the mistake and make it a positive. One chance.

And Nick, I believe these are the foundry guards. Beating up the Watch would get you an entirely different set of enemies...

Could one try something like Last Man Standing or A Fist Full of Dollars or Yojimbo, wherein after a swift demonstration of our heros prowess all sorts of opposing factions try to recruit the obvious new talent, and PCs find themselves wallowing in oppertunities to play everyone off against each other?

Theres probably some good gangster movies about people starting new crime syndicates - first shoeshine boys start offering their services, then stuff happens then they are sitting on the board angling to be the new boss of bosses.

The you segway in to a rip off of The Godfather, or possibly The Road To Perdition, in which our lads find they have offended their own best hitman, who is like level 25.

(A more traditional way to avoid such problems might be to rule that the big players subcontract out most of the day to day running of things - so you have to go through a whole bunch of Sub Minions before you do any damage that is actually the problem of Elminster.

Like, you arn't beating up Al Capone's boys, you are beating up Bud Nooneskis' crew, who run booze across the boarder for Ernest Slightlymoreimportantman who works for Al and who wont care about a little damage unless Bud has such a problem he can't keep up the royalties, and even then hes more likly to try to hire the PCs instead of having them whacked, which at least gives you more time to distract people with a dungeon.)

dont streach your creativity just do what everyone else does and send assassins after the players, works for everyone else, so should do just fine

Huh? Why the heck wouldn't I take this as an opportunity to stretch my creativity?

Besides, assassins are a) too easy, b) an over-reaction, at least initially. They beat up an over-seer and a few guards. They didn't kill them. They didn't steal anything (although they thought about it). They didn't damage anything.

And as Keith says, Lady ir'Tain has some...problems...she needs solved. Normally I have to _work_ for motivations for the PC's to do something (usually money).
