The finalist in Wizards' 2002 Fantasy Setting Search, Eberron is a cinematic world of pulp/noir action, adventure, and intrigue. In this, his sixth installment, Wizards insider Mat Smith provides excerpts from the Monsters chapter detailing four of the formidable creatures your PCs might encounter -- and wish they hadn't. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/eb/20040511a Enjoy MJ  |
| JohnnyONeal05-11-04, 10:10 PM | Thanks! Another great update. |
| Andre La Roche05-11-04, 10:37 PM | Looks like we also have confirmation that Eberron, Siberys and Khyber all have worshippers as the dolgaunts are listed as having clerics dedicated to the "Dragon Below." |
| Teron Gorefiend05-11-04, 10:46 PM | Is that dinosaur a made-up species? The name seems odd and I don't recognize it, and I do know a decent amount (though I'm by no means an expert). Then again, I'm tired and possibly not thinking straight. I've already forgotten what the name was and only remember that it didn't look right, or something. I'll go to bed now... Anyway, aside from that minor detail, I just want to say that those monsters are great. The crab is especially cool. And I like what's been done with aberrations in general in the setting. |
| Hardhead05-11-04, 11:00 PM | I didn't turn up a single hit when googling for it, so I assume it's made up. But, the pictures looked like the halflings were riding deinonychuses (deinonyches? deinonychi?), so my guess is that the fastieth is to the deinonychus as the dog is to the wolf. A domesticated version. |
| Mad Miso05-11-04, 11:00 PM | I'll give it 4 for 4. All of the monsters are quite interesting in their own way. Can you imagine facing a warforged titan on the battlefield? For the average soldier, engaging the thing is more or less suicide. The crab thing is just nasty, I love it. |
| stone_dog05-12-04, 02:20 AM | The Titan is just... just wrong! 50' speed? +32 jump?! 15' reach?!? Run away!!! |
| The White Sorcerer05-12-04, 04:45 AM | Originally posted by stone_dog Run away!!! Run away? From a warforged titan? No way! As you said yourself: -Speed 50 ft.=It'll outrun any core race. -Reach 15 ft.=It doesn't even need to be next to you to catch you. -Jump +32=It can just jump up and land on you. Splat! More like teleport away. |

The thing is truly a fearsome opponent, the combination of speed, lethality, and resilience in a nice package. The only thing I would add is some sort of missile weapon. |

| Mad Miso05-12-04, 10:34 AM | I'm not sure what kind of missle you'd add....unless it was some sort of magical ability. Them things are scary though, no question. The speed is really unexpected. Even a high-level monk would have a hard time fleeing a titan successfully. And to think those beasts were used on the battlefield........I'm seeing where a lot of those famous heroes lost their lives right there. Titans would be amazing on the battlefield. I mean, a battalion Hill Giants could kill a lot of guys, but you could still stick em full of arrows or overwhelm them with numbers. It would be very difficult for anything short of a high-level champion to even scratch a Titan. Truly a medievel tank equivelent. You either bring out your own Titan, or you go home. Those tentacle monsters are pretty nifty too, although I'll have to try seeing what adding a few monk levels does for the monster. a Monster Monk with con-damage tentacles and stun attack backed by chokers trying to, eh, choke you, would be pretty irritating. |
| Joni-san05-12-04, 10:43 AM | My players should never meet these beasts :schemes: I wonder if anybody noticed the the staff the 'forged beside the Titan had? Could it have any special significance? These creatures are truly impressive. I can't wait to use them Does anybody have comments on the new metal Byeshk? Good? Bad? I haven't got me PHB/DMG on me and I'm too lazy to get them. |
| Ashrem Bayle05-12-04, 10:48 AM | I really like all four of them. |
| Eric the Head05-12-04, 11:15 AM | Originally posted by Joni-san Does anybody have comments on the new metal Byeshk? Good? Bad? I haven't got me PHB/DMG on me and I'm too lazy to get them. It looks to me like weapons made from byeshk (which, btw, is one of the most annoying names I've ever encountered in fantasy) are only really useful against monsters from Xoriat. So whether it's good or bad depends entirely on what sort of monsters your PCs can expect to be going up against. |
| Knight Otu05-12-04, 01:30 PM | Originally posted by Steven Snyder The only thing I would add is some sort of missile weapon. With their speed and reach, aren't they effectively a missile weapon already? :D Hmmm, these titans have an Int score of 3. Despite what the article says, that is sufficient to add character levels..... The Dolgaunt Organization line mentions Dolgrims, and the numbers suggest that these are more common - goblins that underwent a similar processs? |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast05-12-04, 02:03 PM | Another great article :) Now we know what the monster in this picture is: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/eberron/ebb_20040217_battle_scene.jpg And that must meen that the background is of the Mournlands, though I think a lot of people had assumed that already. Still, it seems to show how dangerous the area really is. |
| WizO_TheCheat05-12-04, 03:21 PM | These puppies get 4 out of 4 crisper drawers and probably even mute button privileges. I am SO setting aside some pencil shavings for this book. :D |

| jedi818705-12-04, 06:02 PM | I love them all. The crab is my new favorite monster of all time. I will put it in any campaign I ever run from now on. And the dinosaur gave me a good Eberron specific animal compaion for my halflinf druid(I'm assuming that they would be 1st level anicoms) |
| WizO_TheCheat05-12-04, 10:48 PM | Originally posted by Ashrem Bayle :uh-huh: You know, if I break one poster's mind a day I consider my job done. I really do like all of them. Other than the dinosaur they each have just enough mix of challenge and straight-up creepiness to mess with your PC's heads. That and they're things my players won't instantly recognize. |
| DwelleroftheDeep05-13-04, 10:51 AM | I...Love...the...titan... |
| The Morninglord05-14-04, 04:14 PM | Tentacle whip Anyone knows what this special ability of the Dolgaunt do? |
| stone_dog05-14-04, 09:00 PM | I am guessing it is just the 10' reach to the tentacle attack myself. |
