| Jack_Rains12-27-05, 01:31 PM | I just bought the Dragon Compendium and was looking at the Sha'ir class and it got me thinking. Where are the genies in Eberron? I was thinking that maybe they had ties somewhere in the world being that they are extremely powerful creatures and some of them love to meddle. I thought they fit well with the gnomes or maybe in Xen'drik where elemental binding is used. I'm just not sure where they fit. Any ideas? |

| Quicksilver01-04-06, 10:50 PM | Well, MoE says that elemental binding magic was stolen by the gnomes from the drow in Xendrik. We can assume that the drow learnt it from the giants, or this could be a good place for genies to enter into the equation. That's good for history, but where can we put them in contemporary Khorvaire? Genies have an arabic, desert flavour, so I favour putting them in the Blade Desert with the Valenar elves. The Valenar elves also have access to summoning magic and genies seem eminently summonable beings (eg. "I summon the djinni of the ring/ the efreeti of the lamp/ the marid of the waters"). It wouldn't be in the power of every warband to summon or befriend a genie, but imagine the effect if one did: "Huh, the Valenar are back to ride around our fort again, ho-hum. What's that on the horizon? Early in the season for strong winds isn't it?" <Djinn arrives> Also, if the genies really are the creators of elemental binding magic, what do they think of airships, or the lightning rail? |
| jesterjeff01-04-06, 11:16 PM | well here's a possibly foolish question. Where'd you find a 3.5 version of the 2nd edition Sha'ir? I'm asking because I don't recognize any Dragon Compendium. |
| Romulus LoneWolf01-04-06, 11:46 PM | I think that something to remember is you don't have to play the Efreeti and the Djinni in a "Tales of a 1'001 nights" fashion, especially in Eberron. You could just treat them as highly magical semi-elemental beings. One thing I'm keeping in mind is that there's no real reason for the Efreeti and the Djinni to actually be at war with each other, as they dwell on completly seperate planes with little contact.. |

| jesterjeff01-05-06, 09:54 AM | now where'd I place that damned credit card? |
| OzyBurrfoot01-05-06, 02:43 PM | So is this just a collected source of stuff from Dragon Magazines? Was the Shi'ar presented in an issue of Dragon? |

In DnD they live on seperate planes and are at war. Djinni live on the Plane of Air and Efreeti live on the Plane of Fire. |

Yeah, but in the regular DnD cosmology, the planes feel more like neighborhoods then entirely different universes. In Eberron, planar travel seems a lot more difficult. |
| ydirbut01-05-06, 10:09 PM | Dude, there's nothing that says that they have to stay the same as they are in base D & D. This is Eberron, so if anything, it should be different. I'm thinking Sarlona? |

Ah, but why would you waste good fluff that way? We're making suggestions on the uses for genies in Eberron, aren't we? As for the war, why not use that as well? Say that when the elves made deals for elemental magic, the Aernal/Valenar elves dealt with the djinn and the drow with the efreet. Their enmity for each other prevents working for the same side. An efreeti ally would make a great off-screen threat for a drow tribe in Xendrik to call on. If the characters are high enough level, they can fight it, if not, they know not to stomp the drow. On the other side of the coin, I can see a djinni ally of a Valenar warband urging them to attack the lightning rail, or a grounded airship, because he thought they misused the elemental binding techniques. I see the jann wandering the Blade Desert and Talenta Plains, trading and working with the Valenar elves and Talenta halflings. Alternatively, if you want a novel way for high magic to get into the campaign, have the Zilargo gnomes capture a noble djinni with their elemental binding magic and gain the 3 wishes. What would they do? |
