Knowing that there's nothing like experiencing a campaign setting through immersion in a story rather than through reading the ECS, I've decided to bring my players into Eberron with absolutely no idea of what to expect.

This way, as both players and characters, they'll be experiencing Eberron new for the first time.

I intend to start the characters as 1st level in a homegrown setting and then bring them to Eberron right around the time they reach second level.

Some ideas for how the party might get from where they currently are to Eberron?

I've always like the "emerged from the inky shadows of a dimly lit Quonset hut" but that's just me. ;)

There is always 'it's just a dream' scare them with the horrors of the realm of dreams only to awaken in world that is not their own and no good way back. Place them in the Mournland just after the day of Mourning (or when ever) just to mess with their heads.

That's two.

Ask them to do out their characters with everything filled in except race...

Then they all awake together in a dimly lit lab of a Cannith artificer... a party of brand new shiny warforged with no knowledge of the world!

The Plane of Shadow is a common cross-dimensional gateway. Perhaps a scion of House Vol is hiding in the Plane of Shadow in some unspeakable necromantic vehicle. The PCs could either be asked aboard, kidnapped, or the machine could crash nearby. If the PCs are involved by design, then perhaps something about one of the characters is unique. Maybe someone from the House of Vol had been to their home plane before, and one of the characters is the only fertile member of the House still left alive. The character doesn't need to know this, of course. It could be the character's great-great-great-great-great-grand mother, and perhaps the marks don't develop when beyond the Eberronian cosmology.

With all this action on the Plane of Shadow, the Houses of Shadow might have some things to discuss with the characters when they arrive.... Maybe a member of one of the Houses arranged for some of the Vol to hide in the plane.

If I run a group in Eberron, I'm going to start them on the outskirts of Cyre, on the last day of the Last War. Welcome them in with a bang, so to speak. :D

I really like the idea of them waking up as shinny new warforged. However if they were it most likely be the work of Merrix 'd Cannith and they can like all the illegeal warforges he makes be set free or sold as mercenaries, and retreive the schemmas for him in thanks for getting the gift of life.

My personal idea involves your character finding a cube in a tower after they defeat a bad wizard, which they of course don't know if the cubic gate, which is destroyed upon them reaching Eberron. Thus the onyl way to return to thier real home is to fix the artifact, which modivates the plot.

You could also have them simply get kidnapped by a rouge Aberrition, and have the Abirition/Illithid dump them into Eberron. thus they can learn of Byshek and kill aberitions =D

Two words:

Planar Conjunction.

Eberron is tailor-made for this. The ECSB already indicates that particular stresses can throw entire planes off-course; just have your homeworld "crash" into Eberron. Not only will it get your PCs there right quick, but it'll create loads of adventure hooks.

When I was tempted to run my "Planet of the Orcs," game I was going to have the party hired by a wizard who was doing experiments with his dimensional spells. He wants them to do the exploring after he opens up a tunnel to a new world.

He said that they could get back, really he did.

"Get you stinking green paws off me, you damn dirty Orc!" That story would be PERFECT for a Middle-Earth game. :D I can even think of a statue or two the PCs could find sticking out of the water. ;)

You mean those towering statues of kings from the past that strider was swoning over as they traveled down the lake in the first book/movie.

Marshal, Will, and Holly, on a routine expedition,
then the greatest earthquake, ever known,
high upon the rapids, struck their tiny raft,
and sent them all a thousand feet below!

To the Laaaaand ooof Eberron -on -on!

I can see this one.
On Xen'Drik
Evil Yaun-Ti sleeping in the remains of old buildings.
Pylons that have a table of dragonshards, opening gates to other pylons or even other worlds, depending on the order of which shard is touched.
Befriending fuzzy prehistoric humans, name the little one Cha-ca.
In time, uncle Jack come looking for you....

Am I showing my age?

(and no, I did't watch the one with the land rover)

I did the same to my PCs as you are planning, and I did it through the infinite staircase. They were trying a few door on it and eventually got locked out, tumbling into Breland by way of a dungeon. They left the dungeon, found a trade road, waited for a cart to come by. The cart owner asked if they needed a ride, even offered gold for a safe escort to Wroat.

They killed the cart owner, stole his cart and ID and rode to Wroat of their own accord. They'll fit in perfectly.
