| Ohtar Turinson11-18-06, 12:19 AM | I was considering putting a stereotypical "gift of the Traveler" into my game in the not so distant future, and then it struck me that I have no good ideas on how to do this. Cursed item? I've done this already, and I'd rather not do something so blatent for at least another year... the party is currently on a quest to destroy a cursed weapon. It'd have to be something much more double edged than I've been able to think of. Item that assorted power groups want? Again, I've done it before, and it doesn't seem like the right style for the Traveler. Anyone got any suggestions? |

| Foxboy200011-18-06, 12:41 AM | Well, let's see... there's always the insane fun of a hard-to-get-out-of arranged marriage. Nothing like finding out that the possessor of such and such a kick-[censored] legacy item is destined to be wed to the Big Bad's scary lieutenant... Or the doodad that you're given is the key to unleash an extraplanar entity that decides you're fun to hang around... too bad the entity is not something you'd WANT hanging around... | Uratoh11-18-06, 03:47 AM | The traveller didnt give it to em, but my PCs currently have a sword theyre starting to wish they didnt. It's a +3 Flaming Burst admantine greatsword. Nice weapon. Problem is, Droaam considers it a national treasure, and theyre willing to burn western breland to get it...also, the gnomes of zilargo have learned of its existance, and as it's an elemental binding weapon dating back to the giant/quori war, it's proof they didnt invent the technique... |
| Shady31411-18-06, 04:18 AM | An Orien Dragonmark. I see his gifts as being rather unconventional. And the dragonmark of passage would fit him best I imagine. Or whatever mark is appropriate for the race. Failing that an ordinary item makes for a good twist. "Here's a lucky coin. Guard it with your life and you will experience a great success." But it's the old give them confidence trick. ;) |

| Bluebrush11-18-06, 09:46 AM | Maybe the gift could be information which, when acted upon, may have unforseen consequences. Alternatively, maybe a message that brings doubt instead of certainty. If you really want to be subtle, incredible luck ("Phew! Good thing that bridge collapsed just after us before the rampaging goblin army caught up with us!") that turns sour. ("Wait, so the Goblin Warchief was carrying the artefact needed to save the world?") |

| Ohtar Turinson11-18-06, 01:31 PM | After sleeping on it and then browsing through the PHB2 this morning looking for varients to use for NPCs I came across the "rebuilding" section. I'm going to have a strange traveler give them information about a hard to reach place which could potentially rebuild a character by effectively allowing them to change the personal choices they've made in their life (though without reprecussions like time travel would have. I don't need that kind of headache.) The problem is that they have only very limited control over exactly what what happens other than that. So character class and ranks and such are willingly rebuilt under the player's control, but the remainder is left to dice to decide. I suspect that at least one player will subject their character to this once they hear about it, even with the risks that accompany it. Obviously, the idea needs a bit of fine tuning (and maybe even coarse tuning) but I think that's what I'm going to do with this. |

| Ellorin11-20-06, 04:31 AM | Little kid: Hey mister wanna play a game? Ha! Nice one! I should mention that the incident will take place on the tallest peak of the land they will be in 4 days. Our cleric of the traveler made some strange dealings with extraplanar followers of him and this is what came out... (The fact that they really angered a member of the Chamber through those dealings was pure coincidence, of course.) |

And that's it.... watch the PCs FREAK out... alternatively "There is no Chamber... fear the gnomes of Argonesson!!" |
