Goblin/Dhakaani Dictionary [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-14-05, 08:06 PM I'm making a character for a PBEM who specializes in studying ancient Dhakaani art and culture, so this is why it's useful to me. I've seen the "Ask Keith" threads and know that nothing official has been compiled. :( But have any of you had the time to compile your own? Just going through ECS alone I've picked out a little under a dozen words that are distinctly identifiable. If no one's collected a list, we could always start one here.

muul akuur dar?Now if only it would do backwards translations....that, and I was kind of hoping for something that actually used the real words as we know/find them.

10-14-05, 09:02 PM well, i can't help you there, besides, the words we already know are just product of the same criteria used in this web translator...sounding goblin-like. Unlike elven, there's not a real life goblin languaje.

what i meant was that there IS an elven languaje. Tolkien created an entire languaje that you can learn and have conversations in it...a friend's girlfriend know elven, and it's really cool to have her around while playing an elf... i don't remember exactlly, but she had a character with the name "wind of autumn" but in elven.
However, nobody has bothered in creating a Goblin languaje with grammar rules and all the stuff. We just got an idea on what would it sound like.

However, Keith has obviously put some thought into at least creating a few words for it. I know there's got to be more hiding out in the novels and other products that I don't yet own... so in that case, I guess we'll have to compile this ourselves.

10-15-05, 03:42 AM I really like the translation tool Use it all the time. It would be cool if it could go the other way though. Anyway, here are some goblinoid words and their english equivalents. Correct me if I'm wrong on any of these folks.

dhakaan = goblinoid? or people? or emperor?
draal = city
duur = fallen (as in Duur'Shaarat)
ja = bright? (as in Ja'Shaarat)
kech = keeper
khesh = silent
lhesh = king
nasaar = night
shaarat = sword/blade
taarka = wolf/wolves
volaar = word

draguus -dragon
khaar - blood
mbar’ost - fortified house. (I'm guessing, based on the ancient names of Sharn, that "mbar" is fortified and "ost" is home.)

Also one I can't decipher word-by-word yet:
rhukaan taash - razor crown

Although again, if we go by the current standard, I think "rhukaan" is razor and "taash" is crown. (Might draal mean city, as in Rhukaan Draal?)

Draal is city, I got that one above ;). Hmmm... I'd actually go with Rhukaan meaning crown, especially since the Lhesh Haruuc named his city Rhukaan Draal. It just makes more sense for him to call it Crown City, than Razor City.

[Not sure about the other names there... they might be demonic in origin...]

I've always thought Shadukar sounded goblin as well, but not positive on this one.
