| old friend03-25-05, 10:50 AM | linkin park's breaking the habit  battle without honor or humanity(the kill bill themesong) :fight!: and kinda... blackmores night :tiphat: pleez let me know your ideas |
| law03-25-05, 11:37 AM | All the music the Blackmages make are great (the make most of the Final Fantacy game music). |
| ekomega03-25-05, 02:29 PM | I generally use videogame music (RPGs mostly). But I use a lot of remixes so that the players who are familiar with the game don't find it cheesy, or can't place the music as well. If they recognize it as Castlevania's "Evergreen" or something, it can really be lame. The S:CoT music is good, but not great. I'd recommend it. Classical music is neat, although possibly overdone if your players are familiar with it. The Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg is a favorite. Especially "Hall of the Mountain King" because what is more DnD than a story about a guy being forced to marry a troll bride and then escaping from troll mountain, killing a lot of trolls? If you need ideas for classical songs, and don't know any, just watch old cartoons. Also, I'd suggest a lot of European metal, especially Fantasy Metal. Blind Guardian's "Nightfall in Middle Earth" is good, although it specifically deals with The Silmarillion, so if your players pay attention to the lyrics it might ruin the mood. Other bands that I would recommend are Nightwish, Finntroll, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Yngwie Malmsteen (the non-lyrics songs are MUCH better), Demons & Wizards, Hammerfall... well, there are too many to name. Do a search for these bands and you will find loads of stuff. If you want music with lyrics, that is. |
| DarkWarriorKarg03-25-05, 03:24 PM | Just finished listening to the "Devil May Cry" soundtrack. Could be appropriate, depending on the scope of your game. Evanescense for generic background music, especially some of the more mournful tunes if the group is in the Mournlands. Kiss' Psycho Circus for involvement with House Tarkanan. "Godfather" music when involving the Boromars... :) |
| Androlphas03-25-05, 03:37 PM | Some of the more action-oriented pieces from the Waterworld Soundtrack are great for both air and sea ship battle scenes. The first track (theme song) makes for a good Xen'drik intro. |
| Save-vs-DM03-26-05, 07:07 AM | When I use music, it's be Region. Here's what I'm currently using. Aundair: Martin Simpson: Cool and Unusual (classical guitar) Breland: Zubot & Dawson: Tractor Parts: Further Adventures in Strang (instrumental) (Sharn: Cowboy Bebop: OST) Darguun: Lord of the Rings Soundtrack (selection of the Mordor tracks) Demon Wastes: Hellboy Soundtrack Droam: Lord of the Rings Soundtrack (selection of the Mordor tracks) Eldeen Reaches: Lothlorien: Lothlorien (celtic, instrumentals only) Karrnath: Johann Sebastian Bach: Toccatas and Fugues - Christopher Herrick, Organ Lhazaar Principalities: Pirates of the Carribean ST Mournland: Apocalyptica: Plays Metallica on Four Cellos Mror Holds: Thirteenth Warrior Soundtrack Q'Barra: Mummy Soundtrack Shadow Marches: Hand picked Zydaco cd (various artists, all instrumental) Talenta Plains: Dead Can Dance Thrane: Dance and Tunes for House Organ, Violin and Dulcimer: Jurg Neuenschwander, Johannes Utzinger, Christian Schwander Valenar: Gladiator Soundtrack Zilargo: Godfather Soundtrack Aerenal: Rasputina: Thanks for the Ether Xen'Drik: Cybertribe: Sacred Memories of the Future I also use a few DnD soundtracks at times. Midnight Syndicate did an excellent DnD sountrack The Shards of Eberron CD is pretty good Also, the Temple of Elemental Evil video game has the entire game soundtrack in MP3 form (which I thought was darn spiffy) that I use. Edit: And Blackmores Night is excellent! That's what I'm using Cheers, SvD |
| old friend03-26-05, 09:22 AM | finally, someone else who knows blackmores night :) |
| Chiba_Monkey03-26-05, 10:12 PM | Save-vs-DM, I bow to your extensive prep work you do for your game sessions. I do not typically have the time, resources, or pack mules necessary to set up that kind of list, or to bring my game books and a CD player all to one session. :tiphat: |
| Kaverael03-27-05, 01:43 AM | Metallica did an eerie version of the Star Wars Imperial Death March. |
| ekomega03-27-05, 11:59 AM | I can't believe I didn't mention Apocalyptica. I think they'd be perfect. I refrain from using the LOTR soundtrack because I know my PCs would recognize it and not enjoy it. Anyone else have that problem? I didn't mention Blackmore's Night because I still remember Blackmore's Rainbow. He's nothing without Dio anyway. Movie soundtracks never came to mind for me because you forget about them easily. That might be the key to success for my players, because they probably did too (except for LOTR and Star Wars or something). For a couple of games, when I was first trying music with the game, I made a CD with a different song for each event/area/encounter that the PCs would face. They really liked it and it certainly livened up the pace, but it took a lot of prep time, especially finding a good song that fit the mood of every section. I did this for WotVB. |
| strahd9904-07-05, 03:24 AM | The soundtrack for Interview with the Vampire works well at times but I must say that the Danzig song Not of this world works for a planar villian |
| Babel04-07-05, 03:30 AM | The entire Tom Waits album "Alice" not to mention almost all his other songs (over 15-20 albums) icludes blues, beatnic, eerie everything, songs about seedy locales, trouble women, cigarettes, smoke, illusions, and that long train ride to hell and back who needs metal when you have flavor |
| KathyNoland04-07-05, 08:21 AM | You could also use other original soundtracks as for example the ones from Conan and Gladiator. Both are instrumental and have very good pieces, but maybe some of them would be easy to recognise for your players... :) |
| tug300004-07-05, 11:56 AM | It seems like most everyone here sees the best choice of music as either metal or classical (but both fantasy based). But we've played a couple of times listening to jazz music, and I really think that they helps more with the mood. Especially guys like Coltrane, Sun Ra, and such where the improv and experimentalism is what it's all about. After all, Eberron encourages people to use improvisation in fighting, so why not in the music as well? I've got to agree with Babel that Tom Waits is pretty appropriate, but I think that while the album "Alice" would be great, I think that "The Black Rider" is even more fitting for Eberron. I would say that Nick Cave would be good as well, but I think that his lyrics might detract from gameplay. But maybe "The Good Son" or "Murder Ballads" would be good... Tug |
| Hardware Jedi04-07-05, 08:32 PM | The soundtrack for Interview with the Vampire works well at times but I must say that the Danzig song Not of this world works for a planar villian Speaking of Danzig, I recommend Glenn Danzig's Black Aria. It's completely insturmental and based off Paradise Lost. It's great for background mood. I've used a lot the Midnight Syndicate's stuff as well. The D&D soundtrack they made is cool, but I like their goth-ier stuff. |
| AskaniPhoenix04-08-05, 02:45 AM | What about the Sin City soundtrack? |
