So I'm sitting here listening to the Nickel Creek song "The Lighthouse's Tale" ... an interesting song about a lighthouse (of course), but told from the point of view of the lighthouse itself. In the tune, the lighthouse keeper's wife is killed in a shipwreck, and then the keeper throws himself off the top of the lighthouse in grief. The lighthouse is sad about the death of his keeper, but continues to do his job.

This got me thinking: what if a lighthouse was really alive and could care about the lives of the sailors it saved, and about it's keeper and his family ... until they tragically die.

Perhaps the lonely lighthouse, going a little insane, would begin to commemorate the death of his keeper each year by leading a ship to it's destruction on the rocks.

However, in what ways could a lighthouse be dangerous to people who aren't just sailing the waters near it? Certainly, it could summon other creatures (perhaps evil ones) to come and "care" for it.

What I'd like to do is have the PCs investigate the lighthouse after the wrecking of ships starts to get more frequent than once a year. Perhaps going to check on a prior band of explorers who went but didn't return....

In the early 80's, there was a made for TV movie entitled This House Possessed (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083192/) which should provide you with more than a few ideas.

A very creepy movie for it's time. Rather than give a synopsis of the plot, I've attached a hyperlink to the movie title.

The freakiest factor of the film is that it never explains why the house does what it does: comupters? ghosts? nada..

And that's what makes this movie pretty effective.

Hunt around your local movie rental places: it might be available in the Horror sections.
