I know a lot of us have recently obtained our copies of Forge of War, and I figured a thread about what we like so far might be fun.

I'm pretty keen on the idea of the flashback concept, especially since this book is late to the game. Such a transition can allow for one to inject aspects of specific events of the Last War into the existing campaign.

I also like the Ramathene Sword. I might drop it into Eyes of the Lich Queen once I get to that point in my campaign.

I haven't had much opportunity to read through the history, but I did get to scan through the section discussing the military forces of each nation. I like the idea of warmages, dread necromancers, knights, and duskblades having a definitive role in the Last War.

The book also touches on the other regions outside of the Five Nations as well as the mercenaries of Darguun and Droaam, which were very good reads.

Was there anything about how the fighting styles in Nine Swords were used in the Last War?

Boy I hope not. Just got FoW and have read the first few pages. I am so sick of reading about splatbooks I don't have in a setting book. If I want completely optional extra stuff I'll put it in myself.

According to the introduction, material from Tome of Battle was not included.

You can expect inclusion of material/rules mechanics from:

Heroes of Battle
Heroes of Horror
Complete Arcane
Complete Adventurer
Complate Mage
Complete Warrior
Magic Item Compendium
Miniatures Handbook
Monster Manual II
Monster Manual III
Player's Handbook II
Spell Compendium
Tome of Magic

More specifically, mechanics were pulled from PHII, MIC, and HoB, and the rest are just references, most of which offer substitutions (e.g. - an adept instead of a dread necromancer).

I don't know why they didn't include Weapons of Legacy in that list.

Typo, because there are two Weapons of Legacy in the book.

I really liked the magic item set (idea taken from MIC).
I mean, its a really nice set, not so much for giving to a PC, but to build an entire "gotta find 'em all" campaign around. Collect all the pieces of the Regalia of Galifar!

This is one thing that really stood out to me. Reminded me a little of Final Fantasy 8, with the main characters being pulled back in time spiritually to bear witness (and bestow power upon) some other characters from the past and their actions. I'll seriously use that in a future campaign.

The usage of duskblades & dread necromancers was pretty cool. Several small things in this book really set my imagination off, like the 'Woeforged.' I'm just really glad we finally got some definitive history for the immediate backdrop of the campaign setting.

Ah, yeah, and what about them Dread Marshals? Those seem pretty cool, too.
