In the Magic of Eberron there are two grafts, Treebark Carapace and Stony Plating, that say, "When implanted, your natural armor bonus to AC improves by 1. Creatures without natural armor have an effective natural armor bonus of +0."

Why would gainign a +1 natural armor give you a +0 bonus? I checked the DMG and the PHB but couldn't find any special rules other than that natural armor stacks with normal armor bonuses. Also, the Amulets of Natural Armor doesn't mention anything similar to these grafts either.

So, why do you get +0 from this graft if you didn't originally have natural armor? Doesn't this make these a horribly pointless graft to have and a complete waste of time?

It means that you have an effective +0 natural armour bonus before you apply the bonus from the graft.
In other words, creatures with no natural armour gain a +1 natural armour bonus.

That just seems horribly worded and redundant. Thanks for clearing it up :)

Not really, it says that it improves your natural armor by +1, then goes on to say that creatures that don't normally have natural armor count as having +0 for this graft. At least I didn't have any trouble following it when I first read it, maybe its just me.

Yeah it follows naturally enough but it does seem really redundant. If you have no natural armour score you're not going to suddenly believe you have an effective NA of 20 for the purpose of these grafts now are you?

I think they were trying to ensure the everyone understood that even character with no natural armour bonus (like all PHB races) could infact benefit from the feat at all

after all you can't improve something you don't have technically

Does this mean that people without any Natural Armor Bonus cannot make use of items that enhance NAB?

Like an Amulet of Natural Armor?

This is one of those things where I said to myself "I'm a reasonably smart guy, I know pretty much everything about the rules........uh Whuhaaaaaaah?"
