And I see Eberron as being rather far removed from Norse themes.

I see Eberron as being rather far removed from nazis and the Old Testament. And yet, Raiders of the Lost Ark is in the "Recommended Watching" list

09-25-04, 11:52 AM Well, the 13th Warrior is a "historical" retelling of Beowulf. So it's more Anglo than Norse. Since Beowulf is an ancestor of pretty much all heroic fiction in the west, a retelling of it is bound to strike some of the chords you'd expect to see in modern fantasy.

As for the Eberron connection, there's some culture collision and some "darkness." It's a cool swords-and-superstition movie, and Eberron aims for a cinematic feel, so take from it what you will.

I'd have to agree that Eaters of the Dead (13th warrior, whatever. I read the book first, and that's how I'll remember it) lends itself better to "normal" dnd than Eberron, but the cool thing with Eberron is that anything fits.

That said, if you want more movie/book inspiration that feels more "Eberron-y" try taking a look at the Hellboy and BPRD comics - or, in fact, comic books in general. Many of them capture a gritty and adventurous world in them, and Batman is first to mind.

Though while we're looking at Crichton books, I'd say that some of his other ones would work for Eberron games. Just replace "science" you find with Artifice. Heck, if I remembered the plot better, I'd suggest Airframe, but replacing the airliner with a passenger airship. Heck, now that sounds interesting to me even.

Sphere might work well - though characters won't really have access to being that much underwater (okay, along with my suggestion of a bound water elemental creating a submarine, maybe you could bind some to different "pieces" of an undersea habitat, thus making them resist the natural crushing power of the depths, and provide a place for visitors to live. Heck, elemental-bound armor might serve as scuba-suits for the characters). The sphere itself might be an artifact of Xoriat, or Dal Quar.

Congo is an even easier one to do, but it doesn't seem as... exciting. Maybe replace the apes with something that'll pique the characters' interest more... ancient Xen'Drik versions of the warforged perhaps? Stuck in a jungle valley deep in Xen'Drik with hundreds of bloodthirsty (primitive) warforged, who were set here to protect the Giants' Temples in the region perhaps.

Dinasaurs are too big a thing in Eberron to use Jurrassic Park, though if someone were to start breeding dinasaurs in mass quantities for the sake of entertainment off the coast of Breland... someone might get angry.

Timeline is another that just seems odd in Eberron, but of course, a wealthy and determined artificer perhaps can send the characters back in time with an Eldricht Machine to change one of the most majors battles in Cyre in the later years of the Last War. Seems okay.

Prey seems like a very easily translated one as well. Since the very late stages of the war (the last 2-3 years say) a private group has been experimenting with Swarms, trying to give them a viable military application beyond dumping them on your enemies from an airship. One of the characters' friends and allies with good people skills is mysteriously called away... and then reappears soon after, asking an artificer in the party to come along (and the rest of the party too, if they'd like) to help fix the machines they've been using. Chaos ensues.

Okay, that's a lot of ideas right there... and all from one author... no YOU'VE read too much Michael Chrighten (however you spell his name, I'm lazy).

Now I must return to finishing Stephen King's Dark Tower.
