I have just seen the Crimson Talisman Wartorn novel and on the inside is listed the two other Wartorn novels. The third novel is credited to James Wyatt and is this not the novel that was to be written by the winner of the Wartorn novel contest. I guess this is okay considering Keith Baker was a published game designer when he won the campaign world design contest.

I think the second novel, the Orb of Xoriat by Edward Bolme, is the winner of the open-call. I remeber the announcement of the winner a while back, and it wasn't James Wyatt.

Actually, the war torn series is a 4 book series.

The winner of the open call will be the 4th book.

The winner is a guy named Graeme Davis.
Ironically, Mr. Davis has worked with Keith Baker on other projects in the past.

I am not implying that it had any influence in the decision.
It was a surprise to Keith when Graeme won.
And as far as I know, the "judges" (a.k.a. editors) were completely unaware of any connection.

It had better be an aberrant mark...

Where are you finding a half-elf with the Mark of Passage mentioned, TWS?

I wasn't going to bring that up (that discussion of novels thing...) but now that it has... I read the novel. It's not purely decorative.

You can't tell us if you thought the novel was well-written. But you can certainly discuss anything that impacts the game world. How did the book address having a half-elf with a human dragonmark?

I figured, from the sample chapter, that the Dragonmark he had was either Aberrant or something very plot specific. It did mention that his powers were not impressive.

At first level, the Mark of Passage isn't very impressive; you only teleport ten feet. I think this is an honest case of misinterpretation. It's hardly the first time people have thought that hybrids could inherit the mark of either parent race. It's unfortunate to have this in such a central place, and I imagine some DMs will have to deal with players saying "HE'S a half-elf with the Mark of Passage." But by the rules, the only dragonmarks that a half-elf can possess are Storm or Detection. Whether or not the book says it's the case, Vaddi is some sort of miraculous exception, and does not represent a fundamental change to the rules.

Dude, he teleports.
"Anzar scowled as he deliberated. Vaddi knew what his father was thinking. The truth was that for some reason Vaddi’s powers were subdued. As a dragonmarked son of House Orien, he should have been able to wield a degree of magical skills, yet he could barely teleport."
I didn't say I knew how limited he was, just that the sample chapter mentions that his powers were not impressive. And I didn't see any place where he actually did teleport, barely or otherwise, in that chapter.

Later on he does.

I'd probably explain it as one of those rare powerful aberrant Marks that some people talk about...

I wouldn't. Aberrant marks don't duplicate the powers of pure marks. Look to the legends of Lord Tarkanan and the Lady of the Plague - they wielded incredible destructive power, not the abilities of the pure marks. And just on the basis of appearance, you wouldn't mistake an aberrant mark for a pure mark.

This may be some sort of bizarre fluke, but it's still a mark with the powers of the mark of Passage; I'd just consider it a weird miracle and leave it at that.

And maybe have some harsh words with the writer? I would.

I have not read the book, yet and I usually like to reserve judgement until I do however in this case I cant hold this back.

... One word response. ... "Lame!"

Unless the author 1. has a good explaination or works up a good one later in a second book that focuses on the charater more (IE Drizzt getting his own book after IceWind Dale Trilogy") or 2. Has decided to say this is either not a canon novel or has it in mind to change some of the very core rules of the setting (which I have a big problem w/), I have to same Lame.

... One word response. ... "Lame!"
One word response. ... "Mistake!"

People make them. Specifically, people make this mistake - I could reference threads on this board where people have read the ECS and concluded that half-elves can have human marks. I'm more concerned with whether it's a good story. If it is a mistake - something the author didn't notice, as opposed to something that intentionally goes against the standard ruling - it's unfortunate. But I'm more interested in the quality of the story. If it's a great novel, I can overlook the fact that the hero should have been human.

What do you expect WotC to do at this point? Put out errata on a novel? *shrug* Again, all I care about is whether it's a good story - and if it is, I'm not going to let one misunderstanding ruin it for me.

I agree with Hellcow...

And by the looks of things it is going to be one great adventure :) The book hasnt arrived here jet but with that big fight in the start and the House Orien involved...GREAT :)

I have Crimson Talisman on order, and I'll hold a real judgement until I've read the whole novel. Mistakes happen, and if its a good story it doesn't really matter.
I am a little disappointed in an error like this though, it is a rather fundamental concept in Eberron. Ah well, mistakes like this will happen, especially since Eberron is so new.

Considering how young the setting is, and how many unique qualities it has compared to "SRD" D&D, I think we ought to cut the guy some slack. Sure, there's other ways he could have gotten around it mechanically, but it didn't ruin the story for me. It's not the first time in an Eberron novel mistakes have been made. I'm far more unforgiving when it comes to standard D&D rules apparently being broken (like elves being affected by sleep spells) than I am about an Eberron-specific concept like a dragonmark.

Dont get me wrong. I will read the novel and enjoy the story I am sure. That one particular point will just rub me a bit wrong and I will move on. I am going to be purchasing the novel. All I was saying was that I hoped perhaps it would be explained in greater detail in a later novel. It is a fantasy novel so I expect it to go agianst the norm and one of the things that grabs a reader is when some thing "Appears" not to fit in w/ the rest of the setting. It makes for a good hero because well, hes diffrent. I just hope we can get some info on the origin and why this charater is diffrent etc.. I guess I came off a bit more harsh than I intended. This fact will not ruin the novel for me. Heck I will probably borrow alot of the NPC's and Places for my games ... So anyways I hope the novel does well and would like to see a second w/ that charater and a bit more explaination because origin books are fun.

I doubt we'll ever get an explanation, since I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts that we're dealing with a simple "honest mistake." I don't even think an explanation is necessary. A bloke wrote a story that happened to have a mistake in it. No big deal to me.

Well I have yet to get far enough for him to have an Orein mark, which he should not, but I've had the feeling that the author was going to mess that up, during the set up with the Orien stronghold it just all felt wrong,he was a half-elf and a good sailor, I was thinking mabye they ment Lyrander, but no it was Orien. So he has a human dragonmark, I'm even more considering returning the book now, it's really not that good so far anyway.

Its ok. Keith had misspelled words in his book and double texting but I didn't dwell on it.
The Half-elf clearly had the mark of shadow which he used to make himself a human with the mark of passage and when he went into the mournland the eerie green light made the mark permanent and when he shifted back to half-elf the mark remained in place of his mark of shadow.
Elementary!
But the moment I see a dog with the tail of a cat.....
Now get back to finding Star Trek miscontinuities and stop reading books.

Yes, it's an annoying mistake/flaw in the storyline. I've read the book - once was enough. It reminds me of the FR books..

Have thought maybe the Dragon Prophecy at work.
His mother was drawn to House of Orien by the Erethindel.
The artifact chooses who will carry it.
So why not say the Erethindel made this child for its or the Prophecy purpose.
