| Gryffydd02-23-08, 06:10 AM | I was going to DM a PbP at one time, but it never materialized, despite the fact that I thought it was the coolest idea ever. Most of my players were unfamiliar with Eberron, so that might have been part of it. Anyway, the concept was simple, the players would take the role of a small band of elite mercenaries who owned their own airship. They would basically be free spirits whose primary concern was making enough money to feed themselves and keep their airship flying. Naturally they'd be in a good position to make money as smugglers, and perhaps a little larceny now and then wouldn't hurt. The main thrust of the campaign would be the moral quandaries they would face about what they were willing to do to maintain their freedom and lifestyle, and of course they'd be drawn into greater political power struggles and have to make choices there as well... Yeah, I'm sure you've all figured out by now that this is inspired by a certain short-lived TV show and poorly received movie, and what the name of the airship would have been ;) It seemed like a good idea at the time! Seriously though, I can't help wondering if this has ever been run by another DM... Eberron's shades of grey (And well... The fact that it has airships) just seem to fit so well ;) |

| ChaoticGood03-05-08, 02:53 AM | Suggestion: don't allow any of the players to be the captain of the airship. One of the other players didn't take too well to my dragonmarked d'Lyrandar swashbuckler ordering him to not kill the now-unconscious misguided paladins, and decided to turn the considerable heft of his half-orc fighter against my relatively squishy half-elven frame. The result: no way to fly the ship, no reason for the paid crewman to stick around, no way to keep the party airborne... The idea of playing air pirates ended abruptly with that little move. |
| masshysteria03-05-08, 11:12 AM | Suggestion: don't allow any of the players to be the captain of the airship. This depends on your gaming group. In my group, any of the players could be captain and even if we disagreed it wouldn't wreck the game. Of course our captain would also listen to everyone else, so it probably wouldn't be all that bad. So, as a DM, know thy players! This may work or it may not. |
| Gryffydd03-06-08, 09:08 PM | Remember: A captain doesn't keep control of the ship by being the biggest badass. He keeps control by having everyone's respect. The Half-Orc can't splatter the squishy half-elf if the rest of the party is ready to blast the Half-Orc off the ship. ;) I mean, Jayne could probably beat up Mal in a stand up fight, but the rest of the crew wouldn't put up with it (Heck, some of them would love an excuse to space him...) so he can't make that kind of play. Besides Mal is sneakier (Memories of Jayne walking into a wrench to the face after trying to sell out some of his crewmates... lol) |
