So my party found following item as treasure after they defeated a Cadaver Collector (MMIII) in the Mournland:

Periapt of Wound Closure: This stone is bright red and dangles on a gold chain. The wearer of this periapt automatically becomes stable if his hit points drop to between –1 and –9 inclusive. The periapt doubles the wearer’s normal rate of healing or allows normal healing of wounds that would not do so normally. Hit point damage that involves bleeding is negated for the wearer of the periapt, but he is still susceptible to damage from bleeding that causes Constitution loss, such as that dealt by a wounding weapon.

Moderate conjuration; CL 10th; Craft Wondrous Item, heal; Price 15,000 gp.After reading through the item, they came up with an interesting question. Does this item allow you to heal naturally (or benefit from magical healing) in the Mournland? It does read, "The periapt doubles the wearer’s normal rate of healing or allows normal healing of wounds that would not do so normally." (emphasis mine)

Thoughts?

Well there might be a problem in that the item is base off the Heal spell which does not function. If I remember correctly it only referred to spells and natural healing not items.

My gut says that items based off of spells from the Healing sub-school shouldn't work. However I don't think I can find word for word backing on that. I keep my Mournland fairly tame by going with what's printed, no sub-school or natural. I think it fair that the ban extend to items base on the sub-school as well, but thats more house rule than RAW.

I don't think it would work since it "allows NORMAL healing" and there is no normal healing in the mournlands. This item is intended to allow wounds inflicted by a clay golem or the like to heal naturally. It is seriously underpriced if it allows healing at will in the Mournlands.

Well, to be fair, the price of the item has nothing to do with the Mournland or Eberron in general.

It isn't like every item in the SRD is priced against special circumstances that might occur in a specific campaign setting.

Also, the wording of the SRD is a little open to interpretation. Does it allow healing (as in normal healing with rest or fast healing) or does it allow healing (any and all effects that might restore HP, from resting to cure spells, etc)?

All that being said, while the "official" cost of the item might be only 15000 GP, I can see a hefty markup for House Cannith when selling these items to adventurers once it is known that the item allows healing in the mournland.

Quite true, although it shouldn't be a stretch to say that items utilizing Healing subschool magic shouldn't be able to function.

Between goodberries & the other workarounds described in 5N, I see no reason to make an exception for the PoWC just because the text in 5N does not specifically exclude items enhanced with the Healing subschool.

That's just me though, and without specifics, it'd be me making a house rule.

Hi,

i would never allow it to function in the Mournlands.
First of all, it uses the Heal spell to be created, a spell that won't work in the Mournlands. Its magic is from the conjuration school, which clearly points toward the conjuration (healing) subschool. Second, this magic item was designed long time before the Eberron setting was published, and its purpose was to heal other kinds of damage that won't heal normally.
So i clearly say no, it won't work. Spend your precious gold on other items that are more useful (even if you still want to go into the Mournlands).

Cheers
