| Pallis11-09-04, 03:34 PM | ...with this quick question: Does it, or has it been known, to snow in Sharn? I couldn't find any details in the CSB and bluffed my way through when asked the question. I'm wondering whether the constant rainfall from the manifest zone is affected by changes in temperature. Makes you wonder about the insurance costs for folk living in the upper levels once those bridges and walkways get frozen over... :schemes: |
| billseurer11-09-04, 05:11 PM | If you read about the climate in Breland in the ECS it is probably way too warm in Sharn to snow. |
| Sucros11-09-04, 05:22 PM | Freak weather, maybe. Mexico got a massive snowstorm a few years back. It should be that kind of event if you do it though. Something big, not just a frequent hazard, or people would have designed the walkways with rails and such. But I do like the idea. Makes me think of all sorts of Frostburn stuff I could throw at my PCs. If you wanted to use something other than freak weather, you could say Risia is coterminous, and this time, it's having serious effects of eberron, especially the manifest zone. |
| stone_dog11-09-04, 05:33 PM | Micro hook sans quality writing. -An eldritch machine using flawed magics from the ancient world of the giants placed in sharn by unknown forces seeking to freeze the city by bringing the raw power of Risia flowing across the spires. |
| Sucros11-09-04, 05:37 PM | Ooo... I like the Eldritch machine idea. Personally, I'd make someone build it on purpose. Has a good, pulpy feed to it. This whole Ice + Sharn idea is really fun. |
| Edymnion11-09-04, 05:46 PM | Seeing as how Sharn is right next to a tropical forest, I'd say no, it does not snow in Sharn. |
| ThanisKartaleon11-10-04, 03:28 AM | It may be next to a tropical forest, but it also stands what, 3 miles tall? The lower area would be quite warm (even without the Cogs), but the higher you went, the colder it would get. Note that the highest areas (Such as the Skyway) stand above the cloudline iirc and would not be affected if it did indeed snow. |

From the ECSB, page 143: In the south (of Breland), from Wroat to the Straits of Shargon, the weather ranges from hot and muggy to hot and rainy, with only occasional periods of war and dry. The city itself is about a mile high (as written in several places), which, in my opinion, in a tropical climate is not high enough to get snow. edit: But if you insist to do a snowy Sharnian adventure, I suggest you do it when Risia, the Plain of Ice is Coterminous (happens at midwinter once every five years). |
| Pallis11-10-04, 09:19 AM | Thanks for the views folks; I love the eldritch machine idea...I dunno - there's just something cool about the idea of a frozen Sharn that appeals to me. Expect something about the big freeze in a future issue of the KC...! |
| Peaceforged11-10-04, 12:41 PM | I live in Tucson, AZ in the middle of the desert, one of the hottest places in the nation. 2620 feet We have tropical warm monsoon rain (thunderstorm capitol of the world) all through the year. Peaking in Aug at 2.4 inch (average), and the lowest in may .2 (average) The temps range from 101.0 in July (av) to 39.4 in Dec (av). It snows/freezes on the ground at least once a year during the winter. But, Tucson is not a coastal city. I don't see it snowing in Sharn really, but I do see thunderstorms being a HUGE problem. I also like the idea of the eldrich machine being used to freeze the city. Or maybe a living spell (flight/ice storm?) |
