The outline I have for my character:
-Born in Cyre prior to he end of the war.
-Parents were managers of a magic shop, so there was some funding to send my character to Arcane Collage in Aundair when the two countries were allied again.
- spent four years at the academy... found a tomb on the Daggerspell Mage : Myth or Fact....
- before any research could be done my character became a prisoner because of the war, the kingdoms had a falling out....
-my parents had used up their funds for the Acadamy, so no ransome was going to be paid.
- while being imprisoned met up with another person who had heard of the Myths of the Daggerspells. A secret order hidden somewhere in the Eldeen Reaches. This fellow prisoner helped me and a few other prisoners escape...
- long story short I end up at the Order of the Daggerspells... and they trained me to be one of them....

So my question is this: I'm a fifth level wizard and second level theif, what spells should I choose? BUT I want it to follow some sort of progress based on his background. I want spells that reflect that he's studied at the Arcane College and later a two year crash course of the Daggerspell Mage... ]I also want to role-play using the spells to add flavour to the character. My basic (really basic) understanding of the rules, I think I could make up a straight combat mage..... If I wanted that, I would't have made up the Daggerspell Mage.

Help, Please

It's spelled thief, but you mean rogue.

It took you two years to get introduced into a PrC? That is a rather long time, I wouldnt call that a crash course. Does your DM use some type of houserule where you can only start at high level and you already need to be in any PrC you want to use?

Are you really wizard5/rogue2? Or are you wizard5/rogue2/DsM1?

How about roleplaying a wizard who knows what he is doing? :) (ie. dont discard something usefull without a very good reason.)

What's your starting wealth? (ie. how many extra spells can you afford to add to your spellbook.)

Some criticism and doubt is not an attack ... for instance me telling you that it's bad form to quote large posts wholesale to add a single line reply isnt an attack either :)

BTW, I was not saying he was playing a wizard who didnt know what he was doing ... he hadnt made any decisions on his spell list yet after all, I meant to suggest he could pick his spell list rationally (I assume he has a high int and all).

Yes your right.... :weep:

1) Wizard5/rogue1/DsM1 :D

2) access to a reasonable amount of wealth for 7th level character. :D

3) the background is a rough for the moment...

4) between 30-50 spells...in spell book.

5) Spell list that's what I'm trying to figure out.... That is why I posted, I am looking for suggestions that would reflect him studying in an Academy, during a time of war.... maybe a spell or two picked up on the lamb (scroll, other spell book, etc...)... spells that reflect time in the Order, and spells that would aid in surviving in the woods.... :banghead:

6) He live in cities for most of his life, and now he's more like Robbin Hood, sort of....

7)I do own most of the D&D books, if there is a book I don't have, I'm sure someone the group has it..... :ayyyy!:

8) Pinky's Brain, I do value your input...because you really did help me out in my last post... to bad the game folded before it started....

I would go with some touch spells as these are the types of spells you can cast through your daggers. Also, there are a few spells in the complete adventurer that you will enjoy namely, critical strike, distract assailant, insightful feint, bladeweave and daggerspell stance. Those spells all seem to have been made for the Daggerspell Mage class. Plus spells that enhance your fighting capabilities such as bulls strength and cat's grace. Those are just a quick few that my Daggerspell Mage has.

to bad the game folded before it started.... :bow:Which is probably for the best. Starting an Eberron game at 7th level? You'd have missed out on a good 90% of what this setting has to offer by doing that.

Start at level 1, maybe level 2, and you'll enjoy Eberron much better, because thats the way the entire setting was meant to be played. :)

We actually I started off at first level, and well... my charcter died. The DM allowed me to transfer over my EXP to my new character.... Hence the levels I stated when I origianlly posted.... The early levels were great. But everyone else is between 6 and 8th level... So, I thought about something new to play.... I like mages, and I like rogues... and I just recently discovered the Daggerspell Mage. But after talking to the DM about the backround he suggested trying to come up with spells that my character would have learned over the progress of his life....

Even though I like Mages I haven't played enough of them to pull out the subtleties for flavour with spells... the common ones I know more or less, the others, well.... that's why I posting. I'm looking for ideas to flesh my charcter's spell list. I haven't even picked any yet, cause I'm still brain storming. One the other player suggested posting on here. He thought some of you guys might have played a Daggerspell Mage or might have suggestions for spells....

Speaking of which I would like to thank you guys who have taken the time to read my posts and give me suggestions, I really appreciate this....

One more question, should I be focusing more on touch attacks, it's seems like an obvious choice.

I guess I'm just trying to stick to the flavour of the Daggerspell Mage and that compliments my character background..... :D

My two cents:

One of the things that makes Eberron different from other settings is that you have a newly introduced (to DnD) race, the warforged, who can be significant challenges for conventional fighters when properly played. You also have the possibility for having to deal with various types of undead. Last but not least, you have a wide variety of different types of non player characters that can couple a shapeshifting or limited shape shifting ability with at least some ability to read minds.

My recommendation would be that in addition to having some good touch attack spells, you also make sure that you have some ranged touch attack spells as well. I think that having the "Detect Thoughts" spell would be an excellent idea. "Command Undead" might also be a good spell to have in your spell book.

Sorry Pinky's Brain, I meant that you helped me with my last character as well, Shifter/Monk/Scout....

This charcter still needs to be worked on by this coming weekend....

So if anybody has any cool ideas or hints, I'm all ears... :D

Again, that you for all you who has taken the time to read these posts and even more thanks to those of you who posted suggestions :D

What history for the Daggerspell Guardians is your DM using? Is he going to have the organization or not? Will he be using the write up I posted on these boards? These would be things to consider when making a back history.

I've got a Daggerspell myself, though not set in Eberron, but in Faerun. My favorite was always Touch of Idiocy... but 'mageslayer' was part of the character concept.

The organization is in the Eldeen Reaches. They are loosely affiliated to the druids of the forest...Wardens of the Wood. :w00t:

Born and raised in Cyr. Keen interest, in magic. When Aundair and Cyr had another alliance your family found it possible to send you to learn at the Arcane Congress. Your studies were going well... You had found passages in dusty tombs on the myths of the Daggerspells.... Rumors of their location lay behind the great woods of Eldeen Reaches. Your studies came to an abrupt end when the treaties fell apart. Before you could return home you became a prisoner of war. Your family funds placed you in the Arcane Congress, there was no coin to pay for your ransom...

From marble studies filled with vast knowledge, to the cold stone dungeons filled with pain....

Eventually the wrong prisoner was thrown in with your lot.... this person, was able to help a few of you escape when he managed to find a way out of the dungeons. This person in particular was a thief (?). The lot of you were hounded by Kings men... Most of the escapees were captured or killed. You, however, manage to learn a few thing from you new found friend (read thief skills). You two were the only ones left... You taught the thief a thing or two a long the way. It looked grim with the King's men hours, days behind.... Only one of you could make, if the other distracted the hounds. You saw your "friend” palm the longest of the two sticks (making it the shorter of the two) and make it the shorter of the two. Thief "lost" meant that you still had a chance... a slim chance. The thief waited around for the hounds to catch up, it wouldn't be fair if they didn't get to chase the fox. Your escape led to new problems... Your flight ended you at the borders of the Eldeen Reaches. Well two thoughts occurred: 1) you probably would never get the chance to see if the myth was true about the Daggerspell Mage and 2) you'd have to cross a lot of unfriendly/hostile territory. Your newly acquired skills were basic at best. Steal some fruit or bread. Hide in shadows on a darken night. But they were no match for what you would have to do to pass through Aundair, Thrane or Karrnath... Hiding on board a ship heading to Cyr was a really big "If". So Eldeen Reaches became the best point for survival...

Well, after the 2nd week your thoughts started to shift to the thinking that sneaking back through Aundair was probably better than dying alone in the wilderness.... Just as you thought it couldn't get any more worst, it did. Something or things began to "test” you... Your basic knowledge of what you managed to learn from Your "thief" companion was severely tested. As well as your mage skills.

You were pushed past your endurance, and what ever that something was that pursued you these past days, made itself known. The sleek cat (panther/lynx) emerges from the woods. You last spell fail against its counter-spells? Wha... The cat shifts to that of the "Thief", the same one that helped you escaped..

The thief bends down gives you a hand up... “Welcome, you pass.”

“Pass?! Passed WHAT?!”

“Was it not you who whispered over those dusty pages "wouldn't that be something?" in reference to that of the tome which told the tales of the Daggerspells?”

“This was all a TEST?!?”

“No, not all. You being imprisoned, we had nothing to do with. The others were guilty and had to go back. You, on the other hand, have potential....”

The glammers hiding a path raise and you come to the monastery. The next two years of hard dedication, allowed you to join their ranks. You and another (your opposite) passed.

after the celebrations, you learned that Daggerspells walk the land doing their best to preserve the truth and help justice, in their own ways. You petitioned that a great deal of injustice lay back in our homeland. Your partner agreed to go with you. The two set off... You had the council blessings and their warnings. Never reveal your secrets (i.e. Daggerspells are to be kept secret).

Many adventures later, the two of you make it to Cyr. As was custom you other half left the night before to scout out a head, it was the last time you have seen the "Other". Since then you have done your best to help those around the borders, every now and then you try to make it into the Mournland... Attempts have failed, and you find yourself once again in Vathirond...

Looks good to me! Though there are a few more in the Complete Adventurer you should look at. Yeah I've posted on the boards before... it's a few pages back in the People and Places formum... I think... maybe I should learn how to post a link and add it to my sig... but yeah. The write up I did puts them in the Reaches as well and brings them into the world pretty well in my opinion. Anyway, I think you've got a pretty good base for a good character!

it is "tomes", not "tombs"

tome=book
Tombs=Grave, Crypt

unless he really found informations about the daggerspells inside some crypt, of course.
