BuddyL33 04-04-05, 12:02 PM	I am helping a friend out in the creation of a character. She is pretty set on playing an Artificer with the Mark of Making. The requirements of the campaign is that the character be a member of the Sharn Watch. I can think of several ways her character could be a Non-House member, therefore being able to be a member of the watch and still possess the Mark of Making. However, I am busy with work all day which is eating into my creative time and I am trying to think of how a House Cannith member could/would also be a member of the Sharn Watch, not just consigned to the Watch, but an actual member. Toss me some ideas of you have the time.
Siduakal 04-04-05, 12:17 PM	Excoriated from the house. Willingly left the house of their own accord. Foundling (IE: Not recognized in the house and is the illegitimate daughter of a member)
Dragom 04-04-05, 12:31 PM	Even recognized and marked members of houses have to make their way in the world. Don't bother unattaching the character from the family. Cannith can see the value of little Suzy growing up to be part of the Guard. They may not like and may be constantly offering her better jobs with better wages but they won't stop little Suzies choice. Stop working on how prevent things from interfering with her becomming a member of the watch and do the important thing. Figure out why she wants to work long thankless hours, risking her life doing things that the people she's trying to help will hate her for, for far too small a wage. Maybe she was saved, maybe she looked in longing from the drunk-tank one night as the guards laughed and made merry at their weekly poker game, maybe something horrible happened to her and she has vowed to do all she can to prevent it from happening to someone else. Maybe she questioned if her House really ever helped anyone and found she really wanted to help. Maybe she just developed a crush/case of hero worship as a small child to someone who was particularily attractive/impressive in his/her guard uniform. Did I help or did I leave you more confused?

Plus: She could be a Watch "locksmith" (Search & Disable Device) or the equivalent of an apprentice-technician or technician (depending on level) to create/care for various magical thingies the Watch uses (Feather Fall talismans, Eternal wands, pump-action crossbows...)

The DM should remember that simply because you're a member of a House doesn't mean you have a job for life: - Personal enemies in House Cannith prevent her from attaining more "respectable" employment. i.e: Which faction is she with? There's 3. If she didn't support Merrix, then hiding out in the watch is a good thing. - A spy for Merrix in the watch. - A spy for one of the other factions posing as a spy for Merrix in the watch. - Doesn't like the idea of sitting around in a mouldy, smelly lab. Prefers to be out "doing things". - Not Exoriated, but had a mentor who was. The political taint forces her to "lie low" for a while and avoid House-related activities. - Got caught is a criminal act. The House intervened, and instead of prison, the character "agrees" to "temporary" service in the watch (basically, abandoned there for political reasons). - Got caught making nice to another dragonmarked love interest. Unfortunately, not the same house. NOt exoriated, but joined the watch in order to hide from the political crap. Need more?

What if the character has to arrest a Cannith house-member? Or even investigate and thereby publicize Cannith affairs? It's not an easy one, but with some bending it might be done. Could the Sharn Watch-theme be adapted into a House Cannith personal watchguard? Maybe the character was a foundling, and manifested her mark only after joining the watch - and simply refuses to leave the watch? (yet is interesting enough for house Cannith to welcome her, maybe intent on getting her out of service later)

And even then, just House influence to get rid of an embarassment. - Arresting a House Cannith member? As a member of the most notoriously corrupt organization in Breland? Even if the character were honest, there's a RP element: Does the character keep faith with the house or with the watch? That's nota problem, that's an RP opportunity. - Foundling is an excellent suggestion. Esp as she may have a bad view of House Cannith. Perhaps she would have plans to infiltrate THEM.
PoeticJustice 04-04-05, 03:40 PM	Your artificer has her eyes on becoming a member of the Cannith Wand adepts and needs the 'street knowledge' that only tenure on the watch will give her. Eventually she may or may not have a change of heart on becomng a wand adept, but regardless will remain in the watch due to trusted friends.

Will she hide evidence? Will she hide evidence to a point? Will she take the time to tell uncle Steve he should buy a really fast horse and not come back? These aren't problems. Their bread and butter.
tug3000 04-04-05, 05:02 PM	I think that the idea of a foundling who develops her mark only after joining the Watch is the best idea to go with here. She joins the Watch simply as an expert artificer, and then really falls in love with the job, so when her mark develops, she knows that the House will send her off to do more "important" things. But, of course, what is important to her is her job on the force so she has to hide her mark from everyone. Could make for some really fun roleplaying that way. Tug
