| Nester of Erdrick07-01-04, 02:06 AM | So we're playin and so far the players have found out that a group of blackguards are using dolgaunts and setting them loose on the small town thier helping.(theres an entrance to Khyber below the town and the B.guards are driving them out)anyways. theres 3 PCs so i say what the heck why not 3 Dolgaunts. First problem no byeshk weapons. second problem no magic( Ranger,Psion,Rouge). ok. so the players attack and because of the DR they're doing about 1 to 3 points of damage a round, while a full attack round by the dolgaunts did an average of 6 to 9 points of dmg ,the rouge went first and used his action point to stabilize at -2hp, by the way all 3 dolgaunts are still alive the one fighting the Psion is still at full because he grappled the psion and drained him two consecutive rounds in a row, the Rangers is half dead but so is the ranger. In the end the ranger managed to kill his but by that time the psion was at -4(stabilized by his action point) so the two remaining dolgaunts doubleteamed him, he stabilized at -4 also. They woke up the next day in the church. This Thread was just to share my latest experience on eberron and to warn fellow DMs to not underestimate the monsters of the Dragon Between. |
| Ormus07-01-04, 02:14 AM | Heh, what level are your PCs? |
| Nester of Erdrick07-01-04, 02:18 AM | they're level 2. no i don't send inballanced challenges against my PCs, i like doin things by the book, i only get a little crazy if i know they can handle it, which i thought they could, which i was horribly wrong........oooops. |
| Ormus07-01-04, 02:21 AM | Yeah, sounds like they got pwnd. But that's okay, sometimes PCs need to learn to run away from some fights. Next time they come across a few Dolgaunts, it should be interesting to see how they handle it. |
| Dreamtide07-01-04, 02:24 AM | Well, there's probably a reason that Dolgaunts are CR2. Just one Dolgaunt should have been an appropriate challenge for your players. |
| Nester of Erdrick07-01-04, 02:27 AM | true...true..but it kind of set things back as part of the story they were supposed to win......i had to do a little impovising. |

Well, three Dolgaunts are EL5. That's 3 higher than the average party level. However, since you've only got 3 PCs it's a bit more difficult than that. But it's still within the range of 'very difficult' encounters. And according to the DMG 15% of the encounters in an average adventure should fall into that category. So it's actually okay - if the characters were rested before the encounter or had a chance to rest OR there was some way in which they could have changed the odds to their advantage by being clever, resourceful or tricky (thus resembling the category 'easy if handled properly', which should make up 20% of all encounters). |
| Hellcow07-01-04, 10:01 AM | As an idle reminder, the DR for Dolgrims should be byeshk or magic, not just byeshk. |
| St23aM07-01-04, 12:29 PM | And according to the DMG 15% of the encounters in an average adventure should fall into that category Sorry for sounding like a newb but, what part of the DMG handles that and also the information on how to figure out CR and EL and the diffrence. As well as how many encounters whould be in an adventure etc... "I know I should have read the DMG Cover to Cover rather than skiping around .... DOH!" |

| TarlSS07-01-04, 03:58 PM | Einnh. Sounds like poor intelligence gathering to me. If you encounter creatures you can barely touch, it's time to run away and rethink your strategy. In such a situation, I would setup a trap involving flaming arrows and torches and such. The best way to deal with creatures with DR (besides using the approriate weapon) is to use energy based attacks. At low levels, the namely involves fire. |
| Alathayn07-01-04, 05:38 PM | This shows us, that there is allways more to consider, than simply going by CR. 3 level 2 PC's vs 3 CR2 opponents is fair enough I did similar things once or twice (but usually one PC gets killed in such an encounter). But you always have to think about strength and weaknesses of both monsters and PC's. Had your group had a byeshk weapon and/or somebody to cast magic weapon, it would have been a lot easier. Your group laks a healer, such groups allways have to be handled very carefully, and a real tank, so you shouldn't wonder at all they got beaten up. |
| grey muse07-01-04, 07:16 PM | Ehh... 3 CR 2's against 3 level 2 PC's should mean roughly a 50/50 chance of the party winning or losing, assuming standard gear. Though for the record, if you had a psion, you did have some magic in the party -- it wasn't totally lacking. =) grey muse |
| Lord Zeb07-01-04, 11:35 PM | I've taken a liking to a CR / XP generator I downloaded thanks to one of my buddies' sending the link to me (lost the link sadly). 3 CR 2 vs 3 level 2 PCs is "very difficult, pull out all the stops" So, doable if the PCs are smart, but darn hard to pull off.... |

Yep, the calculator is great! Here's the link: Encounter EL & XP Calculator (http://arcady0.topcities.com/Encounter_Calculator.html) |
