Honorarium for Keith and Ellen? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm not super techno-savvy, so I thought I'd post this idea and see if someone who is might be willing to set it up.

I'm basically of the opinion that Keith Baker is a saint for spending as much time as he does on these boards answering questions and explaining the intricacies of his creation. Ellen as well for being so supportive and understanding. I'm also of the opinion that there's probably nothing we could do that would express our thanks enough.

However, I'm willing to try. I know there are many sites (like the Korranberg Chronicle, for instance) that allow people to make donations via PayPal to support the site and so forth. I was thinking that maybe we could set up such an account for Keith and his wife Ellen to thank him for all the time he spends chatting with us and her for being so understanding.

I would be more than willing to contribute to such an honorarium, not necessarily because I feel like Keith should be getting "paid" for the time he spends here (although he probably should, as the amount of material he's produced on these boards alone could probably create at least two more sourcebooks!), but just because I want to say THANKS in a big way.

Would anyone else be interested in contributing to such a fund, or willing to actually get it set up? We could advertise it on all the primary Eberron fan sites (The Eberron Journal, Korranberg Chronicle, etc.), the IRC room, and maybe even get a blurb on EN World so that we could spread the word to as many Eberron fans as possible.

I just think it would be a nice way for us as the fans to really say "Thank You - what you do for us means a lot, and we appreciate it."

Thoughts?

The Breland Ledger/Eberron Journal would certainly support this.

However, there are a few other ways to show Keith your thanks. You can purchase books at Amazon through his website (http://www.bossythecow.com). You could buy some of his non-WotC products, like the excellent Gloom (http://gamefest.com/product_info.php/products_id/1411). You can buy the novels he writes. And you can maintain your vocal support of him here to make sure that WotC keeps him involved on Eberron projects.

id be up for that, it wouldnt be much but it might get a box of chocolates once a year (the milka brand from Switzerland has lilac cows on the wrapping) which would let both of them know just how thankful we are for both of their support in this hobby.

I'm in, as long as it is made perfectly clear to everyone involved that this in no way obligates Keith to keep his presence in this community at the level he's already given us.

Keith has made it clear that even though he gets a portion of the proceeds from Amazon purchases through his site, he doesn't want to steal traffic from the brick-and-mortar stores that support our hobby.

Similarly, it should be clear that his participation here isn't fueled by a desire for our financial support. I want for him to feel emotionally and morally free to pursue his paying projects, even those that take him away from Eberron and our community.

That said, I'd happily donate some money to him for all the joy he's given me. Although, alternately, I'd suggest buying a copy of the ECSB or an Eberron supplement through his website or the local game store (not chain bookstore, mind you!) and donating it to a player you know who'd benefit from it. Give a work of beauty to a gamer who might otherwise not discover it, demonstrate to WotC and Hasbro that Eberron is a phenomenal product, and send a letter every six months to WotC demanding more Keith Baker products.

Paypal works too, though. :)

Edit: Or, barring the US$30-$40 sourcebook purchase, buy an Eberron novel to give to a gamer...

Needless to say, we really do appreciate the thought. I do try to make myself available on the boards, and that does take away a lot of time I could be devoting to professional work. But hey, I knew it wasn't a paying gig when I took it, so don't feel too worried about us. In the past, people have offered to send us game books we don't have or things like that, and in some ways I think that would be more fun; if there's a book you think is the best thing ever and you want to know how it might apply to Eberron (and we don't have it already), well, if you want to send us a copy that would be great... especially if you autographed it. We never get autographed stuff! Or hey, send us a picture of your gaming group playing Eberron. Knowing that people are enjoying the game is the most important thing to me.

If you do want to support us directly, well, keep an eye on Bossy the Cow. At some point in the future, when I get caught up on things (which, of course, I'll never do if I don't get off the message boards for a little while...) I have a few small things I may try to publish in PDF form. So if you want to support us, check one of those out when they appear. Hopefully they'll be worth your time!

Oh crap! Sorry Keith, I ordered RoE today, and completely forgot about doing it through your webpage! Damn, now I feel like I -do- owe you something. How about... a hug! I promise I won't steal your wallet! uh... unless you keep candy in it... or Warforged/Kalashtar feats.

:heehee If he's keeping fluffy/crunchy Eberron goodness in his wallet, I might have to mug him.

Respectfully, of course, and I would apologize. ;)
