House colors [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-30-06, 11:37 PM Okay, I know this may be a bad reference, but I think it will really clear up my question.

You know in Harry Potter, each House has individual colors that identify them? Well apart from the banners of each Dragonmark House, I was curious if each House had a pair of colors that represented them, and what they may be. I have been going through the list, but some of them are tough to decide on.

These are some of my ideas so far

House Tharashk –
House Lyrander – Dark blue and Light blue
House Sivis –
House Kundarak –
House Cannith –
House Medani –
House Deneith – Red and Black
House Vadalis – Green and Black
House Jorasco – Green and White
House Ghallandra –
House Orien – Blue and Gold
House Phiarlan –
House Thuranni –

Any ideas? Or changes?

01-31-06, 12:18 AM The "coat of arms" for each house in the ECS may give some more ideas. I'd suggest some myself, but I don't have my books handy.

01-31-06, 12:46 AM I had Cannith's primary color as navy when I ran my last campaign, and depening on rank, there were new additions and colors. Green and variations thereof were common (gorgon's breath), and black was reserved for higher ups in the guilds.

02-01-06, 02:10 AM Here's what I'd go with, using three colors instead of two. I'm also including some of my symbolic reasonings for the colors. (Where metalic pigments are unavailable or inappropriate, gold, silver and copper can be replaced by yellow, white (or grey), and orange, respectively.)

House Tharashk – Gold, Tan, Red (Weath, Pragmatism, Eberron Shards)

House Lyrander – Dark blue, Light blue, Black (Sea, Sky, Storm)

House Sivis – Red, Silver, Black (Eberron Shards, "Silver Tongues," Ink)

House Kundarak – Copper, Silver, Gold (Money)

House Cannith – Silver, Black, Green (Eyre [the Anvil Moon], Determination, Inspiration)

House Medani – Orange, Blue, Black (Warning, Knowledge [Aureon's Draconic color], Suspicion)

House Deneith – Purple, Yellow, Green (Nobility, Honor, Strength)

House Vadalis – Green, Dark Brown, Light Brown (Vitality, Family, Sincerity)

House Jorasco – Olive Green, Silver, Brown (Peace, Health, Practicality)

House Ghallanda – Dusky Pink, Green and Gold (Hospitality, Prosperity, Abundance)

House Orien – Lavender, White, Gold (Speed, Purity, Honor)

House Phiarlan – Red, Green, Black (Drama, Inspiration, Illusion)

House Thuranni – Green, Purple, Black (Inspiration, Misdirection, Shadows)

I really like some of your choices for the house colors. The symbolic ideas seem to work out very nicely. In fact, I just made myself a color chart with them. If I may make a couple of suggestions...

House Deneith: I would recommend either going for a very deep, serious purple and green or changing the green. I realized as I was coloring it, that purple, gold, and green are also Mardi Gras colors, which really doesn't fit with the more serious House Deneith. Purple, gold/yellow and black would work very nicely for Nobility, Honor, and Strength.

House Phiarlan: I would recommend not doing red and green together because of the strong Christmas association. If you're going for a sense of drama and the theatrical with this house, Red, Gold and Black would work nicely.

Overall, very nice ideas. A lot of things I probably wouldn't have thought of.

02-02-06, 05:04 AM Yes, Denieth's purple would be a deep, royal-type purple, almost bordering on dark blue. Like this: Purple Iris Flower (http://www.smugmug.com/community/flowers-flowers-and-more-flowers/keyword/purple%20iris/1/32911015). In contrast, Thurrani's purple is more grayish, like the displacer beast. I think Denieth's green could be a dark forest green. I do think black would be a good replacement; I just didn't find much of it in their coat of arms.

I don't really have a strong Red + Green = Christmas association (I don't know how, I live in the US and even celebrate Christmas), so I missed that. Gold would make a good substitute. Copper could work, too, what with the multi-headed mascot looking vaguely coppery.
