Does anyone know for sure what creature is depicted on this house's coat of arms? Based on the assumption that it's a magical beast like the ones depicted on the other coat of arms, I'm inclined to guess it's a blink dog, but I'll be grateful to anyone who can confirm this as I don't have the ECSB yet (and it might be a while before I do).

Furthermore, do the magical beasts used as emblems by the dragonmarked families hold any particular importance or signficance to them?

Finally, on the off-chance it might reach their eyes or ears, I'd like to thank Anne Stokes in particular for her impressive work on the coat of arms in question, and the artists who contributed to the book in general. Looking through the online art gallery makes me all the more eager to get my hands on the book.

I am inclined to say that the coats of arms pre-dated the appearance of Dragonmarks.

Critter - House

Gorgon - Cannith
Chimera - Deneith
Blinkdog - Ghallanda
Griffon - Jorasco
Manticore - Kundarak
Kraken - Lyrandar
Basilisk - Medani
Unicorn - Orien
Hydra - Phiarlan
Cockatrice - Sivis
Dragonne - Tharask
Diplacerbeast - Thuranni
Hippogriff - Vadalis

The magical beasts don't really match up with the dragonmark abilities, dragons, etc. Either it's just random, or perhaps there's some other more carefully hidden significance....

Now, wouldn't it be interesting if each of the Houses kept a few "mascotts" around each guildhouse to match their coat of arms emblems?

I've also been wondering about the critters depicted on those coat of arms. It seems they don't really have any purpose at all - besides looking cool.
It's the stuff around the borders of the heraldic symbols that actually reveals something about the purpose of the houses.
