Hey, so I'm going to run an Eberron Campaign, and we're forming a party and so far we got:

Human Artificer NG (a Brelander, from a poor neigborhood in Sharn, saved money (and his parents did too) and studied at Morgrave but got thrown in jail for three years because he got blackmailed and tricked)

Aasimar Paladin(of Freedom)/Bard CG (She is from Karrnath. A former cleric of the Silver Flame, an elf who left that religion at the time of the Purge, thaught her the way of freedom, but later got killed by zealots of the Silver Flame, in front of her eyes while they were on a journey)

Elf Duskblade (a true Valenar elf that learned the centuries old way of the Duskblade)

And now we have a forth member, but he doesn't quite know what to play. He would like to be a 'marked member of House Lyandar, but he doesn't quite know what class to pick. Now he asked me what I would like him to play, but I don't want to put him in a box or a straightjacket, I want him to have as much fun with his character as the rest.
The artificer and perhaps the paladin are doing the healing, or at least will try to. We have the Duskblade and the Paladin as the frontline fighters. The Artificer can fill all sorts of notches and crannys with his abilities I believe. The only thing I can come up with is that we may miss a skillful character, something rogue like.
The party could maybe use a rogue or even a cleric, but I would like to come up with an idea that sounds fun to play and feels Eberron-like. This is our first time around Eberron (and my first time DM'ing my own campaign, after doing a few sidequests in other ones) ans I want it to be a real fun, memorable campaign. I've already stocked myself up on tips how to DM in Eberron, about the flavor, about the kinds of adventures, about the NPC's and such.

So what I'm asking is a fun character concept for a House Lyrander half-elf. That really can capture the feeling of such an Eberron character.

So, this is one of the the thousands of help cries, but maybe you could help us out, If you have the time.

Frankly, a Lyrandar half-elf is one of my top choices for character if I ever play in an Eberron game. He may consider a swashbuckler from Complete Warrior--very Aundairian, very piratey. If he has the mark, eventually you might give them access to an airship, and he would take command and control, which could lead to some awesome encounters and whatnot. A duelist type, he'd be good in combat, while he could also have a number of acrobatic and charismatic skills. There's a prestige class in Explorer's Handbook for being a Lyrandar airship pilot, and a prestige class in Dragonmarked that lets him channel his Lyrandar mark abilities into dueling abilities--pushing with wind, charging his blade with electricity, etc. Frankly, pretty endless options there. That would cover your skill requirement--the only rogue-type thing he can't really do is traps, but the artificer can do that.

Other possibilities might be going the rogue route--you could do many of the same types of things, perhaps be a spy of some sort, worked on an airship trained to listen to the conversations of passengers for information for the house or something before taking to adventuring himself.

If you have it, check out Dragonmarked, it has some cool ideas for adventurers from Houses, plus some great info on Lyrandar. Really, the possibilities are endless :)

Thanks for your reply, I myself find the duelist idea very nice (because duelists are cool like that). I'll have the player look into this too.

Another option if you want to go with a duelist type character is the warblade swordsage from the Book of Nine Swords. I realize that not every group likes this supplement but I find it rather enjoyable and a warblade or swordsage could certainly fill the roll of a quick and flashy fighter with a decent skill selection. Both of these classes would mix reasonably well with the Lyrander specific Storm Sentry from dragonmarked. You would lose a few initiator levels, but due to the way multiclassing works with martial adepts it wouldn't hurt you too bad and the abilities gained from the storm sentry would fit you nicely. Also both the warblade and swordsage offer enough skill points that you could work at least some stealth and acrobatics into your character.

Yeah, I was thinking about that book too. We've never worked with it, but it seems interesting and fun.

As I currently have a 'marked member of House Lyrandar, I highly suggest the swashbuckler/storm sentry/windwright captain route. It makes for a highly versatile character that can both help support wise and frontline wise, and also diplomatically with the 12. :w00t:

Just my two cents, in case you were curious to hear from someone who has a Lyrandar.

Go high adventure captain: the scourge of the Skies... for Lyrandar of course:devil: :evillaugh

What I mean is some sort of sky pirate that is secretly using the loot to fund his house even if officially he's a wanted criminal.

Basiacally he never get's caught because house Lyrandar has a deal with Deneith that makes sure he always escapes just before the autorities arrive

I'd go half elf bard4/fighter4/Honorable dread pirate6/Scarlet Corsair6!

basically this build focuses of good skills but mostly REPUTATION with capital letters, all of is abilities from prestige classes and bard are focused around demoralizing oponents and inspire his crew.

Lyrandar is the House of Storm, masters of the open seas and the endless sky, bringers of rain and drought.
I'd use that imagenary on my lyrandar heir, and make him a druid and later just pick levels of dragonmark heir prc for extra mark usage and stuff.

He is the child of storm, bringer of rain, his home is the boundles sky and the open sea, more at home at the helm of an airship or elemental galleon than at the ports of Khorvaire, happy only when being able to feel the wind on his face and smell the rain.

Possibly afraid, or atleast uncomfortable with, closed spaces, definetly not afraid of hights or thunder, someone who can heal the wounded and the sick in his crew, but also bring down the wrath of nature on those who would seek to harm it, or his ship and people, balancing the needs of nature and the needs of his house (not that hard in my opinion, but could be used for some small drama at times).
