House Medani [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-06-07, 01:59 PM Is it just me or is this House seriously too small to be noticed? Every house is mentioned in the few novels I read or the Eberron Source books I have, but House Medani is only mentioned in ECS, and even then only little is told about the house. Sharn: City of Towers mentions only House Deneith for personal body guards, while the Medani HQ is in Wroat, a few miles away.
Why is this house so...unmentioned?

(Or of course, it could just be me. That's a legimite option, since I haven't even read 10% of all of Eberron's source material.)

The first sentence of Medani's description in Dragonmarked is "of the dragonmarked houses, House Medani has the lowest profile - and that's how the house's heirs prefer it." It's a small house and functions well in the shadows. The services of the Warning Guild are typically sold to an elite, wealthy clientele; unlike House Phiarlan, it hasn't established a more mundane side that caters to the masses.

Sharn: City of Towers mentions only House Deneith for personal body guards, while the Medani HQ is in Wroat, a few miles away.
That's because you hire them for different reasons. Medani has never tried to match Deneith when it comes to physical protection. The Blademark and the Defender's Guild provide mercenaries and rent-a-cops, a clearing house for unmarked soldiers. A dragonmarked Deneith heir is there to be at your side, to fight your enemies and shield you from harm. A Medani heir should prevent the threat from occuring in the first place. His job is to learn of the danger and warn you about it, to inform you of the risk... they're the WARNING Guild, not the Defender's Guild. Looking again to Dragonmarked, the common classes for the Warning Guild are Expert, Bard, and Rogue... as compared to Warrior, Fighter, Rogue for the Defender's Guild. You don't see the Medani heir mentioned in the novels because it's their job NOT to be seen - and because the innkeeper won't go to Medani when he needs to hire a bouncer, while he may go to Deneith.

With that said, if you want more about the houses, Dragonmarked is the book you're looking for. The novel Legacy of Wolves also has a Medani character.

10-06-07, 02:53 PM Medani gets LOADS of love in my adventure series about Viktor Saint-Demain, especially "Chimes at Midnight" and the upcoming "Hell's Heart" into both of which Baron Trelib himself features quite predominantly.

10-06-07, 07:11 PM As an aside, I sure do love Medani. They are really sexy. Like a house of subterfuge tacticians.

I've played one character with a desire to join Medani (his driving goal), and two character ideas of Medani agents. They're my favorite House thusfar. :)

10-07-07, 05:41 PM I've always looked at Medani as being a bit like the Mentats in Dune, especially Thufir Hawat, Mentat master of assassins. They assess situations, and suggest course of actions that make the presence of armed security much less necessary.

To this day, I prefer the Fireballed Mage's concepts of House Medani to those presented in the Dragonmarked book. FBM totally nailed what makes the house both cool and "house-worthy"!

10-11-07, 10:51 AM Medani and Lyrandar really bridge the human-elf gap nicely.

Lyrandar are very much full of human ambition, looking to expand their power.
Medani would, in good elven fashion, prefer to completely dominate a speciality forever.
